EGP 335: Unit Plan Lesson Plan Day 10

Living in Space

Lesson Preparation
I. Learning Objectives
a. Students will be able to understand and explain the similarities and
differences between life on earth and life in space.
b. Students will be able to determine whether a statement is true or false
relating to the videos and article.

II. Standards
a. PA Standard:
i. CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.L.2.5.A Identify real-life connections
between words and their use (e.g., describe foods that are spicy or
juicy.)
b. NCSS Standard:
i. I Culture – programs should include experiences that provide for
the study of culture and cultural diversity, so that the learner can:
A. Explore and describe similarities and differences in the ways
groups, societies, and cultures address similar human needs and
concerns.
c. 21st Century Skills:
i. Communicate Clearly. Listen effectively to decipher meaning,
including knowledge, values, attitudes, and intentions.

III. Academic Language

a. International Space Station- is a space station, or a habitable
artificial satellite, in low Earth orbit
b. Living in Space, know the difference between living in space and
living on earth
c. Astronauts- a person who leaves earth and goes into space,
typically for purposes of exploration.
d. True or false, determine whether a statement is correct (true) or
incorrect (false)
e. NASA- National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Morgan 2

IV. Technology, Materials, Resources

a. Photos of the International Space Station from NASA website.
b. Article on A Day in Space by ESA Kids.
c. Two videos from YouTube (Eating on the Space Station
https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLiuUQ9asub3TmweK0ARjo4jLfvnV
A4uP8&v=_4aWoZPEd2w&feature=player_embedded and Sleeping
https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLiuUQ9asub3ThXxePuhXdbIoLF-
e1WQ_x&v=Q1vHmuUXOYw&feature=player_embedded by the NASA
YouTube channel.)
d. SMARTBoard
e. Computer with internet access
f. Living in Space Worksheet (see page 5 and 6)

Instructional Delivery
V. Anticipatory Set
a. I will start the lesson off by informing the students that we will be talking
about living in space today. Then I will ask the students to turn and talk
with someone around them and talk about what they think it would be like
to live in space.
b. Students will talk shortly. (around 2-3 minutes)
c. Then a few students will share what their partner said about what they
think it would be like to live in space. This way students can work on
listening skills and may be more likely to share aloud since it is someone
else’s thought.
d. Do you think you could live in space?

VI. Instructional Activities

a. Show photos (4) of the International Space Station and see if the students
know what this is.
b. Have a few students (2 or 3) share and talk about what they think it is.
c. Tell students that this is the International Space Station. It is a large
spacecraft in orbit around Earth. It’s where astronauts live and how NASA
learns more about living and working in space.
d. Talk about what the students think it would be like to live in space.
e. See if there are any questions.
f. Next, hand out the “A day in space” article. (link:
https://www.esa.int/esaKIDSen/SEMQ1JWJD1E_LifeinSpace_0.html)
Have it up on the SMARTBoard as well.
g. Teacher will start and read the first paragraph in the article and then will
ask for a volunteer to read the next paragraph. This will continue for the
remaining three paragraphs.
h. Discuss the article, what did you not know before reading? What did you
find interesting? Have students share their thoughts.
i. Answer any questions students may have.
Morgan 3

j. Do we understand living in space a bit more? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs

down for no. (Checking for comprehension)
k. Have the students come up to the carpet while you get first video ready.
l. Watch video about Eating on the space station via YouTube. (link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLiuUQ9asub3TmweK0ARjo4jLfvnV
A4uP8&v=_4aWoZPEd2w&feature=player_embedded) Video is 8 minutes
long.
m. As students are watching the video, walk around to make sure they are
paying attention.
n. Discuss what you saw in the video. Have students comment and share.
(Example: How cool it was to see that the astronauts could let go of their
food in front of them and it would just float there!)
o. Before the final video ask students how do you think Astronauts sleep in
the International Space Station?
p. Have a few students share what they think.
q. Let’s see what the video shows us about how they sleep.
r. Play the second video about Sleeping in space via YouTube (link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLiuUQ9asub3ThXxePuhXdbIoLF-
e1WQ_x&v=Q1vHmuUXOYw&feature=player_embedded) Video is a little
over 4 minutes long.
s. Discuss the video and hear what the students think.
t. Have the children go back to their seats.
u. Any questions so far?
v. Handout the worksheet and give directions. (Read the statement and
based on what we’ve read and watched decide whether it is true or false)
w. Students may work with a partner and can sit around the room.
x. Give them around 10 (ish) minutes and see where they are around then.
y. Circulate the room while students are working to ensure they are on task.
z. After 10 (ish) minutes come back together and review the answers to the
worksheet.
aa. Have the students share their answers.
bb. If any student wants to share their spaceship drawing, they can do so after
the worksheet has been completely reviewed.

VII. Closure
a. I want to get some sort of feedback at the end of the lesson so I know that
the students learned something. Students will be asked to find a partner
across the room and go tell them something new they learned today and
what they enjoyed about the lesson.
b. Once everyone has talked with a partner, a few volunteers will share what
their partner said. (At least 3 students share)
c. Do you (still) think you could live in space? (Tie it back to question at the
beginning)
Morgan 4

Meeting All Learners

VIII. Differentiation
a. The questions on the worksheet were created so that all students would
be able to answer them.
b. Students will also be working in pairs on the worksheet.
c. Visual learners will benefit from the videos.

IX. Accommodations
a. For those students with an IEP and/or 504 plan need, they will be given an
iPad with headphones so they can pay close attention to the videos.
b. Videos will be played at the same time and students will still participate in
the group discussions about the videos.

X. Modifications
a. For those students with an IEP and/or 504 plan need, they will be
expected to just know the similarities between living on earth and living in
space.

Meeting Objectives
XI. Assessments
a. The turn and talks and listening to student responses will serve as
formative assessment for students’ comprehension. The teacher will be
able to see which students understood what was being asked of them and
which students need more support by listening to the answers that they
share with the class and as they talk with peers. (Objective A)
b. Thumbs up and thumbs down is another way to check for understanding.
c. Worksheet (Objective B)
