1) “Giraffe’s Can’t Dance” by Giles Andraea


2) Music player
3) Music: waltz, cha- cha, and ballet instrumentals
4) Print out of images from the text.
5) Tape
6) Board
7) Animal crackers

V. Directions / Steps / Process [Parts A, B C]:

A. Motivation
I will play instrumentals from the dances that will be featured in the reading.
I will ask the children, “Has anyone heard this music before?”.
I will ask the children, “Do any of you like to dance?”
I will ask the children to name their favorite dances.
I will tell the children that we will be learning about new dances in “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andraea.

B. Steps

1) The children will assist me with reading “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andraea.
2) I will ask comprehension questions based on the text.
3) As I read the text I will ask questions.
a) “What problem is the Giraffe having?”
b) “How are the other animals treating the Giraffe?”
c) “How do you think that makes him feel?”
(After the Giraffe overcome not being able to dance will further the questions)
d) “How did the Giraffe overcome his problem?”
e) “Can we name some dances that were done in the book?”
f) “Did everyone do the same dance in the book?”
4) I will have a chart on the board titled “First, Middle, and Ending”.
5) I will hold up an image from the text.
6) I will ask the children “Did this happen in the beginning of the book, the middle or the ending?”
7) I will tape the image under the category it belongs in.
8) I will hold up the second image.
9) I will ask the children “When did this happen in the book? In the beginning, middle or ending?”
10) I will tape the image under the category it belongs in.
11) I will hold up the final image.
12) I will ask the children “When did this happen in the book? In the beginning, middle or ending?”
13) I will tape the final image on the board.
14) I will tell the children “We are going to name the dances the animals are doing in the images.”
15) I will have images from the text of the animals dancing.
16) I will encourage the children to name the dances the animals from the text are doing.
17) I will demonstrate the dances to the class with the help of a student volunteer to help the children
better understand each dance.
18) I will instruct the student that volunteered to sit with their peers.

C. Conclusion and Transition

Conclusion
I will ask the children individually what their favorite dance is.
The children will demonstrate the dance as they state it.

Transition
The children will demonstrate their favorite dance.
I will instruct the children to wash their hands and prepare for snack.
The children will have animal crackers.
