2. Where possible, teachers will switch classes for the conduct of the examination.
3. The oral examination should take place during the two weeks scheduled for the conduct of
the practical and oral examinations.
4. The Division of Educational Research and Evaluation will provide reading passages and
questions for conversations, along with scoring rubrics.
5. Materials relevant to the examination must at all times be treated with the strictest
confidentiality.
6. Administrators should ensure that all candidates are aware of the form the examination will
take and the date and time at which they will be examined. Each student will be examined
for 5-10 minutes.
7. Schools should ensure that the arrangements for the conduct of the examinations are
satisfactory and that examination rooms are as quiet as possible and should contain
adequate accommodation for teacher (a table and chair) and student (chair).
8. Candidates preparing for the examination can be provided with the passages/ topics under
supervision, 5 - l0 minutes before the examination. These should be collected following
the interview.
9. All copies of the final mark sheets should be submitted to the Examinations Section,
Ministry of Education, immediately after completion of the examination of all students'

understand the questions.

INSTRUCTIONS TO EXAMINERS
Z. The first part is a Reading Passage to be read out loud by the student. The passage
is to be given to the student who should be allowed 5-10 minutes to prepare before he
/ she is required to read it.
3. The second part is an Interview. Six (6) topics are provided. The student is to be
asked approximately eight (8) questions by the teacher. The teacher should choose
fwo to three questions from three (3) different topics'
4. The rubrics (scoring guides) provided in this paper must be used to score both
sections.

Vowels

ff - like ni in [onion]
q - like k in [kick], always written in combination with u which is then silent.
r- the tongue is rolled. There is no equivalent English sound.
if the word begins with r or there is a rr, the sound is hvo rolls of the tongue.
Ytt,
Y - like Spanish vowel i or English y in [yes]: like jy - yo at the beginning of i word.
z- like ks in [extra] in Latin America or like th in [thin] in Spain.
Combination of Vowels
A combination of a strong vowel [a, e and o] and a weak vowel [i and u] or two weak vowels
forms a dipthong and is treated as one syllable. The stress falls on:
the strong vowel if there is one: cuando, aula,
the second of the two weak vowelsl. viudo, cuidado
N.B. In que,like the word [cay], and qui,like the word [key], the vowels combine to produce
one sound. Also in gue,like the word [gay], and gui,like the word [geese].
In a combination of two strong vowels, each vowel retains its individual sound and it counts as
two syllables when applying the rules for stress. E.g. poenta , rodear

Carnival
Del Carnaval al calipso, del Steelpan a luchas con palos, Trinidad y Tobago posee
una rica cultura derivada de su historia y diversa poblacion. Muchos paises en el
mundo cuentan con Carnaval, pero en ninguno es tan impresionante como nuestra
fiesta nacional. Uno puede ser espectador, o cubrirse con barro, chocolate o pintura
y participar en J'Ouvert. Miles de personas disfrutan de lucir un vestuario fabuloso
