WHY MULTIPANELS?
Forge welded grating is manufactured in form of mats Mats are that heavy that they are impossible to be
having different lengths. These mats are very large, handled by one person. Cut-to-length is carried out by
heavy and difficult to handle. means of angle grinder or gas jet.
Cut faces are rough, sharp and raw. If a binding bar A considerable portion of the mat has to be scrapped,
is welded against, the rust protection is inferior to that an uneconomical method.

Calculation of Load
If grating type, span width and uniformly distributed load
are known, the deflection allowed for can be calculated P
(1/200 of the span width) from the following formula: 1000
Qmax
Qpermitted = x fpermitted
f
Qpermitted = uniformly distributed load permitted L
Qmax = maximum load permitted according to table P = linear load allowed for
f2 = deflection at Ppermitted. (mm).
f = deflection at Qmax. (according to table)
fpermitted = 1/200 of span

WELAND 'LARGE' MESH GRATING
Weland large mesh grating can
be put to a number of uses. For
example security grating, gates,
break in protection, fencing,
ceilings, partitioning and display
board stands.
Grating is available in 2 different
mesh opening sizes and 3 load
bearing bar depths. The material
also can be made to measure.
The grating is hot dip galvanized
as standard but can also be
delivered powder coated.

Grating dimensions
The table below shows the constructional dimensions
offered by the grating (full mesh). The marked dimensions
indicate standard widths.
Example: When ordering a channel covering 600 x 16845 c/c
mm from grating type H the division is as follows: 16 panels Thickness of load bar
600 x 1000 and 1 panel 600 x 834 (value 834 is next to
value 845 in the table). Grating dimension
CHOICE OF
GRATING
LENGTH AND
LAYOUT
When establishing layout drawings the panel
size should be based on the standard width
of the grating (1000 mm) to achieve best
possible economy.
If the grating is to be laid across a number of
support beams, choose a length of grating that
spans across as many supports as possible.
This results in less deflection under load, you
get a pleasant overall pattern and a minor
number of joints.
If you on the same occasion order gratings
with the same length of load bearing bars, you
can make the cross bar match.
TAGGING
Every panel is provided with a marked tag
with reference to the layout drawing, which
makes site fixing easier.

43
Non-slip
Slit grating is manufactured with serrated slits and
offers thus excellent protection against skidding in all
directions.
Pervious
Slit grating lets through light, dirt and liquids. This
entails that cleaning is rarely required.
Low Weight
Slit grating is manufactured in lengths up to 4 m and
in widths of between 130 and 500 mm. A plank of slit
grating has low weight and is easily carried.
Safe
Slit grating has a mesh opening of 45 x 14 mm. It
hereby meets the requirement within the offshore
industry of a maximum opening size of 15 mm.
44
High Load Carrying
Capacity
Slit grating is manufactured with height 40 respectively
70 mm. For use as grating for vehicular traffic the width
is 130 respectively 190 mm. Further information is
given in the load table.
Customer Adapted
Slit grating can be worked, cut to size and shaped on
customer’s requirement. All working in the factory is
carried out before hot dip galvanizing is applied.
Surface Treatment
Hot dip galvanizing meets the requirements according
to EN 1461. Slit grating can alos be supplied untreated
or painted.
Aluminium
Aluminium grating is manufactured in quality SIS
144120 (57S).

supporting structure, railings and staircases.
Load regulations
The Swedish building standard (SBN 80) prescribes load values for different types of rooms. The table below
shows some examples from table 22:311.
In rooms for industrial activities the load value has to be judged with regard to the type of activity. The total
exceptional load must, however, always be minimum 5 kN/m2.
Floors must also be adapted to stand up against concentrated loads — 1 kN, 1,5 kN or 4 kN depending upon
the type of room.
For dimensioning see separate planning instruction.

