CI2300

Final Project.

This semester I took the class CI 2300, the focus of this class based on the Appalachian

website was, “The goal of this foundational core course is to provide preparation for future

teachers, representing all content areas and grade levels, with a broad understanding of

professional issues related to literacy, technology, and instruction.” I feel like this class did

exactly what the aim was. We learned through multiple projects and writing reading and viewing

reports.

The website that I created as my final project I feel is a very good representation of what

we did this semester and I think that it showcases all the information in a fun, but simple way. I

tried to pick pictures for my website that show cased technology, and pictures that show cased

what we learned during that project. I think that each of these three projects helped me to focus

on a different stregth and I hope that this website shows this.

Video Hook.

In the first project, the video hook I worked with a group and I am really proud of our

final project. Not only am I proud of the acting but I also am glad that we got to work with

editing in this video because that was really fun for me. In this project we used a video to

connect with the students, this video contains humor that I think would make the students really

interested in learning. With the lesson plan that we have for this the teacher is supposed to stop

the video at certain times and ask questions, these questions will help to keep the students
engaged in their learning and will help to make sure that they are paying attention. One specific

example in this project that I really enjoyed was when we talked about the order of the planets,

not only were the drawn behind the people to back up our information but the order was repeated

multiple times so that the students had a better chance of taking in that information.

1a) How can the activities in this project connect students to one another? (social aspect of this

project)

I believe that students can connect to each other through laughter in this project, this video is

goofy and this kind of humor is not offensive to anyone so it will bring people together. If I were

going to make students do a project like this it would also bring them together because this

project was hard and you have to work very closely with each other to get it finished.

1b.)How can the activities in the project connect them to their own skills and interests?

If I were to make my students do a project like this, it would help them connect them to their

own skills and interest because they would get to choose something that they enjoy to do and

something that they find fun.

1c) How can you meet the needs of a variety of students with these activities?

By using humor, visuals, and repretativeness you are reaching students that learn in all these

different ways even though they are watching the same video.

1d)How can you use the media worlds of the students into creative and critical ways?

By using Youtube in this project we are connecting the students to a world that they are familiar

with, by posting it we are also giving them the ability to go back and watch their teacher on

youtube which I think that the students will find funny to show their parents.

1e)How can you get the students engaged enough to “think about” and/or “imagine” and/or “to

wonder” about the topics addressed?

Because I know that no one in my class will have any personal experience with space all their is

to do is wonder, they will think about the order of the planets and how this affects them and I

think that it would also be intresting to hear what wacky things they have heard about space.

1f)How might the lessons in this project help students succeed in the 21st century?

This projects will help students to see the importance of knowing the planets, even though this is

a simple thing that most people do not know.

Media Literacy.

In our second project, media literacy I felt that I learned a lot. I had to do lots of googling

and researching in order to find the information for some of these answers. We also used humor

by using this video and I was glad that we picked this video because it deals with a particularly

touchy subject. I thought that our higher order thinking questions were the most useful for this

video because I think that everyone in the class would have very different answers to questions

like, “how do we fix the immigration problem in the United States?”

2a)How can the activities in this project connect students to one another? (social aspect of this

project)

I think that this video will help to start the conversation of this touchy subject with the kids, They

will connect to each other by sharing their thoughts.

2b.)How can the activities in the project connect them to their own skills and interests?

This project will connect them to their own skills and interest because it will highlight what

things they believe themselves. The will get to think about their own skills and how that will help

the imigration reform ect.

2c) How can you meet the needs of a variety of students with these activities?
This will also connect with students through humor and writing and will help them to think

critically. The questions for this also range from knowing a little bit about the interworkings of

imagration to knowing a lot so students that have different levels of past knowledge will all feel

included.

2d)How can you use the media worlds of the students into creative and critical ways?

In this project I think that it is important for the students to do their own factchecking, I think

that they could use their phones during this fact checking and I can only imagine that most of

them will have different ideas of what an acurate fact checking website is so this will also spark a

conversation.

