Storm water design and analysis

1. Software
The following software will be used for design and analysis of storm water
i. AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018
ii. Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis 2018
iii. AutoCAD 2018
2. Modeling Workflow
a. Modeling Existing Ground
One of the main reason civil 3d is selected is that it is capable of creating dynamic objects from
TIN surface to node network including catchment area delineation. In designing and analyzing civil
infrastructure projects creating a TIN surface that will represent the existing ground condition
using the surveyed data. The surface will be generated using the civil 3d surface tool
b. Parcels
Catchment area delineation involves the subdivision of large pieces of land into smaller
lots to represent the land use and cover. In order to represent the land cover of the
terminal after the construction is finished parcels will be created according to the
architectural drawing. The parcels will then be graded as per the provided finished level
and desired slope. Hydrological parameter will be set for each parcel
c. Alignment and profile.
The horizontal and vertical profile will be regenerated as per the data provided from
highway engineer. The corridor model will be generated accordingly.
d. Channels and Culverts.
Based on the previously model data the channels alignment and profile will be proposed.
Whenever there is a crossing culverts will be inserted and linked with channel nodes.
Based on the vertical profile channel and culvert inlets location will be identified
e. Surface after construction.
A new surface will be generated using civil 3d combined surface. Designed elements will
either be added or deducted from the existing ground. The generated new surface will
represent the site condition after the construction. This will increase catchment
delineation and hydrology calculation.
3. Analysis Workflow
The finished models will be exported to Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis and checked for
integrity.
a. Defining Network Elements.
Network node elements including manhole structures, junction boxes, storm drain inlets,
catch basins and sewerage discharge location will be set as per the imported data. After
that network link elements including culverts, open channels ditches, sewer pipes and
side of roadway gutters will be defined.
b. Sub basins
Parcels and catchment areas will be converted to subbasin whose topography and
drainage system elements direct surface runoff to a single discharge point.
c. Project and analysis option.
Hydrology runoff specification including hydrology method and time concentration
method will be set in the project option. Moreover, hydraulic routing method and force
main equation will also be defined in the same option.
For the analysis option storm duration and storm selection will be defined.
d. Output variables.
Nodes – Flooding flow rate, lateral inflow, total inflow, volume, water depth and water
surface elevation.
Links – Average depth, capacity ratio, flow rate, flow velocity, maximum depth
System – Noda storage volume, outfall outflows, rainfall rate and runoff flow
