INTERNATIONALCOLLEGE OF THE CAYMANISLANDS

COURSE SYLLABUS
The mission of the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) is to prepare students for career
placement and enhancement. The ICCI education instills attitudes, behaviors, sensitivities, skills and
knowledge that are essential to life and learning. The ICCI experience advances the potential for
leadership and a commitment to community service. ICCI equips graduates with practical skills of
critical thinking, problem solving and self-directed learning for success in the 21st century job market.

Course Title: Seminar on Cayman Islands


Course Number: SO 430
Course Description: Study of the history, and the social, economic, cultural and political
structure of the Cayman Islands, includes lectures, readings and field
experience.

Participating/Attendance You must attend all field trips, activities, and lectures associated with
this seminar in order to avoid grade deductions for participation. Please
aim to participate by making valuable contributions to discussions
throughout the duration of the seminar. For every “missed” day of
seminar’s field trips, 5 points will be deducted from your total
Reflection Grade. Late submissions and/or late arrivals will attract point
deductions as well.
Cultural Presentation In teams (your team mate is your chosen ballot name), you will select
one aspect of the Know Your Cayman Islands Workshop and customize
your own “Know My Cayman Islands” Workshop to fully train and
engage your participants (class mates & invited guests) in that area.

Areas of Interest are:


1. Cayman’s historical sites and monuments and Cayman’s
indigenous flora and fauna
2. Cayman’s cultural food and beverage and Cayman’s
folklore and dance
3. Cayman’s Politics and State of Government and Cayman’s
National Symbols, Flag, Song and Anthem

These Workshops will be conducted on Wednesday, June 6th, 2018


at 6:00 pm. You will need to invite at least one expert in your given
areas, who will also be included in the Judging Panel. You will need
to confirm your invited guest expert no later than May 25, 2018.
There will be other specially invited guest judges.

You are allowed to invite at least two individuals (one must be a
student) who have not done the PRIDE program before.
You must secure props, display items, brochures etc. by June 4,
2018. Location: MH 2.

The E-Portfolio requirement will be as follows:
This is the grade for the overall e-Portfolio. The e-Portfolio is not due until the June 12, 2018 but there
are some of the items which will have an earlier due date on Populi.

Here is a model of the sections of your final e-Portfolio:

1. Introduction
Introduction which includes your name, your Major and Concentration (if applicable), your course
name, course number and course description, Student Learning Outcomes, and a copy of your
syllabus (use official one posted on Populi).

2. Reflection Papers
Copies of your Reflection papers on each of your Seminar Field Trips' Experience.

3. Photo Essay
Post at least 10 photos taken during your Seminar Field Trips. Give an explanation of each photo.

4. Community Outreach
Community Outreach Photo Overview Essay with a minimum of 5 photos with an explanation (at
least 3 sentences) of each photo.

5. My “Know Your Cayman Islands” Workshop


Video recording of your presentation along with relevant photos, documents etc.

Community Outreach Activity Requirements:


As discussed, please see the attached flyer on the Newlands Annual Neighborhood Clean Up (posted
online).

You will assist in the roadside clean-up activities starting at the ICCI campus.

You will be supplied with garbage bags and gloves. We will provide light refreshments afterwards.

Date: April 21, 2018


Time: 7 a.m.

You will need to create a short video clip (max. 5 minutes) featuring you doing your part in the
clean-up exercise, and share what you learnt from this activity.