2e)How can you get the students engaged enough to “think about” and/or “imagine” and/or “to

wonder” about the topics addressed?

This project is critically important in learning about something that happened not to long ago, it

will students realize the important of this even if it never affects them. I think that having them

think about how this would change their life if they were someone who would probably be

affected by this and how they would be affected by this. Also some kids will probably have some

experience with this so it will be intresting to hear how it affected them and could they imagine a

life that these were not the rules.

2f)How might the lessons in this project help students succeed in the 21st century?

Depending on the age group you are teaching this is probably something that happened when

they were to young to understand but still during their life time, so by teaching students this you

are showing an important thing that happened in their life and also showing them real life

discrimination that happens every day even if it over exagerating in this SNL clip.
Teaching with visuals.

In project three, teaching with visuals I was the most comfortable. We decided to do this

project separate instead of in groups and although I really enjoyed my group I felt as though for

this project I got to focus on my strengths as an elementary education major. I liked using

technology for this and this is something that I am the most likely to use in my classroom just

because of the intended age group on the project. I was really proud of this project because I had

the students use two different kinds of technology so that they could understand the information

with guided questions and also with questions that were not as guided. I also had to do some

editing in this video and really enjoyed that.

3a)How can the activities in this project connect students to one another? (social aspect of this

project)

This project because it is meant for younger students and because their is a game involved it will

bring people together through a little competetion, I think that this kahoot would also be good to

do with students if they were in groups so that would also help to connect them.

3b.)How can the activities in the project connect them to their own skills and interests?

This project for its intended age group will help them to think critically about something that

most of them already know, Paw Patrol. Most kids this age (5 and 6) are bombareded with adds

especially about Paw Patrol so they are probably already intrested in this show and that will help

to hold their interest in the project.

3c) How can you meet the needs of a variety of students with these activities?

By using two different kinds of technology for this project you are reaching different students,

although this was all about visuals I think by asking questions it will help the students to stay

focused.
3d)How can you use the media worlds of the students into creative and critical ways?

Students are most likely going to have their phones, so by letting them use them for the Kahoot

instead of fussing at them for having their phones out you are letting them have a little bit of

freedom and also teaching them.

3e)How can you get the students engaged enough to “think about” and/or “imagine” and/or “to

wonder” about the topics addressed?

Because watching TV is such a basic human task for most people I would hope that this project

would get my students to think critically about what they are seeing and maybe think about it

while they are seeing other information.

3f)How might the lessons in this project help students succeed in the 21st century?

The need for media literacy is growing and the need to spot fake news in growing, so by showing

kids this they will be able to think about this from the time they are elementary school.

Successes and Improvments.

I feel that I really did learn a lot from this course, I learned about media literacy but also

most important learned how I could teach it. I know that this is a very important skill for kids to

learn esecially as we are getting more and more entranced with technology and it is vitially

important that we understand fake news and real news. I am very glad that they make all

education majors take this class and not just people who are choosing to teach older kids because

it is so important for everyone to know this information and you are never to young to start to

learn about media literacy.

I think that I dramatically improved on my video editing during this course and I am very

excited about that, there is not much that I think I would change about myself in this course

except for the fact that on my final website all of my other pages are below the home tab and I
think that it makes it a little harder to navigate but it was either that or only have two of the

projects show on the tob menu.

Collaberating with others.

No words can describe how well I worked with my group and how much I enjoyed them,

this is probably one of the most fun and successful groups that I have ever been in and I am

really proud of the work we put out. I am very happy that they chose to be teachers because they

truelly do have good hearts and anyone would be lucky to be their students.

I thought we split up work load very equally, Tristan was the idea man and the script

man. While David was kind of the gopher, he seemed to do what no one else wanted to do and

that was extremly helpful to me and Tristan. I did the video editing and jumped in whereever I

felt someone needed me to do some work. In the second project David did most of the work, and

then had Tristan and I proof read and finish it up. We did such a great job though there wasn't

much to do and I was very happy that he took the reigns on that because he was much more

knowledgeable about the subject.
