“Does Music Really Make a Difference?”

This case study written by Peter C Terry and M Curran, Costas looks into the psychological effect of
music on the human brain and how music effects physical activity. Results confirmed that effective use
of music produced significant psychological responses in physical PERFROMANCE AND CAUSED PLAYERS
TO EXERT THEMSELVES FURTHER. I chose this article because I found it interesting that music could not
only help people mentally, but also physically. When I reflect I do realize that music has helped me get
through really tough physical tasks without a problem, whereas if I had not had music I probably would
not have performed as well.

“Effects of Music Therapy and Music based interventions in the treatment of substance use disorders. A
systematic Review”

This article was based on research in music therapy and how it impacted addicts and substance abusers.
6 studies were conducted and there was a signifigant increase in motivation and emotional responses
from the patients who were exposed to music therapy compared to those who weren’t. I chose this
article because If I were to major in music I would want to use music to improve peoples lives.

“Effects of Short-Term music and second-language training on executive control”

Monika Janus, Yunjo Lee, Sylvain Moreno, Ellen Bialystok

This article showcased how music classes helped children advance in their performance in foregin
language classes. The study assigned fifty seven fout to six yearold children to music classes ranging
from chorale to instrument based. These children were in foreign language classes prior to being in
music class and language improvement was monitored before taking the music class and after. Student
performed way better after the music class and excelled in class. This study also allowed children to
perform songs in French which improved their accents and cognitive performance. I chose this article
because it accurately displays how music can improve the cognitive abilities in students.

“Kod?ly Today: A cognitive Approach to Elementary Music Education”

This article further proves the point above that children were able to approach curriculum goals while
taking music based classes, compared to before taking music classes.

“Self-Determination Theory: An approach to motivation in music education”


This article provides an overview of the self-Determination approach to motivation in music education.
It displays how motivation is a need in music education.
