Dear Advisory Board:

My area topic is centered around the lack of funding of families with special needs individuals. I
chose this area because I feel passionate about giving those with special needs a chance of a
greater future. Through the making of my Capstone Experience project I have learned the
funding availabilities for families. I have developed a better understanding of the hardships
encountered while raising a child with special needs.

My thesis statement is as follows: Funding should be provided for families with special needs
individuals because the medical expenses can lead to financial instability, their parents are under
an immense amount of financial stress, and low funds cause disabled children to be unleveled in
education and societal standards. To guide my research I questioned the money provided by the
government to families with special needs in contrast to the amount needed to adequately
provide for them and the family as an entirety.

For my product, I plan to conduct an interview with the parents of a special needs child. I will
ask them their take on the hardships faced while trying to adequately provide for their child.
Getting out of my comfort zone and having to sit down to discuss this topic with a family will be
my biggest challenge. Luckily, I will have Exceptional Children Lead Teacher Jennifer Hankins
be my expert. She will help provide me with a willing family to participate in my interview. In
addition to providing me with the knowledge necessary to learn about the lives and needs of
special needs children.

Plagiarism is being academically dishonest. It is taking someone else’s research/knowledge and

acting as if it is your own. It is important to avoid plagiarism not only because it is a form of
dishonesty, but because of risking one’s academic integrity. Being an ethical person is
something that people should see as an outstanding quality. An ethical person is one who holds
honesty to a high level, and wouldn’t plagiarize. This is an important quality to possess because
it helps the learning experience when ideas aren’t copied and a sense of originality along with
free-thinking is developed.

Sincerely,

Carlea Thomas
