young adulthood, helps ensure lifelong faith and service. Psalm 71 testifies to this

these formative years continue to bear fruit throughout a person’s life.

By giving to the Pentecost Offering, one of the four Special Offerings of the Pres-

PYOCA Retreat 2018

33 CPC members and friends had a great weekend with beautiful weather. Here is a sample of our ac-
tivities:

The children’s handprints added to our worship poster

Everyone worked HARD to prepare the camp for summer

Fun times included campfire, the climbing wall
and fellowship (most of our pictures include the
babies!)
During its April meeting, session reviewed reports from commissions and committees and transacted rou-
tine business.
Featured Report: Church Life-Church Action
Susan Hoffman presented information about the work of the commission. Eileen Whalen and Brenda Green
are sharing the leadership. The commission is responsible for coffee hour, baby showers, Salt Shakers, the
church picnic, Bike and Build, a bazaar if held, helping with Souper Bowl of Caring, the Easter egg hunt, and
Hanging of the Greens, and promoting any other church activities. This year’s sale during the Holypalooza
celebration was successful, and proceeds were split between the renovation fund and the mission fund. Su-
san reiterated that the charge to the commission was to promote fellowship.
Interim Pastor’s Report: There will be a called meeting of the session on Sunday, April 22, to approve the
baptism of Raven Durbin. After moderating the Unity session meetings for the last three months, he is glad
to see Rev. Andrew Black back at work. Valeri Kershaw reported kudos for Rev. Buchanan’s vesper services
at Westminster Village.
Treasurer’s Report
The report for the month of March was approved with thanks. Year to date amounts look good.

Operating Fund Sum- Month of March Balance Sheet Summary 3/31/2018

Beginning of Month $81,699.11 Current Assets $744,903

Income $20,630.19 Fixed Assets $2,980,000
Expenses $27,161.09 Short Term Liabilities $2321
End of Month $75,168.21 Long Term Liabilities $405,000
Net Worth (Fund Balance) $3,317,582

Christian Educator’s Report: Rev. Scott Paul-Bonham will lead worship and serve communion at the Pyoca
retreat. VBS will be in the mornings from June 4- 8.
Clerk’s Report: Communion was served during worship on Sunday, April 1, and home communion was
served to Mary Jean DeMarr (3 served) at Westminster Village on March 14. New officers were ordained
and installed during worship on March 18. During the June meeting we will finalize the opening and closing
duties for July. Session agreed that it is appropriate to use volunteers who are not elders in active service
for this role.
Deacons: the board met earlier today. There will be an uptick in Meet the Need requests as Duke Energy
resumes billing enforcement after the winter months. The deacons will take the Lee family under their wing
and host a goodbye celebration; cards are welcome. Murray Pate and Miller Bough are working on a joint
deacons/youth fall fundraising project.
Communications: The commission has developed a schedule for hanging outdoor banners and shared
that with Alvin Stinnett, who will hang them.
Facilities: Industrial Appraisal is to send a contractor. The Knox Box and AED have been ordered. Con-
tractor Mike Johnson will work with Arsee Engineering to determine the right kind of mortar and contrac-
tor to do the tuck pointing.
Finance: The financial reviews should be wrapped up this summer. The capital campaign remains about
$40,000 to the good with accelerated payment of some pledges and some new or increased pledges.
Alan Harder has indicated that contributions made in memory of Marsha should be directed toward
the Surrell fund. The commission is concerned that we are underinsured when we consider the
amount to rebuild an appropriate building. The piano fund has more than is needed to maintain the pi-
ano; can some of this be diverted to other purposes? The music fund is used to purchase music, fund a
cantata, and take care of robes.

Worship: the commission is pleased with the services for Lent and Easter. They would like to host the
Milliken Choir (40-50 voices) next January 20 for a community concert. Session approved using $1000
from the Louise Danner fund to pay the concert guarantee.

Mission: the committee is looking congregation-wide for those interested in working on refugee issues
and plans to form a team. The letter campaign for Bread for the World is coming up with a goal of
1000 letters from Terre Haute.

Pastor Nominating Committee: the committee has conducted a mock interview (with Kevin Bu-
chanan) and has learned some things about using Skype for interviews. They anticipate some real inter-
views in the next few weeks.

Youth News — Connor Scanlon

Past Events

The youth have been pre paring for Youth Sunday at Centenary on May 6 th and Central May
13th. The theme is relationships, which is what we have talked about all year in youth group.
From our relationship with God, others and even ourselves.

We had an auction at Centenary on April 15th to raise money for the mission the youth will
be going on this summer. We raised over $1,000, which is something only God could do.
Thank you to everyone who prayed, donated, and bid at this event. The youth appreciate all
of your help.

Mission Trip

The youth will be going to Nashville TN for the mission trip this summer. We have been in
the process of doing fundraisers to bring the $265 down for students. Last year out of $250,
students only had to pay $85. We hope to have around the same outcome this year. On top
of the auction we are also doing 2 dinner fundraisers. We will have one at Fazoli’s from 11
a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday May 10th and one at IHOP from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday
May 17th. 20% of your bill will go towards funds for the youth group. All you have to do is
come, eat, and tell them you are there for the 7th cents youth fundraiser.

The Mission Committee invites interested

CPCers to a next steps dialogue on refugee/
immigrant ministry. We have been doing
some research and want to engage the broader
CPC community in the discussion. This conversa-
tion will be 10 minutes after Fellowship Hour be-
gins following worship on May 6. We will meet in
the room on the right in Fellowship Hall.
