Subject: Maintenuce of bypassed sections ofthe National Highways.

As per the extant polic! of the Minisrr). on rhe subtect cired above. issued vide
Cilcular nos. NllllyP/9/77 dated 30rr'Norcmber. lq77 and l2r, A.pril. log2. the section olthe
National Highway which has been blipassed would cease to be thc part of National Highwa),
network and would no longer vest in the Government of India. The tesponsibilit) of itshture
improvement and maintenance lics wilh the respective State Covernment.

2. However, requests are being received in the Ministry regarding carrying out improvement
works on such bypassed sections ofNational Highways due t,, pur"ity oi t -na, with the Stale
Governmcnts. lt has. accordingly, been dccided that before handing over the bypassed sections
ol the National High\a),s to rhe State Govemments, the improver;ent works in these sections
shall be ca(ied out through the f'unds of Central Governmeni as a one-time investment, keepins
in view the sile rcquirements, local needs ofthe area and the salcty reqLrirements eto.

3. The contents of this Circular mav be brought to the notice ol all concerned in lour
organization.
