Understanding Poetry

Poetry is a literary work of expression of human thoughts and


feelings whose language is bound by rhythm, dimension, rhyme, the
composition of lyrics and stanzas, and full of meaning. Poetry
prioritizes sounds, shapes and also the meaning to be conveyed. A
good work of poetry has profound meaning, meaning expressed by
solidifying all elements of language. The language of poetry is not the
same as the language we use everyday, Poetry uses concise but
meaningful language and the words used contain many insights. The
breadth of reader knowledge is very important when reading poetry,
because to find meaning in a poem, the reader must read the poem
carefully and pay attention to many factors in the poem.

B. Poetry Elements

In general, the elements of poetry can be divided based on its


structure into two types namely physical structure and inner
structure.

Physical Structure of Poetry

Typography: Typography is a form of poetry filled with words, left-


right edges, and has no arrangement of lines up to a line of poetry
that does not always begin with a capital letter and ends with a dot.
But this kind of thing can determine the meaning of a poem.
Diction: Diction is a word viewer used by the poet in his poetry.
Because poetry has a solid language then the selection of words that
fit and contain meaning must be done. Word selection is done by
considering rhythm, tone, and aesthetics (beauty of language).

Imaji: Imagination or more often referred to as imagination is an


element that involves the use of the human senses, such as visual
images, sound images and so forth. The use of images is intended to
enable the readers and listeners to imagine or imagine and even feel
what the poet feels.

Concrete word: concrete word is a word that allows the occurrence


of images, concrete words such as dusk gems can mean beach or a
suitable place to see the coming of dusk. A concrete word is
imaginative, giving rise to images.

Language Style: The language style is the use of language that is as if


to turn and cause connotation meaning by using figurative language.
Generally the style of language used in the form of majasic poetry
such as metaphorical majase, simile, anaphora, paradox and so forth.

Rhythm / Rima: Rhythm or rhyme is the sound equation at the


beginning, middle or end of the poem.
Inner Structure of Poetry

Theme: The theme is the main element in poetry because the theme
is closely related to the meaning resulting from a poem. Without a
clear theme will certainly produce poems that are not clear meaning.

Tone: Tone deals with the poet's attitude towards his readers.
Generally the tone used will vary like a pompous tone, high tone, low
tone and so forth.

Mandate: The message is a message contained in a poem. The


message can be found by interpreting the poem directly.

C. Types of Poetry

Poetry is divided into 2, namely:


1. Old poetry
2. New poem
1. New Poetry

Poetry is divided into two types, New Poetry is a type of poetry that
is no longer bound by rules that have a form freer than old poems in
everything such as rhymes, lines, stanzas, diction and so on.

Characteristics of New Poetry:


1. Be symmetrical or have a neat shape.
2. Have a regular poem.
3.Lebih use poetry poem, or pattern pantun.
4. Generally in the form of four strands.
5. Consists of syntactic unity (gatra).
6. Each gatara consists of 4 to 5 syllables.

2. Old Poetry
Understanding old poetry is a type of poetry that is still tightly bound
to the rules and rules of writing that apply such as:
1. Number of words contained on one line.
2. Number of sentence lines contained in one stanza.
3. Rhymes or rhymes.
4. Number of syllables.
5. The use of rhythm.

Characteristics of Old Poetry:


1. It is not known who the author of the poem is.
2. It is an oral literature because it is delivered and taught by word of
mouth.
3. Strongly bound to rules and rules that still apply such as language
style, diction, rhyme, intonation and so on.
Example of Poetry

A Never Die Hero

A teacher is a hero
Without a strings attached
They are candles in the dark
We could have an open mind because the strands of a teacher
Our souls can be wide because the advice of a teacher
They are heroes in a world
They are simple and promising calmness
Always be water in the desert
Always be a light in the middle of the night
We all need you
We will not be able to change the world without you
Our kids are poisoned without you
The teacher is a guide
They are a symbol of resurrection
They are a basic for education
Teachers are heroes

True Friends

Best friends stick together till the end,


They are like a straight line that will not bend.
They trust each other forever,
No matter if you’re apart you are together.
They can be your hero and save the day,
They will never leave your side they are here to stay.
They help you up when you fall,
Your true friends are best of all.
