season gearing up in Michigan,
Consumers Energy is reminding
people that hunting is not allowed
on the utility’s property.
The ban protects the safety
of neighbors, utility workers and
others. It also addresses the con-
cerns of neighboring landowners
that irresponsible hunters will use
Consumers Energy property to
trespass.
“We are asking Michigan hunt-
ers, sportsmen and sportswomen
to remember that Consumers En-
ergy property is private land, not
public property,” said Mike Wil-
liams, Consumers Energy’s direc-
tor of corporate security. “Respon-
sible hunters do not hunt on the
private property of others. We ask
that Consumers Energy land be
treated the same as other private
property, and we appreciate the
tact their local law enforcement
agency, or Consumers Energy’s
corporate security office at 1-800-
760-3295.
In particular, Williams noted
continuing problems with people
building deer blinds and placing
bait piles on Consumers Energy
land. Blinds reported to or dis-
covered by utility field represen-
tatives are “red tagged” and are
subject to demolition and removal
within seven days. Cost of remov-
al is charged to the owner of the
blind when ownership can be de-
termined. Last year about 40 tres-
passing blinds were tagged across
the state. Consumers Energy does
not rent land for hunting purpos-
es, or provide verbal or written
permission to do so.

Girl scouts get to work

Mr. and Mrs. R.J. McCahill of Newaygo,
and Mr. and Mrs. Sun Kuk of Sterling Heights
announced the engagement of their children
Caitlin McCahill and Daniel Kuk of Sterling
Heights. They are both graduates of Michi-
gan State in Lansing. They plan to marry in
October 2010 in Rochester Hills at St. Marys
Church.
On Saturday, Aug. 28 a small group of Girl Scouts
gathered to help get the entrance at the White Cloud
Upper Elementary School ready for the open house on
Wednesday, Sept. 1. The Scouts cleaned out the ground
cover by cleaning out the weeds growing in the cracks
of the sidewalks, pulled weeds, trimmed sidewalk edges
and east of entrance trimmed, raked and cleaned.
The work crew consisted of White Cloud Girl Scouts:
Kyleah Baker, 1st grade Daisy Troop 3719, Cara & Katie
Atwood, Jaycee Baker, Andrea Atwood & Jackie Bulson
7th grade Cadette Troop 20500 and Cassie, Brianna and
Jarod Watson and Keira Baker just helped because they
like to help. A great time was had and the school looks
great-we are all excited about the upcoming school year
and the next year of Girl Scouting.

ern and western Michigan. With the support of more
than 4,500 committed volunteers and 45 qualified staff

MCACA has announced the 2011
Minigrant Program, deadline
GRAND RAPIDS — 2011 Minigrant applications are due to
the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids no later than 5:00pm
on Monday, Nov. 1st or postmarked by Nov. 1st.
We are excited to announce that The Michigan Council for
Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) is continuing the Minigrant
regranting program for another year. As with last year’s pro-
gram, there will be one round of applications. All programs must
begin after February 1, 2011 and they must be completed on or
before September 30, 2011. All applications are due by Monday,
Nov. 1, 2010.
The Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids is the service
provider for MCACA’s Regional Regranting program for Kent,
Montcalm, Mecosta, Osceola, Lake, Newaygo and Ionia coun-
ties. We are one of 19 regions designated by MCACA to serve
as local administrators for the Minigrant program. Minigrants
provide up to $4,000 for locally developed, high quality arts and
cultural projects, which are special opportunities to address lo-
cal arts and cultural needs and increase public access to arts and
culture. Minigrants support a broad range of artistic expression
from all cultures through projects that preserve, produce, or
present traditional or contemporary arts and culture.
The arts and cultural projects that MCACA grants support
have significant benefits for our local communities. They posi-
tively impact the economy, schools, families, and civic involve-
ment in large cities and small towns throughout our region. In
2010, Minigrant support was given to 21 organizations. Among
them was “My Story Through Art,” a program offered through
Bethany Christian Services. The program partnered local foster
children with area artists to create paintings, pottery, and other
media that explored each child’s story. The Minigrant Program
also helped support a summer concert series held by the Sparta
Area Chamber of Commerce. “Concerts in the Park” drew the
community to Rogers Park for free performances by local musi-
cians each week during the months of July and August.