WHY CHOOSE A SPIRAL STAIRCASE?
A spiral staircase is, in the vast majority of cases a very practical solution of a staircase problem. Below we show
a comparison between a spiral staircase and a straight staircase so as to highlight the advantages and disad-
vantages of the two types.
H=3000
1000
4570 Ø 1800 50
Space saving
Consider a staircase with a height of 3 meters which goes from an exit door down to ground level.
Straight staircase, width 900 mm. At the up-permost level a standard landing of 1000 mm is required. A staircase
allowing a correct posture for climbing of 40°, needs an overhan of 3.57 m + the landing of 1 m = 4.57 meters.
A Spiral staircase with a radius of 900 mm. At the uppermost level a landing sized 950 x 950 mm. The spiral
staircase is position ed with a center 950 mm from the wall and as such requires a well space of Ø. 1900 mm.
Architecturally pleasing
Straight staircases are in many cases, regarded as heavy,
clumsy and dominating in the erected position. Spiral stair-
cases are considerably more slender and are not domina-
ting in the same way. In many cases they melt in with sur-
rounding environment as a part of the facade.
Escape/Rescue
Since spiral staircases are comfortable to descend an
evacuation can be carried out quickly. Even rescue on a
stretcher can be conducted comfortable.
56
Secure Easy to assemble

person a chance to grap a railing or the center post. Clear assembly instruc-
tions are included
with every delivery.
Flexible
As a rule the space for a staircase is limited and step
on/step off points are stated. This means that straight
staircases can be very steep or alternate in several
flights which in turn means that they can be complex
and expansive.
Spiral staircases need the same small base area irres-
pective of how high they are. They can be manufactured
either left or right turning and have different number of
steps per revolution. This means that in the main an
efficient staircase can be achieved.
Lighter design
A straight staircase of
several flights needs a com-
prehensive construction to be
able to support the landings.
A spiral staircase on the other
hand normally demands no ex-
tra load carrying framing, as
long as the landings are not
excessively large.
Can be
constructed to great height
Straight staircases can be very complicated. Spiral
staircases can be built very high, without any extra
supports, assuming that bracing can be carried out
against the wall. Bracing can be achieved either by step-
ping off landings or special support angles constructed
every revolution. If there is no adjacent wall, bracing can
be carried out with longitudinal support legs positioned
outside the staircase diameter.

71
Weland standard straight flight staircases are manufac-
tured of steel and are mainly used in industrial buildings
and as escape staircases in different types of buildings.
The staircases consist of stringers, treads and landings
of grating as well as balustrades. The steel components
are, as a rule, hot dip galvanized and supplied in
separate parts for assembly on site.
Our manufacture also comprises straight flight stair-
cases for other applications such as installations in
office buildings, flats, entrances, public rooms, schools
etc. In these cases the treads normally consist of other
material than grating. Also the design of the balustrade
and the surface treatment can differ.
72
73
CUSTOM DESIGN
The simplest method for design is to leave the planning
to us. Our technical department can look back at many
years of experience with the planning and dimensioning
of straight flight staircases. Just send us your drawing,
we do the rest.
We dimension and draw the staircase, and all you need
to do is check the measurements and approve the
drawing before manufacture starts.
ANGLE OF
INCLINATION / RISE
For comfortable passage of staircases there should be a
certain ratio between the angle of inclination, the rise and
the going. The suitable angle of inclination lies between
30° and 45°, in practice, however, it is often necessary
to compromise due to the limited space for the base line.
The table below shows the suitable rise and going when
the angle of inclination is known.

case Building Standards BBR94 and BKR94 apply. Base
line, width, load etc. have to be considered. In order to
t facilitate the dimensioning we have worked out a diagram
showing a graph intended to give a lead for choosing
the suitable type of stringer. The graph is calculated for
a staircase with an effective inclination of 35 degrees.

STANDARD STAIRTREADS
Type TH6 is manufactured from press-welded grating with mesh size
30 x 67 mm. Type TH6-S is manufactured from the same
grating, but is provided with a safety front edge marking the
front of the tread and giving increased non-slip properties.
Standard stairtreads are hot dip galvanized and kept in
stock. Stairtreads up to 900 mm length have end plates 60
mm high, from length 1000 mm end plates 70 mm high.
Thisapplies to all types of tread.Special type treads can be TH6
manufactured from grating chosen from Weland grating
programme (see separate brochure).

