How Your Kidneys Function

There are two kidneys in the human body. Each kidney plays a vital role in

maintaining balance within the entire system. The most important function

of the kidneys is to separate the toxins or toxic materials from the blood so

that the body maintains its balance and is not chemically disturbed.

Understanding fully how kidneys function helps to insure they will be

healthy.

Anatomically speaking, the kidneys are two organs which are located beside

the column of the vertebra and below the ribs. The right kidney is slightly

lower than its left half. Shaped like a bean, the kidneys are about ten

centimeters long and six centimeters wide.

The functioning kidneys

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

The kidneys have numerous functions and one of which is to separate

mineral salts, urea and waste products which may become harmful to the

body if included in the blood. The kidneys also have the capability to

conserve electrolytes, salts and water if the body signals any lack of the

same. If one kidney fails to function normally there is still a chance of

surviving provided the other is still functioning properly. There must be at

least one kidney doing its job for the human body to survive.

Collecting Waste Products

In technical terms, the kidneys are collectors of waste products produced

from metabolism and by the body working as a whole. The kidneys process

about two hundred quarts of blood to be able to drain two quarts of extra

water and waste products that eventually convert as urine. Urine flows to

the bladder which is considered as the reservoir of urine. When the bladder

becomes distended because of the stored urine, it then flows through the

ureters down to your urethra resulting in the urge of using the restroom.

Wastes inside the body are produced from the breakdown of active muscles

and from the food that is eaten. These waste products are then sent to the

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

blood in order to be filtered. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, they

are unable to remove waste. If that happens, the waste will eventually build

up and flow with the blood resulting in damage to the body.

Filtering Waste Products

Actual filtering usually occurs within the tiny units found inside the kidneys.

The filtering armies inside the kidneys are called the nephrons. For every

kidney, there are about one million nephrons. Inside the nephrons, there are

capillaries (tiny blood vessels). These capillaries intertwine with tubules.

These tubules carry urine. Within the capillaries and tubules, chemical

exchange takes place, and then the process of water and waste materials

leaving the body occurs.

Maintaining Balance

The kidneys also have the ability to maintain the body’s chemical and

mineral balances. The balance within the body is called homeostasis. There

are several ways that water leaves the body. It can come out as sweat,
Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
breath and urine. There is also water whenever you have bowel movements.

The kidneys, on the other hand, are mainly concerned with converting your

waste materials into urine.

Thirst Regulation

When a person feels thirsty, the brain will communicate with your kidneys to

retain more fluids inside the body. Fluid retention will happen when the brain

sends out hormones passing it to the kidneys which will then signal the

kidney to hold onto fluids. The moment you drink, the hormones responsible

for telling the kidneys to store fluids will eventually go down and will then

result in letting go of more fluids.

Other kidney functions

Kidneys don’t rest. They are always up and going even when one is asleep.

Aside from blood filtering and balancing, the kidneys also have the capability

to react with hormones send by the brain. Furthermore, the kidneys can

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

produce hormones of their own. Hormones produced by the kidneys are

beneficial for the body functioning normally.

Kidneys technically function as importantly as the heart. If the kidney fails to

do its job, then the body suffers. Kidney malfunction may be the source of

complications. That is why it is of utmost importance that one takes good

care of the kidneys for them to function well.

Kidney Diseases

Kidney diseases are different kinds of disorders that occur when the

nephrons are damaged. Damage caused by kidney diseases occurs

gradually over a period of several years. Kidney disease presents subtle

symptoms. These symptoms are often not recognized by the patient

thereby making it difficult to diagnose in the earlier stages.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Kidney Disease Types

The three types of kidney disease are: congenital, hereditary and acquired.

Congenital kidney disease

If the urinary tract is malformed it usually leads to an obstruction. That

obstruction may subsequently produce infection or destruction of the kidney

tissue. If the destruction progresses, it can result in kidney failure.

Hereditary kidney disorder

These are transmitted to both sexes producing symptoms which are

prevalent during teenage years up to adulthood. One of the most common

hereditary kidney diseases is a condition called as polycystic kidney

disorder.

Polycystic kidney disorder is a type of genetic kidney disease that is

characterized by growth of cysts inside the kidneys. These cysts are filled

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

with fluid and can substantially enlarge the kidneys. This will result in the

reduction of the normal functioning status of the kidney which may

eventually lead to kidney failure.

Acquired kidney disorder

Generally termed as nephritis or inflammation of the kidney, acquired

kidney disease may come in many forms and one of the most common types

of inflammation is glomerulonephritis. Glomerulonephritis is the

inflammation of the glomeruli (structure inside the kidney which aids in the

filtering of blood).

Some of the other kinds of kidney diseases are as follows:

Kidney stones – considered as the most common kidney disease that causes

much pain. The pain usually radiates from the side and back then moving

down to the groin. Kidney stones are formed due to malformation of

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
absorption, infection or it just occurs with no specific problem. Pain is

experienced during passing of the stone and disappears as it is excreted in

the urine.

Nephrotic syndrome – this is a kidney disorder which allows large amounts

of protein to pass through the urine without being absorbed in the body. This

is frequently associated with blood proteins that have a low level, increased

fluid retention and an increase in blood cholesterol. These may eventually

cause edema or swelling of a particular part of the body.

High blood pressure – also referred to as hypertension, a person with a

long-term blood pressure that is increased can affect the kidneys. If a

person already has a kidney problem, high blood pressure can further

aggravate the underlying disorder.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Diabetes – a person who has long-term diabetes may lead to failure of the

kidneys to function properly. It is said that strict control of blood sugar levels

can help in the reduction of producing any kind of complication.

