Philosophy of Education

As new teachers to be we are learning and developing ways to ensure that students are

receiving the education they need. I believe that their education is the most important because

they are the future of tomorrow. I believe that each student learns and develops skills differently

and is our duty as teachers to help them in any way possible. As time have past new ideas and

skills have been developed to help us make sure that every single student will receive the

education they need so that they can be ready for adulthood.

I personally believe that the purpose of education is to prepare students for the future.

According to Oakes and Lipton “It decreed that every school must ensure that all students learn

to use their minds well, so they be prepared for responsible citizenship, further learning, and

productive employment in our nation’s modern economy” (Oakes & Lipton, 2003, pg. 8). In my

opinion we educate children to prepare them for adulthood by providing them with skills that

they will need in the workforce or in college. For instance, some skills may be for students to be

able to use critical thinking, writing, math, as well as for them to be independed. As a future

teacher what I hope to see my students as they become adults is for them to be good citizens,

independed, and for them to have achieve all their goals.

According to Wilson and Peterson, “The social occasion of conversation, discussion,

joint work, and debate also play a critical role in learning (Wilson & Peterson, 2006, pg. 4). In

my opinion I agree because I believe that children learn better when they are interacting with

others in small groups facing each other because they get more enthusiastic, participate more,

and share ideas. A learning environment that promotes access learning includes a teacher who is

passionate and enthusiastic about what they do as well as students being able to work with one

another in activities and projects that will get them involve in that particular lecture.
. I believe that children learn best when there are activities involves instead of just writing all day

long. For instance, I remember in fourth grade we were learning about the gold rush and they

took us on a field trip to I believe was San Gabriel mission. I had the opportunity to pretend to

look for gold just how all the people back then did, it was a fun and great experience.

Wilson and Peterson stated that “Learners come with different experiences, capacities,

understandings, and backgrounds” (Wilson & Peterson, 2006, pg. 4) Teachers must understand

that every child learns differently and they must learn how to work with each of them. They must

make sure that they are available for their students and encourage them to ask for help when

needed. One thing that I believe teachers can do to accommodate all students need is to take a

few minutes of the class time to help each of there students with anything they may need

specially students with special need. For instance, the teacher can put their students in a group

activity and while the students are working teachers can take that time to work with students with

special need. In addition, teachers can make themselves available afterschool to help students

that need it and if that is not possible they can encourage their students to go to an afterschool

tutoring program for extra help. It is the teacher responsibility to help each and everyone of there

students as needed.

As a future teacher I believe that the way a teacher teaches has a lot to do in how children

grasp the information being thought. For instance, if a teacher is excited and enthusiastic and

happy and makes their students participate then their students will have a better understanding

and learning experience than with a teacher who just teaches and does not seen to care if their

students are even understanding the material. I believe that all subjects are important and will

benefit children sooner or later. Wilson and Peterson state that “Contemporary education reform

demands that students have more flexible understanding of mathematics and language arts,
biology, and physics and geography, and history Wilson & Peterson, 2006, pg. 7). Subjects such

as the ones being mention have a purpose and will provide students with skills that they will

need in the future. Many subjects like visual performing arts can be integrated with other

subjects. For instance, visual performing arts can be integrated with history since history at times

involves students drawing maps. I believe it is just a matter of organizing and planning ahead.

Linda Darling and John Bransford state “It is important for teachers to understand their

roles and responsibility as professionals in schools that must prepare all students for equitable

participation in democratic society (Darling. & Bransford, 2005, pg. 11). As a future teacher I

believe that an effective teacher is someone who is encouraging, motivated, passionate, caring,

and much more. Teachers should be patient and make time to help and listen to what their

students have to say. Teachers should commit and guide their students in the process of there

education and promote the skills necessary that will benefit them in the future