BAND
Newaygo High School band students attended
Band Camp at Lake Superior State University the
week of July 25, 2010. The students boarded the bus
on Sunday, July 25 at 6:30 a.m. and headed for Lake
Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michi-
gan, for an intense week of rehearsals and music to
prepare them for this year’s marching season.
Upon arrival in Sault Ste. Marie, the students un-
loaded the trailer and unpacked into their assigned
rooms. Lunch was served in the University’s cafete-
ria. This was followed by music rehearsal/sectionals
and field rehearsal. After three hours of rehearsals
and sectionals, the students had dinner. Afterwards
it was back to field rehearsal.
The days that followed included a wakeup call at
6 a.m., breakfast at 7 a.m., stretching and field re-
hearsal at 8 a.m., sectionals at 10:30 a.m., lunch be-
ing served at 11:45, mandatory down time in rooms
at 12:30 p.m., music rehearsal at 1:15 p.m., refresh-
ments at 2:50 p.m., field rehearsal at 3:10 p.m., din-
ner at 5 p.m., full band rehearsal at 6 p.m., evening
activities at 9 p.m., everyone to rooms at 10:30 p.m.,
and lights out at 11 p.m. The students were treated
to pool time on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and a cookout
with activities at 7:30 p.m.
Field rehearsal is the learning of steps to the
formations that the viewers see from the sidelines.
The steps are then added in with the music to make
beautiful formations. The students were given lan-

Sectionals is where each individual section: a)
trumpets, b) clarinets, c) flutes, d) the pit, e) drum
line, f) color guard, g) french horns and alto saxo-

then take what they learn in sectionals to music re-
hearsal, where all marching students get together
and work on the music as a group.
On Friday the students had wakeup call at 6 a.m.,
breakfast at 7 a.m., field rehearsal at 8 a.m., ate lunch
at 11:40 a.m., loaded the bus immediately afterwards
and were on the road home for Newaygo by 12:30
p.m. The students arrived back at the high school in
time for a 7:15 p.m. warm-up and performance at
7:45 p.m. at Newaygo High School.

making all the arrangements to pull another success-
ful band camp together, all the parents who donated
items for camp, and to the following chaperones for
helping band camp run smoothly and effortlessly:

As part of the princess application, each girl drew a picture of why she
wanted to be the Festival’s princess. Maureen Baker, a Tri County English
teacher was the pageant hostess. She asked each girl a few simple ques-
tions. Many of the girls said that their wish was to be the princess. All of
the girls were cute, had witty personalities, and would make a lovely prin-
cess so the judges had a difficult time in selecting just one girl. Judges for
the evening were Michelle Barker, Jamie Bunting, and Dauvan Mulally.
Deja Ayriss, the 2009 Harvest Festival Princess, gave her farewell
speech and advice to this year’s contestants. She crowned MaLeea Neely,
the 2010 Harvest Festival Princess. MeLeea will participate in area pa-
rades and community events along with the queen, Sarah Vuillemot and
her court, Ronna Kilts and Daytona Niles.

be raffled off during the Harvest Festival on September 18.
On-Going Used Book Sale: The committee, consisting of Toni W., Linda G. and
Patricia S., met with Janice to go over some guidelines to be followed in order to have
used books available for sale throughout the year. Motion by Toni W. and seconded by
Marjorie M. to purchase a book cart to be used to hold the books. All approved.

A Request: A request was made to consider changing the day that the FOL meets.
Several people have expressed interest in joining the group, but need to meet on a
different day. Discussion will continue on this request.
February Meetings: After a discussion of the membership, a motion by Arlene B. and
seconded by Brenda B. to cancel FOL meetings during the month of February. Many of
the members are away during this month.
Tour of Homes: Brenda B. reported three homes have been confirmed for the Home
Tour to be held on December 4. We are still looking for at least one more home for
the tour.
October Used Book Sale: Chairperson Toni W. passed around a sign up sheet for
workers for the fall Used Book Sale that will take place on Thursday, October 14 from
10am to 7pm, Friday, October 15 from 10am to 5pm and Saturday, October 16 from
10am to 2pm. This sale will take place at the library.
Committees for 2011: The membership started to discuss Events and Committees for
2011. This will continue at next month’s meeting.

