Abstract. This work concerns Spanish cinematic output during the years of the
Transition (1975-1982). In this time, hitherto taboo subjects such as (homo)
sexuality, divorce or the questioning of the truth faith were daringly addressed
using, for convenience or calculated provocation, clear biblical references.
Horror, comedy and drama took advantage of recently granted liberties to bring
to attention all that the rigid Catholic morality and the no less intransigent
censorship of the Franco regime had silenced for decades. These were
productions in which humour and impudence were prevalent, made in the image
of the stammering and effervescent young democracy, and which contributed to
the gradual acceptance of new social models.

Abstract. The films of Pedro Almodóvar are replete with religious rituals and
myths which have very specific and repeated characteristics. Their presence is
not coincidental; rather they are signs and give meaning to the action. They may
be in the background of the story, in the external behavior and situation of the
characters or in the aesthetic of the set, as in the case of his personal altars or
collages, which combine religious and pagan references and juxtapose images
of the Virgin Mary and the Saints with famous movie sex symbols. All of this is
examined in this paper, focusing on the analysis of certain films which provide
the key to Almodovar’s religiosity, such as Dark Habits (1983), What Have I
Done to Deserve This (1984), Law of desire (1986), Women on the Verge of a
Nervous Breakdown (1987), Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down! (1989), Kika (1993), The
Flower of My Secret (1995), Bad Education (2004), ¡I’m so excited! (2013).

juventud. El milagro, en cualquier caso, llega.
Abstract. At the dawn of the new century, a good number of Christian traditions
have been preserved in festivals of religious content, which have nevertheless lost
their spiritual meaning. Instead they form a part of the folklore of modern secular
states, maintaining through societal inertia a series of customs and usages that
reproduce social traditions. The holiday of August 15, feast of the Assumption, is
an important festival for all Christians, Dormition of the Virgin, for the Orthodox.
However, in the Athens of the twenty-first century it has also become the key
holiday moment, at which point the population flees the megalopolis, looking for
the miracle that will help them to escape their undesired reality. This is what the
Greek film Decapendáfgusto (2010) proposes: three families in crisis leave the
building where they live in the center of Athens for different reasons, as does a
juvenile delinquent who squats there, looking for salvation, in spite of his youth.
In one way or another, the miracle arrives.

Abstract. This film, shot in Israel for North American television, represents an
original approach to biblical texts from a realist point of view, with elements
adopted directly from the ancient Greek tragedies. In the film, its director, the
Greek-Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis, represents extremely important issues, such
as divine election, the sense of suffering and the importance of reconciliation,
offering a serious reflection on their relevance today. Pioneering in its field, The
Story of Jacob and Joseph became the model for many subsequent television
series based on biblical texts, its influence felt even today.

Abstract. The social and cultural transformations occurred since the second
quarter of the twentieth century had profound consequences on Catholic Church.
If, on the one hand, the secularization process has forced the dislocation and
reorganization of the religious factor in society – through which the world is no
longer seen as an enemy to condemn and becomes perceived as a dialogue partner
and as an end of evangelization itself –; on the other hand, mass media’s rapid
expansion has opened new possibilities but also new challenges for the Church
to spread the Gospel. In this context, Cinema acquires particular significance
in the development of a right public opinion, as a tool at the service of human
progress and as an element to preach the Kingdom of God proposing a New
Humanity. Succinctly, Cinema becomes an epilogue of the New Evangelization.

Abstract. The aim of this work is to analyse the role of religion in a sacralised
discourse, the way in which its texts are constructed, the characteristics of its
language, as well as the way in which a sacralised identity is defined.
Given that the filmic text is an adaptation of a literary classic we have established
a comparison between both works, analysing the relation between religion and
power, between religion and daily life, the use of religion in the construction
of cultural fear, the construction of characters defined by their hierarchical
dependencies, and particularly, a construction of the feminine characterised as a
metaphor for a double hierarchization.
As the text operates on a cultural borderline and has a particular significance
due to the function it carries out between the end of the medieval narration
and the beginning of the modern tale we have also analysed the way in which
the singularisation of the figure of the author is constructed in the film, the
construction of the narrator, the significance of the gaze in the construction of
the tale of the new reality and the individual characterisation of the characters.