WELAND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE
INSTALLATION OF LADDERS
Access to Roof Area
Façade Height between 4 and 8 metres
Provide a fixed cat ladder on the outside wall or on the
inside of the building.
Escape Routes
Weland cat ladders are approved according to SS 831340 (functional
standard). Fixed cat ladders are required with façade heights exceeding
4 metres. The ladder should end on suitable distance above the ground
dependent on the possibility of access required. Escape ladders must end
not more than 1.5 m above ground.
Weland cat ladders are well apt for mounting on towers, silos, bridge piers,
chimneys etc. In case of very high ladders rest platforms should be provided.
In case a protecting cage is mounted this should end on a maximum dis-
tance of 2.5 metres above ground. We recommend that ladders with
height exceeding 6 metres should be provided with a protecting cage.
Escape ladders should always be provided with a protecting cage, if they
include escape platforms. This measure has to be taken to prevent step-
ping out into open air.

CHIMNEY CLAMPS
When fixing equipment onto a chimney always use chimney clamps, as the bricks in a chimney age faster than other
brickwork. Therefore, french screws, expansion bolts or similar fixings are not apt to be used in chimneys.Flexible
chimney clamps with only two module sizes. These modules together with different lengths of threaded rods cover
all chimney dimensions from 430 x 430 mm to 2000 x 2000 mm. When ordering just state the chimney dimensions.

SURFACE TREATMENT
What is hot dip galvanizing?
Products of steel to be protected against rust are dipped
in a zinc bath with a temperature of approx. 455° C.
97 % Zinc
When the steel comes into contact with the liquid zinc a
reaction occurs between the two metals. Iron and zinc
form an alloy and thus a perfect adherence is achieved.
The thickness of the zinc layer is dependent on the Iron-/zinc
composition of the steel. alloy

LASER AND WATER JET CUTTING
Our drawing office uses modern CAD-equipment. We
can offer support with your design work, or work with
your drawings or diskettes.
Many CNC production machines are programmed at
their work stations whereas all laser cutting machines
are programmed directly from the drawing office.
Quality Control
Every step in the production process is subject to strict
control. We work according to quality system ISO 9001.
Minimizing of Scrap
When designing parts and programming machines we
calculate the ratio of utilization of the basic material,
scrap is minimized.
Rational Handling
We have always stressed the importance of material
handling. With the best possible equipment, generously
designed premises and carefully established material
flow, as well as the support of skilled staff we guarantee
rational handling and short time deliveries. Rational and
careful handling of material includes stock of all basic
material in weather-protected rooms for cleaner and
more efficient work.

Prototype Manufacture
Laser Cutting is a supreme method for the manufacture
of prototypes and products in small and medium size
batches. Due to the fact that no special tools have to
be manufactured, a very economical and fast method
of manufacture is achieved.
Realize your ideas with us. We have large capacity and
are at your service.
Cut Faces
Laser Cutting gives precise right angle cuts. The cut
faces are very smooth and finish grinding is normally not
required. (tolerance ± 0,1 mm),
Material
Our laser cutters are designed for cutting carbon steel
up to 15 mm, stainless steel up to 10 mm and aluminium
up to 3 mm thick. Even other types of material can be
cut, but a test is recommended
CAM Cutting
Our CAD equipment is connected on-line to the laser
cutters. This results in fast deliveries and close tole-
rances. We would be pleased to assist you with a CAD-
drawing.
If you work with auto-CAD, you can send your drawing
filed on diskette, saved in DXF file. This saves pro-
gramming cost.
Tube Cut-Outs
Tube cutting facilitates notching of
practically any shape. The tube is
rotated during the cutting process
with the result that the cut-outs always
have the same angle, in relation to the
tube centre. Maximum tube diametre
130 mm, box section 300 mm.

• HOT DIP GALVANIZING
Wet Method
in Gothenburg
Zinken Weland in Gothenburg applies the wet process which means that the goods is brought directly from the
pickling bath to the zinc bath. The fluxing agent forms a cover on the zinc bath and thus acts on the goods when
this is being submerged. The galvanizing shop has large lifting height, and thus abundant zinc can run off, when
the goods is lifted from the bath. Zinken Weland AB can galvanize goods up to 10 metres length.
Large lifting height facilitates good runoff from Distinct tagging facilitates identification after