The majority of diseases of the kidney don't usually produce symptoms until

it becomes serious. Below are some of the symptoms that one might

encounter which may warn an individual that he or she is acquiring the

disease:

- Difficulty urinating

- Burning sensation during urination

- Urine with blood

- Swelling of the hands and feet

- Puffiness of the eyes

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

- Pain that radiates from the back to the abdomen

- Increased pressure

Treatments for kidney diseases are made through various methods like

medications, medical interventions, and if it progresses, possible dialysis or

transplantation. Ask your physician about the specific treatment for your

condition because some may require long-term treatments while others may

be taken through dietary modification. Your physician may recommend

specific medications and suggest a diet that you should follow in order to

lessen or totally eliminate formation of kidney diseases.

What Causes Kidney Failure?

The Kidneys

Aside from filtering the blood of its waste products, the kidneys balance the

different levels of electrolytes, control blood pressure, and stimulate the

production of the body’s red blood cells. This is the normal function of a

person’s kidneys.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Kidney failure comes in when there is a problem with how the kidney

functions as a whole. Typically, there are two kinds of kidney failure: acute

and chronic. Both are differentiated with their causes and how long they can

affect a person.

Acute Kidney Failure

This is the abrupt loss of the kidney’s ability to perform elimination of excess

electrolytes and fluid including waste materials from the blood. As the

kidneys lose their ability to filter, the chances increase that levels of fluids,

wastes and electrolytes can reach dangerous levels.

This condition is common to those who are hospitalized needing intensive

care. Occurrence of acute kidney failure is due to a series of complicated

surgeries or if there is an incidence of severe injury or if there is an

interruption of blood flow in your kidneys. Once acute kidney failure happens

intensive medical treatment is required immediately otherwise it can lead to

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
a more complicated kidney disorder. Even so, this condition is reversible. If

a persons’ health is not compromised, his kidney can recover to its normal

function.

Causes of Acute Kidney Failure

There are numerous causes for the occurrence of acute kidney failure. These

causes are grouped in accordance with the function of the kidney that is

affected. The underlying causes are the following:

• Prerenal conditions – occurs when blood going into the kidneys is

disrupted. One of the causes is because of blood pressure that is extremely

low. If there is the presence of infection, dehydration or severe bleeding, it

can lead to a severe drop in blood pressure. An intense decrease in the level

of blood pressure prevents a sufficient amount of blood to reach the kidneys

thus depriving the organ of its needed blood supply. Traumatic injury follows

if this drop in blood pressure is not corrected.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

• Renal conditions – direct damage in the kidney structures. This

happens when the kidneys are severely compromised, strains of bacteria are

present inside of it, it is inflamed or if a toxic injury occurred.

• Postrenal conditions – excretion of urinary waste is blocked after

filtration. Obstruction of the ureters is the most common reason why there is

a postrenal condition. There might be traces of blood clots, tumors, and

nerve disorders predisposing the obstruction.

Chronic Kidney Failure

In chronic kidney failure, there is a gradual loss in the filtering function of the

kidneys which is usually due to chronic disorders like diabetes and high

blood pressure. When there is serious kidney impairment, levels of

dangerous fluid can accumulate quickly inside the body. Fluid accumulation

can lead to intoxication by waste materials that should’ve been excreted but

instead go with the circulation.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Within the early stages of chronic kidney failure, there are lesser signs and

symptoms. For this reason, there are few who are aware that they are

already entering a phase that may lead to an irreversible condition. Without

proper treatment, this condition can lead to a more serious end-stage kidney

disorder. End-stage kidney disorder can be fatal if artificial filtering is not

done.

Causes of Chronic Kidney Failure

• Diabetes – this is the leading cause of long-term kidney failure most

especially in the United States. Diabetes type one and type two are both

related to the chronic failure.

• Kidney diseases – when kidney diseases are not properly diagnosed

and treatment never given, it can lead to chronic kidney failure which

includes a series of kidney infections, inflammation, and clusters of cysts.

• Urine flow obstruction – if there is the presence of tumors, kidney

stones, sphincter reflux, and enlargement of the prostate gland, urine flow is

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

obstructed. Obstruction of urine flow can increase the pressure inside the

kidneys and may result to trauma, reducing the function of the kidneys.

What Are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones, also known as renal lithiasis, are hard, small deposits of salts

from acid and minerals found inside the surface of one’s kidneys. Substances

that make up the stones are normally diluted in the form of urine although,

when urine becomes concentrated, minerals have the tendency to

crystallize, mold together, and eventually solidify. This formation is then

called a kidney stone. The most common type of kidney stone is in the form

of calcium.

Passing kidney stones through the system can be excruciating. Pain starts at

either the back, side or just below the ribs then radiates to the lower

abdomen down to the groin. Even if there is serious pain, stones don’t cause

any permanent damage to the person experiencing the condition. However,

it may lead to a series of complications, which may cause further

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

aggravation if the stones are not removed. Aside from pain medication,

there are still several necessary medical processes that should be done.

One of the most important things when treating the condition is to know the

type of kidney stone that has progressed inside the kidneys. Effectively

knowing the cause will produce results in creating a more comprehensive

treatment regimen. This will also prevent the further formation of new

stones. In the absence of any kind of medical treatment, one of the most

effective ways in gradually eliminating the stones is to have increased water

intake. This will help flush out the stones by diluting them. Dietary

modification is also helpful in minimizing risks for kidney stones.

