Activity #3 Summary of Research Projects

1) Group Projects
Is there a standardized spatial hierarchy discernible in family plots, based on
positions or prominence/size of markers?
Our group has decided to choose this topic to discover if there is spatial
hierarchy discernible in family plots based on the positions and size of the markers. We
will document the measurements between the markers and the measurements of the
single marker in a plot. Using this data we will create a standpoint on whether the spatial
hierarchy in family plots is highly discernible or less discernible in Old City. We have
several family plots to compare with a wide variety of size. We will be looking at the
measurement data from our survey and the hierarchy we see in these family plots in
accordance to spouses and ages of children. We will also be looking at the dates of
death in family plots and the plot scale drawings our group put together. Some skills we
may need to learn to further explore this research topic would be how to utilize 3-D data
from drones used in class.

2) Individual Project
This project will examine the differences in degradation between the Confederate
markers in the southeast quadrant and the Union markers in the southwest
quadrant of the cemetery. In addition to degradation, the relative upkeep of the markers
will be compared. The basic methodology from our class will apply, but I will also use
any other resources available, such as records from the Daughters of the Confederacy
regarding marker replace and the Union equivalent, if any.
