Blending Control System

Advantages of Inline Blending
(1) Increased tank utilization
Finished product tanks can be fully utilized because additional adjustments are not normally required.
(2) Flexibility of blending operation
In-line blending operation is more flexible than tank blending because of the following reasons:
- Blend size can be changed at any time to accommodate changes to shipping requirements.
- Product delivery can be performed from finished product tanks which are receiving the blended
product.
- Products can be blended from component tanks and pumped directly to pipeline or bulk carries.
(3) Shorter blending time
Availability of the finished product for sampling in the blend header and for testing and recipe correction
eliminates many of the operations required by tank blending. Product tank holding time for mixing,
sampling, testing, and final adjustment is eliminated. This also contributes to a reduction in manpower
requirements for the blending operation.
(4) Better quality control and minimum quality giveaway
Precise ratio control of components and additives and use of the on-line analyzers for qualitymeasurement can maintain the quality of the finished product.
Valuable components and expensiveadditives can be added with minimum giveaway.
(5) Reduced loss of light hydrocarbons
The in-line blending of butane results in nearly complete absorption of the butane by the gasoline with
minimum loss through the tank vent system. Loss is experienced in the tank blending case when the
butane is introduced into a product tank and the short travel of the bubbles precludes complete absorption.