Causes of Kidney Stones

The formation of kidney stones is usually due to problems with absorption

and unbalanced acids and minerals inside the body. Urine has properties

that can form into crystals. These crystals in the urine are not directly diluted

by fluid for it is not sufficient enough or the mineral and acid content are

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

above the normal level. There are also times when urine lacks substances

that prevent the crystals from forming thus becoming stones. Kidney stones

also have the capability to be formed in an environment that’s highly alkaline

or acidic.

Problem with elimination or absorption of the substances that causes the

formation of the stones is typically the major factor in the progress of the

disorder. Inflammatory bowel disease and gout contribute in the promotion

of kidney stones. Drugs are also contributors for stones to occur.

It is, however, claimed that for kidney stones to build up, there should be at

least more than one cause.

The majority of the stones contain crystallized materials that are composed

of more than one type of acids and minerals. Determining the bulk formation

of the stone – which is usually made up of different compounds – will help in

identifying the cause. In order to effectively prevent build up, one must first

know the composition of the stone and what precipitates it.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Kinds of kidney stones:

1. Calcium – considered as the most common cause of kidney stones,

calcium usually forms as calcium oxalate. Calcium oxalate can be found in

some vegetables and fruits although the human liver has the capability to

produce the body’s supply of oxalate. Increased doses of calcium foods can

increase the chance of concentrating the oxalate in the urine.

2. Uric acid – a protein metabolism waste product, uric acid is more likely

to develop in people who have an increased intake of protein-rich foods.

Gout can also lead to the formation of uric acid. Genetic factors and some

disorders of tissues producing blood predispose the condition.

One of the major reasons why kidney stones occur is because of the lack of

fluid intake. If you are a person who doesn’t like drinking water daily, at least

6 to 8 glasses, yet eats a lot of foods causing stones, then you are a possible

candidate for kidney stone formation. If your body’s water content is low,

your urine becomes concentrated.

What Are the Symptoms of Kidney Stones?

What Are the Symptoms of Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones have numerous symptoms that can easily be detected. There

are at least less than 20 symptoms. These include:

• Severe abdominal pain

• Kidney pain

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Groin pain

• Blood in the urine

• Symptoms of kidney infection namely: fever, chills, vomiting, blood in

the urine, cloudy urine, burning sensation on urination, urgency on urination

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
The symptoms mentioned above are just some but are oftentimes

considered as minor confirmatory manifestations to detect the presence of

kidney stones. Generally, these symptoms go hand in hand with the

different types of kidney stones.

No manifestations of obvious symptoms

Here, the person may already have within his or her kidney small kidney

stones but are not yet felt and is not yet considered as a threat. This is

because the person can’t feel that there is a deviation from the normal

status. Even if there are no manifestations, there is still a high possibility

that a person is sick. There are various diseases wherein there are no early

warning signs exhibited. These conditions are termed as “silent killers”

because their symptoms will only show if the condition is already terminal or

at a stage wherein recovery is slim. Such diseases like diabetes, high blood

pressure, and cancers qualify. Luckily, kidney stones have early

manifestations that help medical practitioners and the patient realize that

there is something wrong.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Severe abdominal and kidney pain

An abdominal pain may mean a lot and not mainly focus on kidney stones. It

is best to be more specific. There are abdominal pains that propose a severe

threat to the life of the individual. If there is a sudden sharp pain felt at the

side, flank area and even at part of the groin, it is advisable to have a

medical checkup for these may be signs of kidney problem manifestations.

Sudden, severe abdominal pain is often regarded as a medical emergency.

Nausea

Mild as it seems, nausea must never be disregarded as a symptom. Nausea

is that feeling of queasiness which often precedes vomiting. But there are

circumstances that nausea may occur without vomiting and vice versa.

Nausea is a body reaction when it has detected an infection or an alteration

from the normal state of a person’s health.

Vomiting

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

This is the body’s way of emitting contents of the stomach from the mouth.

When a person vomits, the stomach contents are usually thrown up partly or

sometimes entirely. This poses a nutritional imbalance therefore needs

immediate medical intervention.

Groin Pain

The joint found between the upper leg and the hip is the groin. When there

is a radiating pain from the back going to the groin, then it might be a sign

that kidney stones are present within the urinary system.

Blood in the urine

Also referred to as “hematuria”, blood in the urine usually indicates

something severe. Bleeding within the urinary system may portray that

there is injury or trauma either at the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate

and parts of the urinary tract. Blood together with urine may come out as

orange-colored, smoky, or sometimes pinkish. Once seen in the urine, the

person should seek prompt medical checkup.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
Symptoms of Kidney Infection

Fever – a rise in the body’s temperature is a not a sickness but a way for the

body to fight certain infections present within the system. If a person’s fever

is no longer manageable by home remedies and simple fever medicines, it is

a must to bring him or her to a hospital for medical investigation. Shooting

body temperature may cause serious damage to the entire system and may

sometimes lead to convulsions.

Chills – related to fever, chills are caused by the body’s drop in temperature.

This is another way for the body to cope with the environment especially if

the person can no longer stand severe cold.

Urgency on urination – when a person feels certain urgency on urination

related to kidney stones, it would probably be the result that the stone is

already forming, adding to the normal capacity and volume of a the urinary

bladder which calls for urgent urination.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
What Causes Kidney Stones?

Causes of kidney stones

Renal calculi is the medical term given to kidney stones.

Kidney stones are caused mainly by the same things whether in adults or

children. When there is an increase of substances that precipitate the

formation of stones in the urine yet little amount of fluid to dilute it, kidney

stones are then formed. Calcium is the most common type of kidney stone

formed with either phosphate oxalate. Other compounds that make up

stones are uric acid and cystine – an amino acid.