Abstract. Based on a true story, Camino tells the story of an eleven year old
girl who has to face two important events in her life: falling in love and death.
This is the plot that Javier Fesser, the director, uses to analyse one of the most
powerful religious organizations within Christianity: Opus Dei. As a result, the
film combines fantastical scenes with hard reality to show us the universe of a
girl who clings strongly to life and love.

1969), y Roberto Rossellini (Agostino d´Ippona, 1972).
Abstract. Religious sects have inspired many movies. So called demonic cults,
for reasons of space, fall outside the scope of this work, which is based on a
thorough review of the Ancient World sects and their reflection on the screen,
especially in the films of Alejandro Amenábar (Ágora, 2009), Luis Buñuel (Simon
del desierto, 1964 and La Voie Lactée, 1969), and Roberto Rossellini (Agostino
d´Ippona, 1972). There is also a section devoted to Biblical sects and another to
sects and horror films. Newly created sects and their ambivalent relationship to
cinema is a further object of study.

Abstract. Cinema has often shown the way in which many religions interact
with their cultural environments from different perspectives. It has sometimes
propagated popular legends and urban myths, giving rise to a cinematographic
mythology that may become confused with reality. Even today there are people
who assert that Rock (Heavy metal in particular) is the Devil’s music, and cinema
has something to do with this. However, Satanism as an authentic religion does
not share this view of music and the celluloid “satanic heavies” are usually
merely an attraction for the younger and less religious members of the audience,
and ultimately, just another part of the show.

Abstract. Marjane is a nine-year-old girl who lives in the Iran of the 1970s, a
time when the ideals that would give rise to the so-called Islamic Revolution
were being developed. After the Islamic Revolution breaks out, Marjane’s
parents decide to send their daughter, now a teenager, to study at the French
Lycée in Vienna so that she can attain the freedom that they so longed for with
the fall of the Shah, a freedom that would unfortunately never come.

responde a intereses políticos y principalmente económicos.
Abstract. To a great extent, ideas about Islam are shaped by the ideological
construction carried out by North American cinema, which responds to political
and, in particular, economic interests. This work denounces the demonization
of the Arab-Islamic world, using as a point of departure the work of Jack
Shaheen: Reel Bad Arabs, How Hollywood Vilifies a People; a book on which
the documentary of the same name is based. It attempts, however, to go beyond
this demonization, through an analysis of other movies from North America,
Europe and Asia that offer an alternative image of Islam. This ranges from the
most extreme conservatism to the proposed revision of its prescripts in order to
adapt them to modern times. Perhaps the unusual phenomenon of Taqwacore or
Islamic punk responds to this renovating image. On the other hand, the victory
of Islamism that followed the hope inspired by the Arab revolutions in Egypt and
Tunisia is read in the article as a late consequence of the image of Islam offered
by Hollywood.

Abstract. The Coen brothers have directed and produced many films since
beginning their career with Blood Simple (1984). Their films are usually black
comedies that tend toward parody. Many secondary characters in these films are
Jews, but up to now the only movie they have dedicated to their Jewish heritage
has been A Serious Man, in which they returned to their childhood years in St.
Louis Park (Minnesota) with the story of Larry Gopnik, a math teacher whose
world suddenly collapses. Larry does not understand why this succession of
misfortunes happens to him, and finds no satisfactory answer. The only answer
to the silence of God is humor. Humor is the main theme of the brief Hasidic
story with which the film begins. In this paper, the work of the Coen Brothers has
provided the departure point for certain observations on the relationship between
Judaism and Cinema, the image of the Jew in movies and the characteristics of
Jewish cinema.
