1. In a series LCR circuit voltage across inductor, capacitor and resistor are VL, VC and VR
respectively. What is the phase difference between (i) VL and Vc and (ii) VL and VR? [1]
2. In an AC circuit instantaneous voltage and current are 𝑉 = 200 sin 300𝑡 V and
𝐼 = 800𝑐𝑜𝑠300𝑡 A respectively. What is the average power dissipated in the circuit? [1]
3. In a series LCR circuit VL = VC  VR. What is the value of power factor? [1]
4. What are the values of capacitive and inductive reactance in a dc circuit? [1]
5. (a) An em wave is travelling in a medium with a velocity v = v𝑖̂ . Draw a sketch showing
the propagation of the em wave, indicating the direction of the oscillating electric and
magnetic fields.
(b) How are the magnitudes of the electric and magnetic fields related to the velocity of the
em wave? [2]
6. When an inductor L and a resistor R in series are connected across a 12V, 50Hz supply, a current
of 0.5A flows in the circuit. The current differs in phase from applied voltage by π/3 radian.
Calculate the value of R. [2]
7. Answer the following questions:
a) Show, by giving a simple example, how em waves carry energy and momentum.
b) How are microwaves produced? Why is it necessary in microwave ovens to select the
frequency of microwaves to match the resonant frequency of water molecules?
c) Write two important uses of infra-red waves.
d) Write following in the increasing order of their frequency and write one use of each of
the following electromagnetic radiations:
(i) Microwaves
(ii) Ultra-violet rays
(iii) Gamma rays [2]

8. A resistor of 400 , an inductor of 𝜋 H and a capacitor F are connected in series across
𝜋
a source of alternating voltage of 140 sin 100𝜋𝑡 V. Find the voltage(rms) across the resistor,
the inductor and the capacitor.
Is the algebraic sum of these voltages more than the source voltage? If yes, resolve the
paradox? [2]
9. In an electromagnetic wave propagating along + y-axis electric field vector is
E =4X103Cos(3x108t–1.5y) V/m. What is
(i) the frequency of em wave

(ii) amplitude of magnetic field.
(iii) Write the equation for the magnetic field part of the wave (also the direction of
oscillation of magnetic field). [3]
10. A series LCR circuit with L = 4.0 H, C = 100 mF and R = 60 Ω is connected to a variable
frequency 240 V source as shown in Calculate: (i) the angular frequency of the source which
derives the circuit at resonance; (ii) the current at the resonating frequency; (iii) the rms potential
drop across the inductor at resonance. [3]
11. A step-up transformer is operated on 2.5 kV line. It supplies a load with 20 A. The ratio
of the primary winding to the secondary is 10:1. If the transformer is 90% efficient,
calculate
(i) The power output.
(ii) The voltage and
(iii) The current in the secondary coil. [3]
12. (a) A series LCR circuit is connected to an a.c. source of variable frequency. Draw a suitable
phasor diagram to deduce the expressions for the amplitude of the current and phase angle.
(b) Obtain the condition at resonance. Draw a plot showing the variation of current with the
frequency of a.c. source for two resistances R1 and R2 (R1 > R2). Hence define the quality factor,
Q and write its role in the tuning of the circuit.

13. (a) Draw a schematic arrangement for winding of primary and secondary coil in a transformer
when the two coils are wound on top of each other.(b) State the underlying principle of a
transformer and obtain the expression for the ratio of secondary to primary voltage in terms of
the
(i) number of secondary and primary windings and
(ii) primary and secondary currents.
(c) Write the main assumption involved in deriving the above relations.
(d) Write any two reasons due to which energy losses may occur in actual transformers. [3]
14. Deduce the expression for the average power dissipated in a series LCR circuit in terms of power
factor. Hence show that average power dissipated at resonance is maximum. [3]