Dehydration through strenuous exercise or reduced intake of fluid without

adequate replacement heightens the risk of producing kidney stones. An

obstruction of urine that flows out of the system can greatly affect the

formation. Infection that is present in the urinary tract can also be the cause

of the production of stones which is referred to as infection stones or

otherwise known as struvite.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
Who are prone?

Men are most likely prone to develop kidney stones. On the other hand,

whites are more susceptible than blacks. The incidence in men starts to rise

when they reach the age of 40 until they are in their 70s. People who have

experienced having more bouts of the condition are subject to developing

more stones. A family who has a history of kidney stones is also more likely

to progress in the development of more kidney stones.

Conditions that may lead to the development of kidney stones are:

• High levels of calcium – though inherited, it may also be due to

increased calcium intake and less fluid inside the body to wash it away. This

is in the form of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate. When this happens,

there will be traces of calcium in the urine when examined under the

microscope diagnosing the fact of the condition.

• Gout – if there are high levels of uric acid, gout occurs. This may also

lead in the formation of stones made up of residues of uric acid.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

• Other conditions which are associated: inflammatory bowel disease,

kidney diseases, high blood pressure or hypertension and diabetes.

• Medications raise the risk for the development of the condition.

Medications like antacids containing calcium, diuretics, and the like.

• Levels of struvite – this is more present in women than in men. Stones

from struvite are usually a result of urinary tract infections. Struvites, when

formed, are large enough to occupy the kidney’s space for collection.

• Cystine – these are the kind of stone that are present but only in small

amounts. Cystine stones usually form in persons who have some kind of

hereditary disorder which caused the kidneys to expel excessive percentage

of cystine within the system. Cystine is a kind of amino acid.

There is no single cause for having kidney stones. For every kidney stone

passed, there are at least several substances in order to maintain the

integrity of the stone. Therefore, calcium itself is not the only main

substance, which will be seen during examination, but it comes in

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

combinations. You may see uric acid salts, calcium salts and cystine in one

stone.

If a body has a problem eliminating or absorbing the chemicals, acids, and

minerals inside the kidneys, then he or she is pretty much susceptible to

have kidney stones.

In order to prevent kidney stones, the causes must be lessened. Preventive

measures fall under medical intervention and dietary or life-style changes.

Medical interventions will depend on what type of kidney stones that have

progressed. Lifestyle or dietary changes involve drinking lots of fluid,

typically an increase from the usual intake and limiting the cause of the

stones and alcohol.

Diet and Kidney Problems

What Foods Contribute to Kidney Problems?

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
Kidney problems occur because there is either an imbalance in the intake of

substances or the body no longer functions normally. But most likely, one of

the major causes of kidney problems is because of the food ingested.

Due to extravagant eating, people develop different kinds of disorders that

greatly affect the kidneys. If the kidneys can no longer filter and cleanse the

blood filled with different kinds of toxins, it is inevitable that the person may

have problems in the following years of his or her life.

Foods that contribute to kidney problems should be reduced. The following

are lists of foods considered as chief contributors in creating massive

damage to the kidneys.

Protein

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

There is a need for the body to have daily intake of protein, which is

important in the buildup of muscles, and for tissue repair. After using the

protein, waste products are formed. Typically, there is no need to lessen the

amount of protein one takes but if there are chances wherein the person is

already experiencing a problem with waste product excretion, protein has to

be minimized or at times, permanently removed from the person’s diet.

Reduction in the amount of urine when the kidney can no longer function

properly is essential to avoid any more build up of waste products.

One can get protein from numerous sources like poultry, seafood, milk,

meat, cheese, eggs and other dairy products. Whereas one can also get

protein in plant sources like cereals, grains, fruits and vegetables.

Phosphorus

This should be taken in minimal amounts the kidneys can’t sustain removing

high levels of phosphorus in the blood and excrete it in the form of urine. If

a person ingests too much phosphorus, it doesn’t only put the kidneys in

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

jeopardy but also the bones. If the blood contains high levels of phosphorus,

calcium may be depleted from your bones. A low level of calcium in bones

may result in weaker bones that may lead to simple fractures.

Because phosphorus has the tendency to strip off calcium from the bones, it

increases the calcium circulating with blood. When it reaches the kidneys,

high levels of calcium will deposit in them. If the kidneys fail to dilute the

calcium, it will crystallize and precipitate kidney stones.

Phosphorus can be found in products like ice cream, milk, pudding, beans,

nuts, soft drinks, beer and cocoa. In order to lessen the amount of

phosphorus in the diet, one can use milk substitutes and non-diary

creamers.

Sodium

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

If the sodium level in the blood is high, blood pressure increases thus raising

the chances of having a kidney disorder. Limiting the amount of food

containing sodium is best. Foods rich in sodium are canned goods, processed

foods, prepared foods, and foods served in fast food chains. Foods with

added table salt, pickles, ham, bacon, olives, and luncheon meat are also

potentially rich in sodium.

Calories

Calories are important in the production of energy in the body. Calories are

taken from a variety of sources. In the case of developing kidney problems,

a modification of where to get the calories will be advised by your dietitian.

Some of the calories can be taken from vegetable fats and sugar. Losing the

calories is not an excuse to also lose weight for malnutrition can lead to other

complications. Increasing calories can be taken from unsaturated fats, hard

candy and frozen fruits.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Diet is one thing that needs to be controlled. A strict diet for the sake of your

kidneys will control the excess buildup of numerous waste products that

enables the decrease in your kidneys workload. Restriction or minimizing

foods that contribute to kidney problems is the best strategy to keep your

kidneys healthy and free from any kind of anomalies which may develop.