Book Discussion Group: The book for October is “Island Beneath the Sea” by Isabel
Allende. The book discussion will take place on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 1:30pm in
the library reading room. In addition, there will be a combined book discussion at the
Sand Lake Library on October 19, 2010 at 1:30pm. The book to be discussed will be
“Mudbound” by Hillary Jordan.

Facility Planning Meeting
The Tri County Area Schools’ Board of Education
Facilities Committee will host a Facilities Planning
Meeting on Monday, September 20, 2010, beginning
at 6:30 p.m. in Tri County High School Media Center.
The goal is to establish a committee consisting of parents,
staff, community members and administration to access
the needs of our district, devise an implementation plan
and look for funding options. If you are interested in
serving on this committee please plan to attend on
Monday, September 20th at 6:30 p.m.
Tri County Area Schools is pleased
to be participating in the
Great Start Readiness Program
for children who are four years of age or turn four
years of age by December 1st. The Great Start Readi-
ness Program is a free preschool program for students
who meet eligibility requirements. The program will
begin Monday, October 11th, 2010. Applications are
now available at MacNaughton Elementary, Sand Lake
Elementary, and the Administrative Office.
Deadline for applications is Friday, October 1st.

The Ensley Township Board is currently seeking bids for the
removal of a tree and grinding the stump at Crandall Cem-
etery at 8311 22 Mile Road and tree trimming at the Town-
ship Hall at 7163 120th Street and at North Ensley Cemetery
at 8377 104th Street. More information can be obtained by

Library Director Ashley Hawley
Reading Program gave away 3 Bicycles. New hours for Library, beginning August
1st, 2010 are Tuesday 12:00 to 5:00 pm, Wednesday 12:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday 12:00
to 5:00, Saturday 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Book drive every Saturday. Pancake break-
fast August 14, at the Newaygo County Sportsman Club.
Announcements
August 14, there will be tours at Hardy Dam if anyone is interested in touring the
Dam. Also we are having the Conklin Park dedication with a softball game between
Croton Township and Big Prairie. On Sunday August 15, at 2: pm we are present-
ing a plaque in honor of Mr. Robert Timmerman for securing the Croton Township
Campground and helping to make it what it is today. Road Millage passed on the
August primary ballot.

John Carry discusses the mess on Croton Hardy Dr. and is there anything being
done about it? Supervisor Howarth replies “there will be a ticket issued.”
David Reese will be attending PC meeting in September. Karen Reese discusses the
Swan issue on Croton Pond. The Croton Township Board will talk with the DNRE
to see what steps have to be taken to handle the problem.

Science teacher, Randy Cook, received a chemistry grant from The
American Chemical Society (ACS) in July of 2010. The ACS awards
this grant to selected high school chemistry teachers with innovative
ideas for transforming the teaching and learning of chemistry.
The $1,500 grant was awarded for the pH in Real Time Project.
“The students will be collecting rain water, collecting water samples
from area lakes, rivers and streams, and will be performing a series of
experiments finding the pH of samples and using pH in performing
several experiments.”
Randy plans on using the grant for purchasing three Vernier LabQuest
data collection devices, pH sensors, and conductivity probes.

Girl’s youth basketball season is in full swing. This year’s program

for the second through fourth grade girls will be working with the High
School Girls’ Varsity Basketball coach, Wes Zerlaut, and his staff, on the
proper basketball fundamentals.

16, and run for four additional Saturdays (10/23, 10/30, 11/6, & 11/13),
from 9:00-10:30 am, in the gym at Tri County High School.

starch are eaten, they are broken down by enzymes (amylase) to glucose. This is absorbed into the blood.
When the blood sugar goes up, the pancreas increases insulin production. The insulin then attaches to an
insulin receptor on the surface of the cell (like a docking station). This signals glucose transport pumps to be
inserted into the cell membrane. These pumps them carry the glucose into the cell
reducing the blood sugar. If the sugar load is too high, too fast, very high insulin is
produced. This high insulin damages the insulin receptor, causing the glucose transport
pumps to be reduced instead of increased. This leads to high sugar which in turn leads

of working on her weight concerns we did some blood tests. Included in that was an
insulin level which should be below 17. Her insulin level was 195 with normal blood
sugar. This means she is pre-diabetic, and constantly compensating to keep the blood
sugar in its normal range. Eventually she will be unable to adjust and she will become
