This workflow demonstrates FreeForms versatility as a design tool and the ease with
which existing design elements can be recycled to create new products. In this case I will
create a basketball team commemorative souvenir set.

The first element of the set to be created is a relief plaque signifying the team and its
achievement. The basis for this first element is a 2D drawing which I have imported to a
sketch plane in FreeForm as shown below.

I trace the contours of the base of the plaque and use the Wire Cut Tool to add clay inside
the sketch curves. I incorporate the use of Draft into creating of the piece to add a sense
of depth to the plaque.

I use the Sketch tools to delineate the background image of the basketball and select the
clay of the base with the boundaries of these curves.

I copy the selected clay (shown in previous image) and paste it as a New Piece (shown
below as the clay colored piece). Next I mirror the clay along its central axis and
reposition its origin at the center of the new object. I reposition the piece to pull it out a
bit from the base model to add depth to the relief of the basketball.

Next I use the imported 2D drawing again and trace the contours of the figures and ball
(shown below) and repeat the above process of selecting, copying, creating a new piece,
and repositioning. I do not mirror the new piece as it is asymmetrical and must be
modeled manually.

I use the same technique of extracting a new piece from the base clay model to create an
area for custom inscribed text on the plaque (shown below).

Having all of the design elements in place, it’s time to begin modeling the details.

I begin by adding detail to the figures themselves directly by using the carve, smooth, and
smudge tools.

I add further detail to the figures by tugging the clay inside 3D curves that I drew by
following the detail of the original drawing. (Shown below)

I use the emboss tool to add detail to the basketball.

I add further detail as shown in the following images:

After I am satisfied with the figures, I activate the background basketball and use Emboss
with Image (Shown below) to add texture to the ball, adding variety and interest to its
surface.

I add detail to the inscription plate by embossing a black and white image with the
desired lettering as shown below.

I continue to add any desired embellishments such as decorative rivets at the corners of
the plaque and incised fluting to the perimeter of the plaque to give it a more formal look.

The second element in the themed set is a desktop picture frame and pencil holder.
First I draw a series of rectangles on a new plane to create the base of the frame.

I add clay between the profiles in succession to create a frame with molded trim and
create an additional rectangular block of clay at the top of the frame. This block will
serve as a decorative scoreboard crowning the frame.

I sketch out design accents such as text on the scoreboard and an “MVP” inscription on
the same sketch plane used to create the frame.

I emboss the letters on the scoreboard using the Wire Cut tool.

I also use Wire Cut to add decorative banners to the sides.

Next I move on to the peripheral design elements and create them via simple geometric
shapes.

I add texture to certain decorative elements by using the mask feature, shown below.

I continue to refine the respective elements as shown below.

Next I import the pieces of the figures and background ball as a single clay file and scale
them to fit the surface of the pencil holder.

I reposition the origin of the piece to its center and move the piece to intersect the cup
shaped pencil holder.

I use the Deform Clay tool to wrap to the relief object to the surface of the pencil holder.

I combine the piece of the pencil holder and the newly place relief and save them out as a
separate file. This element can be modified further to create a third object for the set, a
coffee cup.

I simply add a handle to the cylindrical object to create a starting point for the cup’s
handle.

I import the decorative basketball created for the frame and scale and place accordingly
as shown above.

I use the Pipe Tool to round out the handle and add a lip to the cup (shown below) and
the object is finished.

Having completed all three objects, I add any final details, such as a base to the frame to
add functional stability and echo the formality introduced to the edge of the plaque earlier
in this workflow.