What Causes Excess Uric Acid?

Uric acid is one component that flows with the blood but is simply excreted

in the urine. It passes in the liver then enters the bloodstream. It is normal

that uric acid passes through the different systems of the body with the

blood. Uric acid is a component of purine. When purine breaks down, uric

acids are formed. Purines contain nitrogen that either comes from the food

we eat or are made up by a person’s cells. If there is increased purine

consumption, it poses an increase in the accumulation of uric acid that may

be deposited in tissues down to the kidneys, forming crystals or stones.

Causes of Increased Uric Acid

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

A rise in a person’s uric acid is caused by different factors either external or

internal. There are also primary and secondary reasons why there is a high

level of uric acid in the blood. The primary reason would be because of an

increase in purine and the secondary reason would be because of a disease

that precipitates the rise. The body sometimes produces more uric acid than

the body can handle and is unable to excrete, thus it is deposited in various

parts of the body.

Primary Uric Acid Increase

A primary increase in uric acid is technically caused by an increase in the

production of uric acid coming from purine. For people who eat excessive

amounts of purine-rich foods, they are possible candidates for having high

uric acid in their blood. If the kidneys can no longer excrete uric acid from

the blood they are at risk.

Secondary Uric Acid Increase

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Cancers – there are cancer types that predispose a person to have an

increase in uric acid in the blood. Just with the presence of a specific cancer,

uric acid can already rise.

Chemotherapy - chemotherapeutic agents may have a degree of turnover

leading to cell death. After chemotherapy had been administered,

oftentimes, tumor and cellular destruction rapidly takes place. Syndrome for

tumor destruction may occur after receiving chemotherapy for certain

cancers like leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma.

Kidney diseases – having a specific kidney disease will predispose the kidney

to not work properly which may lead to poor blood filtering of uric acid even

if it comes in small amounts.

Medications – there are certain medications that alter the body’s kidney

system into filtering the blood from uric acid.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Metabolic and endocrine problems – conditions concerning the metabolic

and endocrine system such as forms of diabetes may cause an increase in

uric acid.

If an elevation of uric acid occurs, there are chances that it can produce

kidney problems like kidney stones but at times, produce none at all. People

can get through their lives having an increase in uric acid and yet don’t

develop signs of joint inflammation. About 20% of those who have an

elevated uric acid who will develop gout.

What to watch out for

If one already has increase in uric acid in the blood, they may or may not

experience any symptoms. If the levels are significantly elevated, there may

be manifestations detected; fever, fatigue, and chills are common. If there is

inflammation pain will be present. Problems urinating are also a typical sign

that uric acid is high.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
What to do

If you are already diagnosed with high uric acid, you can still do things that

can tone it down or prevent its levels from shooting up. Having a checkup is

the first thing to do. Follow the physician’s instructions. Usually, a low purine

diet is advised. Foods that have an increase in purine content namely organ

meats, alcoholic beverages, asparagus, beans, peas, mushrooms, spinach

and oatmeal should be lessened or even avoided.

If there are foods to avoid, there are also foods that can be eaten with the

regular diet due to low purine content. Such foods are:

• Breads, flour, cakes

• Eggs, milk products

• Green leafy vegetables

• Nuts

• Tomatoes

Kidney Disease and Diabetes

As we have ascertained, the kidneys act as the regulator of fluids and

electrolytes inside the body and are the organs that keep the body cleansed

of waste materials. If there are certain diseases that are affecting the body’s

normal flow, the kidney would react immediately, otherwise the balance

within the system is compromised.

Kidney Disease

There are numerous kidney problems that may occur although one of the

most feared is reaching end-stage kidney disease. This is a severe condition

wherein the kidneys are permanently damaged and can no longer meet the

function of eliminating waste products produced by the body. End-stage

kidney disease is the final stage of all kidney diseases which results in

gradual deterioration of the kidney. One of the main causes for end-stage

kidney failure is diabetes.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

About 50,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with end-stage

kidney disease every year and almost 40% of the people affected with

end-stage kidney disease are caused by diabetes.

Diabetes

Any of the types of diabetes can be the major leading cause of end-stage

kidney disease occurring at about one-third of the cases. Even if there are

diet and drugs to correct and control diabetes, the disease itself can lead to

kidney problems.

Diabetes is a condition wherein the body can no longer properly process

specific foods rich in glucose like carbohydrates. Normally, the human body

can convert carbohydrates into glucose. Glucose is the main source of the

body’s energy. In order for glucose to enter the cells, insulin (the hormone

that serves as a glucose transporter) is needed in equal amounts for glucose

to be used by the cells. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. If the pancreas

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
fails to produce enough amounts of insulin, a sufficient amount of glucose

will not be able to pass through the cells. If glucose is not used up by the

cells, it accumulates in the blood and merges with circulation. The moment

this occurs it then leads to a diagnosis of diabetes.

How the kidney becomes affected

The relationship of end-stage kidney disease and diabetes is largely

explained by the gradual deterioration which takes places at the glomeruli

(responsible for filtering blood). In the early stages of the disease, the

filtering efficiency and process diminishes. Here, important components in

the blood are lost through the urine. Medical practitioners measure how

much a person is affected through the level of protein in the urine. Then, as

the disease progresses, the kidneys dissipate the ability to remove waste

products of the body’s metabolism like urea from the blood. Symptoms of

the disease occur only in the late stages wherein the kidneys can no longer

function well. For people with diabetes, kidney diseases exist silently without

any warning.

