In Data Analytics Engineering, there are many different fields (e.g.

, Computer

Science, Apply Information Technology, and Statistic) combined in this major. Since I

finished my undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Big Data training courses

in Institute for Information Industry, I have been interested in the discipline of Data

Mining, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. Also, I searched the courses I

will join and who the instructors are in those courses. For this reason, I found a

professor whose department is Computer Science and research is about Data Mining

and Machine Learning (Barbará, Daniel Barbará Resume, n.d.). There are three parts

(i.e., introduction, publications, and experience) to illustrate who the professor I have

chosen is and what his achievement has affected my thinking and feeling.

 Professor Introduction

The professor’s name is Daniel Barbará whose Ph.D. and Master of

Software Engineering (M.S.E.) completed in Computer Science, Princeton

University. I am so shocked after I surveyed his resume because Princeton

University’s ranking in the 2018 edition of Best Colleges is National

Universities, 1 (U.S. News & World Report L.P, n.d.) now. Also, according to the

website Dr. Daniel (Daniel Barbará Resume, n.d.) created, he has more than 20

years teaching experience. Thus, I believe his professional field in Computer

Science and teaching method that will help me study in the future. I might meet

him by taking the CS 657 course next year.

 Professor’s Publications

According to the professor’s (Barbará, Daniel Barbará's Publications, n.d.)

website, the professor published his refereed journal papers in more than 15

journals (e.g., Journal of the ACM, IEEE Transactions on Computers, SIGKDD

Explorations, etc.) between 1985 to 2003. I found those journals are related to

Computer Science although all look different. Furthermore, I discovered those

 journals whose publishers are authoritative organizations (e.g., ACM, IEEE). It

shows Dr. Daniel’s success and that he devotes more time to study Data,

Database, etc.

After analyzing whole articles Dr. Daniel wrote, I got two sections of the

result:

1. Before 2000

He focuses on how to optimize the efficiency in a database with

different situations like voting, mobile computing, etc.

2. After 2000

Because Big Data technique is rising, he focuses on how to

classify data sets and combine to previous research.

In conclusion, his research interests are about advanced database, data

optimization, and Big Data technique. I also interested in this since my

undergraduate project is about health care system and data visualization.

Moreover, my plan in Big Data training courses is to find the endangered species

in the world, and I use the skill of database and data mining to finish this.

However, I think my knowledge of this field is not enough. Therefore, I want to

learn more from this professor instruction.

 Professor Experience

First, I want to talk about his professional service. According to his

(Barbará, n.d.) resume, he has refereed for authorizing organization (e.g., IEEE,

ACM, Distributed Computing, Nation Science Foundation, etc.), and has joined

more than ten members of the program committee besides. I think he is a

authority in this discipline and he is active in those committees. On the other

hand, if I want to find other academic research about Big Data, I might get help

from this professor who asks other professors for more information.
 Second, the professor publications (Barbará, n.d.) show 63 refereed

conference proceedings he has. I think he is a significant researcher in this field

so that he has two or more workshops each year. Also, those workshops are held

around the world, not only in the U.S. It means the professor has kept

communicating with same field professional and update the information about

Computer Science technique.

In conclusion, I think following Dr. Daniel’s research is a good chance for

me. Although his website has not updated after 2003, he has plenty of

publications, patents, professional service. Also, I have the same interests which

include Data Mining and advanced Database with him. Hence, after finishing

pathway courses, I will choose the discipline of Data Mining if no other factors

affect my decision.
