UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson allows students to learn about the phases of the moon. The moon phases include New Moon,
Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning
Crescent. Through a WebQuest, matching handout, and Kahoot, students will demonstrate their Science skills.
This lesson pertains to SPI 0407.6.1.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Given access to a WebQuest, students will effectively complete it with 90% accuracy.
● Given a moon phase handout, students will check for understanding by identifying the correct moon
phases with 90% accuracy.
● The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of the moon phases. Students
will identify the phases in the correct order.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
● SPI 0407.6.1 Organize the phases of the moon in the correct sequence.
● ISTE 1c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice to
demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

MATERIALS:
● WebQuest http://zunal.com/webquest.php?w=376885
● Kahoo
● Computer/iPad
● Microsoft Word
● Students will have access to computers and/or iPads in order to complete the WebQuest.
● Students will have access to computers and/or iPads in order to play Kahoot.
● Teacher will use Microsoft Word to create a matching handout for students to complete.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

● Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of each moon phase and the correct sequence of each
phase.
● This lesson connects with the previous lesson in that the students learned about the planets in the solar
system.
● This lesson will build on the next lesson since students will be learning about how placement of the
moon determines between day and night as well as the time.
● It is important to plan differentiated activities because each student learns differently.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
● Introduction: Begin by telling students they are on a mission to discover the different moon phases. It
will get them excited and it correlates to the WebQuest.
● Procedures: Provide a sequential (step by step) description of the procedures and activities for the
lesson.
● Teacher Procedures:
1. Introduce lesson in an exciting way. Explain the WebQuest and what the students will be
completing. (10 minutes)
2. Help students as they complete the WebQuest. (30 minutes)
3. Explain to students that they will be making a graphic organizer of the moon phases instead
of cookies. They will be using Microsoft Word and finding images of the moon. (10 minutes)
4. Ask questions pertaining to the lesson. (5 minutes)
5. (Day 2) Give students handout to complete.
6. After reviewing moon phases, ask students to log in to Kahoot on their iPads.
7. Lead the game of Kahoot on projector. (30 minutes)
8. Ask students to discuss the lesson with their groups and ask any questions they may have.
(15 minutes)

● Student Procedures:
1. Listen to the teacher explain the lesson. Ask questions if needed. (10 minutes)
2. Complete the WebQuest. (45 minutes)
3. Make a graphic organizer with Microsoft Word of the moon phases.
4. (Day 2) Complete handout of the moon phases to remember what was learned yesterday. (15
minutes)
5. Log in to Kahoot on iPad.
6. Play Kahoot. (30 minutes)
7. Discuss the moon phases with group and ask any questions. (15 minutes)

● Closure: At the end of the class, the teacher closes with final thoughts of about each moon phase. The
teacher will also answer any questions the students still need to ask. The students will turn in their
worksheets and submit their graphic organizers.