Stages

The progression of end-stage kidney disease with people having diabetes is

concerned with five stages, respectively.

Stage 1 – Here, the kidneys are larger than normal size due to an increase in

the flow of blood particularly in the kidney’s glomeruli. Some people just

stay within this stage though others advance to stage II.

Stage 2 – Rate of filtration is still elevated or nearing to normal levels

although the glomeruli begin to show signs of trauma or damage. Little

amounts of protein tend to leak to the urine and traces will be seen on

diagnosis.

Stage 3 – An increased loss of other proteins in the urine up to 200 mcg/min.

Detection can be seen in urine examination. Here, affected people can have

high blood pressure and the glomeruli suffer an increased injury. The
Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
kidneys are progressively losing the ability to filter waste materials. For

diabetic patients, they remain to be in this stage for years.

Stage 4 – The filtration rate of the glomeruli depreciates and larger amounts

of protein pass to the urine. High blood pressure is adjoined with levels of

waste products of metabolism increasing to a further extent.

Stage 5 – Regarded as end-stage kidney disease, here the filtering drops to

nearly ten milliliters every minute and signs and symptoms of failure occur.

The progression until stage 5 will rapidly occur if there is the presence of an

untreated increase in blood pressure.

How to Dissolve Kidney Stones

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Human kidneys are just one of the main organs that are affected when there

is an abnormality occurring inside the body, most especially if it concerns

balancing fluids and electrolytes. From the many disorders the kidneys have

to suffer, it’s the kidney stones that make it bleed. Due to substances that

are not diluted by the urine, stones tend to accumulate in the kidneys and

parts of the urinary system. Kidney stones vary in size and components.

There is not a kidney stone that is composed of only one substance. If kidney

stones are not diluted or dissolved, there is an increased possibility of the

tubes where urine passes to be blocked.

We have already determined that there are four types of kidney stones

namely: calcium, uric acid, struvite and cystine. While calcium is the most

common, cystine is the least. Most of these substances can be found in the

food people eat. It is important that kidney stones are removed in the

urinary system because it poses damage when untreated.

There are natural ways to rid the system of kidney stones. One of the most

effective is to dissolve it. In dissolving kidney stones, hydration is the main

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

objective due to the fluid’s property to wash away, even gradually, the

stones from the kidneys and other parts of the system.

Hydration

The way to reduce the pain and presence of kidney stones is by drinking lots

of fluids especially water. This will effectively dissolve the stones even in the

absence of any medication. It is advisable to drink vegetable and fruit juices

like grapes, orange, and carrot.

As the stone moves, pain can be felt about 30 to 60 minutes and can take

months for the stone to be entirely washed out. There are also natural

methods using phosphoric acid but this requires further instructions.

Going on a diet

A moderate diet that contributes to low production of stone-forming

substances will help in effectively dissolving the stones for it will no longer

aggravate the buildup of any more stones. You have to go slow on the
Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
caffeine therefore avoid sodas, tea and coffee. There are, however, Chinese

herbs that can be prepared as tea which claim to help in dissolving kidney

stones.

Tea is the Key

Herbs like meadowsweet, plantain and sarsaparilla are natural medicines

that help in removing excessive uric acid from the blood. The Chinese make

tea out of these herbs in order to effectively dissolve the stones. Diuretic

teas are those that are made from corn silk and dandelion. This is also a

home remedy for kidney stones.

Wild Herb Cure

Goldenrod, a wild herb found by North Americans, is said to be very effective

in eliminating kidney stones.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Before trying one of these methods, it is best that your doctor knows about

the “dissolving agents” you are to ingest. Doctors, who don’t want their

clients to go through the excruciating tradition of purchasing expensive

medications, may suggest natural methods of decreasing the stones. Some

of these are increasing the fluid intake and diet modification. This is followed

in the absence of any kind of surgical intervention. Liver preparations must

be avoided in order to stop further stone formation or enlargement of a

pre-existing stone.

Flushing out a stone is similar with flushing out a pipe that’s clogged.

Drinking plenty of water within a day will help in effectively dissolving the

stones out of the kidneys. As the stones are flushed, a sharp pain will also be

experienced most especially if the stones are large enough to scrape the

walls of the organ it passes through.

Dissolving kidney stones is achieved by just having a drink of natural

remedies or even water. It is best that water is dissolved at an earlier stage

to avoid experiencing signs and symptoms that may make the person feel

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

uneasy and in pain. To be able to know if the stones are completely flushed

out, a date with the doctor should be made. Through a urine test, patterns

will show if there are still traces of crystallized materials because if there

aren’t any, then you have treated the disorder effectively.

Home Remedies for Kidney Stones

Contradictory to what some say, there are effective home remedies for

kidney stones which are easy to make or produce and are found in your

home. Kidney stones can affect anyone - young or old, male or female,

although men are more prone in suffering the condition than women. Men

are about four times vulnerable to get kidney stones for there are hormones

that females produce which prevent the formation of the stones.

Increase Fluid Intake

It can’t be reiterated enough. Drinking more than the usual is advisable if

you are in the early stages of developing kidney stones or even in the late

stages. This might be the only natural remedy that can fully help in flushing

out the stones even in a gradual manner. The minimum daily water

consumption should be at least eight glasses. While water is considered as

the best choice in dissolving kidney stones, beverages that are nonalcoholic

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

and free of caffeine can also count, although you might want to cut down on

drinking too much tea for it produces high concentrations of oxalates.

