Practice #6 Preseason 4pm-5:45pm

Practice objective: Be able to mentally envision where one must be in all rotations of 2-3
defense.

Equipment: 15 basketballs, 15 reversible practice jerseys

4:00-4:05pm 5 minutes 3 man weave:

Players will form 3 separate lines and pass each other the ball without dribbling and will
go behind the teammate they passed to in a weave like set up. They will do this all the
way to the other end of the court where they will make the layup and come back the
other direction then go to the end of the line.

Cues: Lead your teammates, snap your thumbs down

4:05-4:15pm 10 minutes Stretching:

Athletes will spread out along the baseline and do dynamic stretches such as high
knees, butt kickers, grass pickers, high kicks, shuffles, hip opening stretches, etc. down
and back from the baseline to the volleyball line. The athletes will also get to decide
many stretches that the team will do if they have any ideas.
4:15-4:25 10 minutes Pick and roll drill:

This will be a 2v2 drill where the athletes will work on pick and roll, pick and pop,
slipping the screen with their teammate while reading the defense. This drill is meant for
the athletes to work on their decision making for game situations, also this allows the
athletes to dictate what shots they take because it is all on them to take and create as
many shots as possible. After 5 minutes the offense and defense switch.

Cues: Defensively, hedge hard and high. Offensively, rub shoulders with the screener

4:25-4:30 5 minutes Mirror drill

Players will pair up with one teammate and will line up in between two cones with one
player being on offense and one player being on defense, the offensive player can
choose to go either left or right inside the cone and the defender must mirror these
movements from the offensive player. After two and a half minutes the offensive and
defensive players will switch roles.

Cues: Watch the bellybutton, stay low, arms out

4:30-4:40 10 minutes Defensive Slides

Players will start lines on opposite ends of the court in the right corners and will get into
a defensive stance, they will shuffle slow to begin to the free throw line, then they will
pivot at a 45 degree angle and go to the sideline, then they will pivot again and go to
half court, they players will continue to do this until they make it to the other end of the
court. After players have gone through a couple times they will start to speed up until
they get to full speed.

Cues: Keep your butt down, don’t cross your feet

4:40-4:50 10 minutes Shell drill

Players will get set up with 4 offensive players outside the 3 point line and there will be
4 defensive players inside the 3 point line defending the 4 offensive players. On the
pass the defense will jump to the ball. The defensive players will also keep both the
ball and their man in their sights. The goal of the drill is to make sure that the defense is
talking and jumping to the right positions when the ball is in the air.

Cues: Ball, me, man, Jump to the pass

4:50-5:00 10 minutes Implement 2-3 defense

Explain to the players what we are looking for in an aggressive 2-3 defense and what
the rotations they will need to make are. Also explain where the weaknesses are in the
zone such as right in the middle and what we need to do in order to defend this.

Cues: Communicate

5:00-5:10 10 minutes 3 on 3 Rebounding

In this drill the players will get in groups with 3 on defense and 3 on offense and will
make basketball moves until the coach shoots the ball. After the ball is shot the defense
will need to box out the offense and get the defensive rebound. For the offense they
want to do everything that they can in order to get the offensive rebound and make the
put back.

Cues: Put a body on someone

5:10-5:20 10 minutes Fast Break offense 3 on 2

Players will be acting as if they are on a fast break in a 3 on 2 situation where they are
allowed 3 passes in order to score and if they can’t score with 3 passes then their time
on offense is done because in an actual game the defense should be back by that time.
The two who don’t shoot the ball will stay on defense.

Cues: make the defenders make a decision

5:20-5:30 10 minutes Scrimmage

Players will play a 10 minute game where they only play a 2-3 defense and the offense
will try to score every time and the team who scores the most will win the game.

5:30-5:45 Cooldown

Players will circle up around the center circle and do static stretching with group
counting. During this time we will go over practice and see what the athletes enjoyed
and what they feel we can do to make practice more productive and enjoyable.
