1.0 INTRODUCTION

Creativity and Innovation (BFC 23702) is a course focuses on developing a creative

student that will eventually think creatively, strategically and critically. It is also acknowledging
skills that will later applied by students in solving problems and making decisions in future.

The first project that has been given is to build a bridge replica using bamboo stick. This
project will be given25% marks from the course. For our class, we have been divided by pair to
finish the project within 4 weeks and the presentation will be held in class on week 5.

Our bridge replica will be test due to strength and aesthetical value. A 1,500 liter water
bottle will be put on the bridge replica and will be expected to be able to support the weight of
the bottle and does not collapse.

2.0 CONCEPT

The concept that our group has been chosen is a truss bridge. A truss bridge is a bridge
where the load-bearing superstructure is composed of a truss, and usually the connected structure
is forming a triangular shape. The connected structure may be stressed from tension,
compression, or sometimes both in response to loads. Besides, the truss bridge uses horizontal
and diagonal pieces to create sturdy structures for each side of the bridge. Other than that, truss
bridges is one of the oldest types of modern bridges. A truss bridge is economical to construct
because it uses materials efficiently.

Truss is a structure made up of two or more members which normally considered to be

pinned or hinged at the joints. The figure below shows a list of trusses.

Figure 1.2 Our Bridge Replica “Aurum Bridge”

Figure 1.2 shows our complete bridge replica named Aurum Bridge. We chose Aurum
because it is originally from Latin language which means Gold.

Gold is a chemical element with the symbol of “Au” (from Latin: aurum) and the atomic
number is 79. Plus, in its purest form, it is a bright, the color is slightly reddish yellow, dense,
soft, malleable, and ductile metal. Chemically, gold is a transition metal thus can symbolize as
the transitional of the soul. Our bridge can be built to connect pedestrians to religious buildings
such as mosque, church or synagogue.

3.0 PROJECT DESIGN AND PROGRESS

3.1 THE DESIGNING PROCESS.

After a several weeks on sketching and designing we decided to take the examples from
previous truss bridge and innovate it. The design that we had finalized were focused on
minimalistic concepts as it is not only will minimized the cost but minimalistic is what most
buildings are following now. The design also uses many geometry such as triangles.
Triangles stabilize the forces on a truss bridge by directing all the forces on the bottom side
of the triangles, making them able to endure large loads.

However, there are slight changes to the design as we want it to be more simple and
minimal yet strong and sturdy.

6
3.2 THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS.

In construction of the bridge we had assemble all the materials needed . Each
panel is constructed seperately before being puzzled up together by using threads
that acts as a connecter between joints. This concept is the same as IBS. An
adherement such as glue was used to stick all the satay sticks together. Among the
materials that was used are as listed below :-
a) Wood Cutter
b) Glue
c) Satay stick
d) Thread

Figure 1.9: Constructing the bridge.

After the construction of the bridge was completely done a gold colored spray
was used to increase the aesthetical value. It is also correlates with the bridge theme and
purpose.

The bridge was left to dry and in the end the bridge was completely done and ready for
the weight ratio.

4.0 CONCLUSION

For this project, we have constructed a bridge replica by using bamboo sticks and tested
on its efficiency in withstanding loads. We have decided on build a truss bridge. In our bridge
replica testing, we successfully withstand a 1,500 milliliter water bottle and its weight. Thus, this
project has allowed us to understand the structure members work.

In addition, it is very important for us to understand how each member work together as a
whole structural system. Other than that, we also realized the importance of planning, in order of
smooth work progress and the time given between completion of bridge and the testing in class.
It is due to the efficiency of completing the bridge on time and giving some times for the
adhesives to dry out and maintaining its strength until the testing time.

Plus, we have found that workmanship is really hard in constructing a strong truss bridge.
The joints of two or more members have to fit between each other as nice as possible. The reason
is because during the testing, the load will be able to distribute evenly to each members. In a nut
shell, it has been a great experienced on working for this project.