Lessen the Oxalates

Again, it is good to eat large quantities of vegetables and fruits for they

provide lots of minerals, vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial to overall

health. However, these foods tend to provide oxalates which means, you

must go easy to avoid having kidney stones. People who are prone to

forming stones made of calcium-oxalate are asked to cut back on foods

which have high oxalate contents like: chocolate, nuts, spinach, tea, and

coffee and wheat bran. But these foods are not completely avoided unless

advised by your doctor. These types of food are eaten in moderation in most

cases.

Go Low on the Cs

Vitamin C is regarded as a wonder vitamin for its beneficial effects on the

body. Too much intake of vitamin C can predispose a person to having

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com
kidney stones. Due to the body’s ability to convert vitamin C into oxalate,

the more reason to go less.

Cut down on the meat and fish

We have already established this so we won’t belabor it here. However,

remember that cutting down on foods like liver, beer, wine and kidney is

advisable to decrease the level of purine in the body.

Have regular exercise

Exercise has many benefits because it facilitates calcium passage into the

bones. This will result in a lesser risk of developing kidney stones and

making the bones stronger. Exercise can also improve the circulation of

blood into the system.

Bread – whole-wheat

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Eating a couple of whole-wheat bread slices will give you good amounts of

magnesium, a mineral that is helpful in averting the stones from occurring.

Carrots

For one to achieve healthy kidneys vitamin A must be taken and one good

source is carrots. Carrots are rich in Vitamin A as are potatoes, winter

squash, pumpkin and broccoli.

Milk

This is an ironic inclusion in your home remedies mainly because milk is a

good source of calcium wherein calcium is a major component for kidney

stones to occur. Although studies show that not drinking milk imposes more

chances of an actual increase in getting kidney stones. An explanation would

be: when there is a low calcium level, the body tends to produce more

oxalate that increases the risk for developing kidney stones.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Vitamin B6

According to experts, vitamin B6 is said to be effective in lowering the level

of oxalate which goes with the circulation. Doctors may suggest a daily

intake of vitamin B6 together with magnesium.

For kidney stones to be washed away effectively, it should be promptly taken

care of otherwise it may cause serious pain. Through the recommended

remedies, there are better chances of taking care of your heath and prevent

the stones from recurring.

Kidney Stones in Children

Kidney stones are not choosy. This is a disorder that affects both young and

old. Affectation demonstrates different signs and symptoms. The

manifestation of typical signs and symptoms are the same whether it’s in

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

children or in adults. Although the difference of kidney stones depends on

how one effectively recognizes if the child is experiencing the disorder.

Therefore it is important that one knows the twists and turns of kidney

stones.

Risk Factors in Children

There are certain factors that can increase the chances of a child in

developing kidney stones. Some of these are:

• Genetic Factor - If your family has a history of having kidney stones,

then your children have higher chances of experiencing one too. It runs from

generation to generation. Therefore it is important to be aware of such

medical histories in order for early prevention to take place.

• Personal History – if the child already had a session with kidney stones

and was treated, there is a high chance that he or she can develop the

stones in due time. With this, the best way to prevent it from recurrence is to

limit or lessen the cause.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

• Decreased Intake of Fluid – The amount a child drinks is directly

proportional to how the disorder can affect him or her. If the child is not fond

of drinking water, then the fluid to produce urine is less which increases the

level of concentration of the substances which then forms the stones within

the urine. With increased fluid intake, there is a reduction in the stone

occurring.

• High animal protein diet – For children who are into food that has a

high level of animal protein, they have greater risk of developing calcium

stones. It is further aggravated by decreased intestinal absorption.

• Cystic fibrosis – children who have cystic fibrosis (an inherited disease

of the sweat glands and mucus membrane) is also at risk in having kidney

stones.

• Medications – there are certain drugs that can directly affect formation

of stones in children. These medications can precipitate in the formation of

crystals in the urine.

• Abnormalities in the urinary tract – if there are abnormalities,

anatomically, with how the kidneys, ureters and bladder are structured,

difficulties regarding emptying may be the cause of developing the stones.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Treatment

Management for small stones can be done at home provided the pain is

minimal and can be tolerated by the child and if the child is healthy enough

otherwise hospitalization is required. If the stones are not bigger than 0.2

inches or five millimeters, it can pass naturally without requiring any kind of

procedure and medication even in younger children. Reasons for

hospitalization may be due to an obstruction that prevents urine to flow and

if the pain is not well tolerated by the child and by any kind of pain

medication. Obstructions must be treated immediately to avoid any kind of

permanent damage.

About Dialysis

Definition

Dialysis is a medical intervention done through the process of getting rid of

toxic substances like waste products or impurities from the blood in cases

when the kidneys are no longer doing its function. Dialysis is frequently done

for people who are experiencing kidney failure. This can also be used to

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

hasten the removal of poisonous chemicals or drugs when faced with acute

situations. This is a vital technique and can be life saving especially for

people who already have chronic kidney diseases.

Performing Dialysis

Typically, there are two methods for performing dialysis – peritoneal and

hemodialysis.

Peritoneal Dialysis

By using the body’s peritoneum (space in the abdomen), peritoneal dialysis

is done by infusing a solution inside the semi-permeable membrane to be

able to remove toxins, letting it remain for quite some time and then

eventually drained. This type of dialysis can be performed even at home and

is done every day.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis or dialysis of the blood works by filtering the blood through a

specialized filter outside the body. The blood will then flow through the

membrane which is also semi-permeable together with solutions that also

help in removing excess fluid and toxins.

A blood flow of about 500 milliliters is needed per minute. A special way of

accessing blood to work through the blood vessels is done because a normal

intravenous tube in the leg or arm does not have the capacity to support

blood flow volume.

