Electric Field Hockey and Electric Charge calculation questions

1. Draw a positive charge with field lines:
Ok, the positive charge repels the standard charge.

2. Draw a negative charge with field lines:

Ok, the negative charge is attracting the standard charge.

3. Is a standard charge positive or negative? Why?

The standard charge is positive because it is repelled by the positive charge and
attracted by the negative charge. Which means the standard charge is positive.

4. What did you discover playing the electric field hockey games? How do charges interact?
What worked or didn’t work?
Well what worked is that you can repel it to the goal or then attract it to the goal, both
worked. Also when 2 or more negative charges are near each other and near the standard
charge, then the standard charge circulates the negative charges. Sometimes after circulating

too long it is thrown off the screen. Also the positive would repel the standard charge off the
screen sometimes. The positive charges directed the standard charge into many directions.

5. What is the equation for calculating the electromagnetic field force (Coulomb’s Law)?
F=k(q1)(q2)/d^2

6. Show a calculation proving the force equation above works using the numbers from the
simulation (hint: k = 8.99 x 10^9 Nm^2/C^2)

F= (8.99 x 10^9 Nm^2/C^2)(50 x 10^-6 C)(600 x 10^-6 C)/4m^2= 16.856 N

But on the stimulation I got 17.8 N

7. Draw a positive and a negative charge near each other with field lines (like in a magnet):

Ok, the positive charge is attracted to the negative charge.

8. What would happen if you moved a wire parallel past a strong positive and negative charge
near each other (a magnet)?

The wire will most likely conduct some of the transfer between them and the would stick
together. It will make the negative charges attracted to the positive.
