The successful completion of this study would not be possible without the input and advice of
various persons. First and foremost, I want to thank God for helping me in the process of this
research. He has given me the knowledge and strength that I had needed in the process of
completing this research. I would also like to thank my cousin Diandra Reid who has assisted me
throughout my entire S.B.A and my family for giving me all the support. Thank you all a lot.

Statement of problem
Topic; Unemployment

What are the causes and effects of unemployment on individuals in Long Lane in Lances Bay?

3
Rational for selecting area of study

The researcher has chosen this particular topic because it is a prevalent social issue. For the past
four (4) years, many persons have been talking about the increasing trend in the rate of
unemployment in the study area. The researcher has studied the topic in Social Studies and
would like to get a deep understanding of it. It is the aim of this research to use efforts to fund
4
workable solutions to deal with the high level of unemployment in the arena. By doing so
persons can develop their full potential, achieve self-actualization and contribute to community
development. There is also the sense of hopeless, inactiveness and health problems such as
depression when persons who should be employed are not working however, while government
has the power of promoting economic stability and decreasing unemployment. The education
system must also take responsibility for providing skills and training for young people and the
unemployed. Training and retraining for available jobs needs to be accessible to all who should
be working in order to decrease unemployment. I also urge that skills learnt should be used to
create self-employment in order to avoid the downfalls of unemployment.

Method of investigation

The researcher has chosen questionnaires as a data gathering tool. This decisions was made due
to the benefits it has for both the researcher and respondent, these include:

1. It guarantees anonymity
. It is fairly inexpensive when compare to other data gathering methods
. It is capable of gathering data from a wide cross section or persons in a relatively short period
5
of time.

Procedures used to collect data

As mentioned earlier, the area that was researched was done for one hundred (100) households.
There were 40 persons giving out the questionnaires, a total of twenty (40) questionnaires were
given between the ages of 19-36 years. From the questionnaires given, we received all 40 from
each persons who are unemployed and employed. From the questionnaires the percentage of
males and females who are unemployed will be drawn.
The following calculation was done. After deciding on the sample size, the task at hand was to
choose a suitable method of sampling. The researcher has therefore, selected random samples, as
this method gives everyone an equal chance of being selected. The number of all houses in the
community was on slips of paper which were folded and place in a box. The box was closed and
shaken vigorously to ensure a thorough mixture of the numbers. A total of fourth slips were
drawn from the box, one at a time, while shaking the box in the process.
Interviews along with the questionnaires will be done throughout the 100 household to get the
reasons why the persons in Long Lane are unemployed. They were chosen randomly. There were
collect on December 28, 2017 at approximately 5:30 pm

be enrolled in a good college to further your education.

2. Government can copy and hand out benefits if they are in education or training

Government can offer subsides to firms to set up a particular area and invest in new technologies,
