Q8 Please enter comments below related to the teacher candidate's lesson plan(s):

I reviewed lesson plans for the week's lessons math. The lesson plans were exemplary. They provided an excellent template format for
using the Backward's Design concepts and afforded Emily the opportunity to code and include each of the direct instruction lesson
components in a meaningful way. The plans indicated ongoing formative and summative assessment. The plans provide brief
statements about differentiation of instruction. I would prefer more detail on that. I would like to offer this format as an exemplar for other
student teachers to use in the future. Well done.

Q10 Please enter general comments below related to your observations.

I observed Ms. Simmons teaching a whole-group lesson on addition. She guided students, who were seated on the a large carpet,
through how to add three one-digit numbers by providing students two different strategies. She adopted one strategy a student offered,
drawing pictoral symbols to represent the numbers. Each student had his or her own small white board and solved problems alongside
the teacher. She wrote another math problem. She assessed student responses by having them hold up their white boards. She then
modeled how to solve the problem. Ms. Simmons introduced the next activity where she placed set of small puff balls on the document
camera and told students to "stack them up" saying "I want to see the numbers. She transitioned students back to their seats and
directed them to put away the small white boards and get out a pencil. States that she has a fun activity they are going to do. She asked
students, "How many numbers did we add today". One student answered three. She tells students what they will be doing and
demonstrated, using the document camera, how to complete a math worksheet using dice to get the one digit numbers they will add.
She had the students count along with her as she demonstrated. Then, she passed out the worksheets. Students were grouped to
complete the problems on the worksheet, alternating the student who rolled the dice for the team. Ms. Simmons walked around the
room and facilitated the activity. After some time passes, she instructed students to finish "the one" they were on and that she would
come around and collect the dice.

Q11 What went well:

Teacher use of interactive white board and document camera to ensure all students could see the material clearly, especially as she
demonstrated the learning activities for the children. Each student had a small white board which fostered student engagement during
whole group instruction. Effectively used cooperative learning in an interactive way.

Q12 What could be done differently:

Transitions might run more smoothly if Ms. Simmons dismissed a few students, or by tables, to go back to their seats. The group
learning activity explanation needed to be explained more clearly.

Q13 Candidate's strengths:

Students were actively engaged throughout the lesson. They were excited about learning when they were working together with the
math activity that incorporated the rolling of dice. Effective use of classroom management and attention-getting strategies. Students
were very responsive to Ms. Simmons instruction. She has clearly established positive relationships with students. She smiles often at
them and seems to enjoy teaching and working with the children - this is so important!

Q14 Areas that need refinement:

Consider using student helpers to come get worksheets for their table, collect the dice, etc. This gives students responsibility and frees
the teacher up to supervise the group. At the end of the lesson, provide a solid wrap-up closure statement to your lesson before having
students transition to another activity.

Q15 Focus for next observation:

Great work! This was my final observation. Emily is ready for her own classroom. She will be a fine teacher and her students are going
to love being in her classroom. As all teachers must, she should keep learning and refining her teaching practices, but she is already a
competence and confident teacher.