Access can be permanent or temporary depending on the case of the

patient. If the access is temporary, dialysis catheters are used. These

catheters are large-sized which are placed in veins large enough to support

blood flow. Catheters are mostly used during emergencies but for short

periods only for catheters are also transporters of infection if used for long

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

hours; although, there are catheters that can be used for weeks and

sometimes, even months.

Hemodialysis having permanent access is made by joining a vein to an

artery through the process of surgery. This will then allow the vein to receive

a sufficient amount of blood at a high pressure which leads to thickening of

the walls. This vein can now sustain repeated punctures, which then

provides smooth flow of blood. Connection between the artery and vein is

made through the use of blood vessels or a synthetic branch.

Blood will be diverted from the point of access to the body of the patient to

the dialysis machine. In this process, the blood tends to flow in a

counter-current using a special solution termed as a dialysate. The

impurities and chemical imbalances composed in the blood are corrected.

After “cleansing” the blood, it is returned to the body. Hemodialysis is done

at least three times a week which lasts for about three to four hours.

Before Dialysis

Before undergoing dialysis, the person must first prepare for the test.

Adhering to the conditions like prescribed medicines and diet is important so

as not to delay or bring problems when dialysis day comes. Assessments are

made before the procedure; some of the physical assessments involve

checking the blood pressure, heart rate, breathing pattern and rate,

temperature, weight and venous access examination. The procedure can

continue only if the assessment is normal otherwise if there are some

discrepancies, it will have to be delayed.

Why Dialysis is performed

Dialysis is an integral procedure that removes certain contaminants in the

blood which could lead to certain ailments and sometimes death. Removal of

toxins and waste materials can no longer occur if the kidneys are not

functioning properly. The kidneys are considered the filtering organ of the

body. The kidneys separates the good blood from the bad blood. Good blood

meaning clean blood appropriate for circulation and bad blood containing

waste materials to be imbedded in the urine for excretion.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Without regulating the body fluid, ensuring normal blood pH (power

hydrogen), maintaining electrolyte balance, and excreting waste products,

there is a thin possibility that the body will survive. Dialysis is an effective

replacement for kidney functions. It can maintain life and ensure that it goes

on.

Kidney Transplantation

When a doctor makes a diagnosis that results in the kidney longer

functioning normally, aside from dialysis, kidney transplantation becomes

an option. Usually a diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease will lead to kidney

transplant due to the kidney’s incapacity to rid of waste products.

Though kidney transplants are options that require critical thinking, it will

still depend on how severe the condition has progressed. Eligibility has its

pros and cons. A potential candidate doesn’t necessarily mean a hundred

percent guarantee of going through the procedure at once if at all. There are

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

still assessments and evaluations that are needed in order to consider the

procedure.

The process of kidney transplantation is through the surgical replacement of

unhealthy kidneys with healthy ones. If only one of the person’s kidneys are

no longer working, transplant is not an option for it is given that a person can

live with only one kidney for as long as it can process properly. If both

kidneys are already threatened, it’s time for replacement to come in.

Kidney transplant is a surgical operation. The surgeon performs the

procedure by placing the “new” kidney inside the patient’s abdomen. He

then attaches the donated kidney to an artery supplying blood to one kidney

and to a vein that carries blood from the kidney. The new kidney is then

attached to the ureters that carry urine to the bladder. Unless there are

problems or infection is present, the non-functioning kidneys are not

removed.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Kidney transplantation requires full medical attention. The 24-hour period

after transplant is the most critical. After the procedure, a series of

assessments will be made until the medical team is positive that the kidneys

are working properly and complications will not exist.

The primary concern of the medical team is insuring that the body is not

rejecting the new kidney.

Eligibility for transplant

Before the doctor agrees on doing the transplant, the patient will undergo

detailed evaluation based on weeks or months worth of preparation with

tests and examinations. The basic purpose of thorough evaluation is to

determine whether the patient will benefit from the transplant and can

handle the surgery.

A series of questions will be asked by the medical team to ensure that kidney

transplant is possible. Questions regarding surgical and medical histories,

lifestyle and habits will be asked over and over again. This is not aimed to

annoy the patient but to make sure that the person is well prepared for the

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

procedure in order to exclude any possibility of organ rejection. The person

is also required to be prepared spiritually and mentally.

Conditions that may increase chances of kidney rejection and causes your

ineligibility for transplant are:

• HIV infection

• Hepatitis

• Cancer

• Severe infection

• Lung or heart disease

The donors, on the other hand, are also evaluated so as to make sure that

they are in good condition to donate the kidney. If it is determined that the

donor is unfit to undergo the surgical transplant, then the surgeon will have

to make certain arrangements so as not to put the donor’s life in danger.

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

Post-Op

The first week after kidney transplant is considered as a grace period to

check whether the body is reacting positively to the newly implanted

kidneys. This is the period wherein medical practitioners assess the patient’s

body for any kind of manifestations of rejection. If kidney rejection happens,

it’s either corrected with medications or the person has to undergo another

surgery.

Important factors to remember is that the majority of recipients are

expected to manifest problems adjusting with the new organ. In the initial

stage after the transplantation, certain treatments are made such as drug

prescriptions to prevent the occurrence of rejection will be given. This is

normal procedure to assure that the patient goes home with a properly

working kidney.

About 90% of kidney transplantations are successful. The idea of a person

suffering from rejection is quite disturbing but should not pose any kind of

Copyright 2018 –www.enhancelogy.com

alarm on the part of the patient. The majority of rejection cases are well

reversed while some are efficiently corrected.
