Classroom Management Plan

InTASC Three: Learning Environments

General Procedures:

 Student entering/exiting the classroom

o When students enter into the classroom they should turn in any assignments that

are being collected in the appropriate bin. After turning in assignments, students

should pull out their writing journals and begin to work on their warm-up. If

students must leave the room for any reason and do not think they will be back

before the bell rings should ask the teacher for a pass.

o Students are only allowed to leave the classroom with the appropriate pass or if

the bell rings.

 Distribution of materials

o Located in the classroom will be a rotating responsibility chart. The chart will

assign different roles to various students. Students who are assigned to assist the

teacher with handouts will be responsible for making sure every student present in

class receives the proper materials. The teacher will always ensure that all

students have the proper materials before continuing with the lesson.

 Storing of students’ personal items

o Students are responsible for all belongings they bring into the classroom. The

teacher will never confiscate an item, unless it is deemed harmful to the student

and/or others in the classroom. Materials that are used in the classroom
2

consistently, such as warm-up journals, will be locked away and only the teacher

will be able to access those belongings.

 Students going to the rest room/drinking fountain

o Students who wish to leave the classroom to use the restroom or go to the water

fountain will have to follow the classroom protocol. The protocol requires for

students to sign-in and sign-out using the printed template located in the binder

that is placed below the restroom and water fountain passes. If the pass is not

present, students must wait to leave the room until a classmate returns with the

pass. Unless it is an emergency, students are not allowed to leave the classroom

during the first five or last five minutes of class.

 Classroom interruptions (announcements, intercom calls)

o During any announcement students should immediately become silent so that the

teacher may stay informed of what is happening. If the teacher is called for over

the intercom only the teacher should respond. If the teacher is not present in the

room, there will be one designated student who is responsible for letting the

teacher know they were called for over the intercom. This same student will

communicate that the teacher has briefly left the classroom, and will return

momentarily.

 Student tardiness to class

o Students who are late for class without a validate reason (or note from another

teacher, administrator, etc.) risk receiving penalties in the following areas:

participation, warm-ups, and/or homework. Meaning, no extra time will be

allotted for the student to complete their warm-up or turn-in homework that was
3

collected from the bin at the beginning of the period. Whether or not the student

receives points for homework completion will be left up to the discretion of the

teacher. Students who are consistently tardy will have a meeting with the teacher

and parents may be informed.

 Student dismissal from class

o Prior to the end of the class period students will be given five minutes to pack up

their belongings and hand in any assignments that are being collected by the

teacher. Students are not allowed to leave the classroom until the bell has rung or

the teacher has written them a pass. If a student is called for early dismissal, the

teacher will write the student a pass.

 Food/drink in the classroom

o Students will abide by the protocol listed in the student handbook. If no protocol

exists, students are allowed to eat SNACKS in the classroom (as long as it does

not prove to be a distraction to others). Students may lose this privilege if they fail

to clean-up crumbs, wrappers, etc. from their area. Students who pass around

drinks are at risk of losing their privilege to bring drinks into the classroom.

 Forgotten materials (pen, paper, notebook, etc.)

o The teacher keeps extra notebook paper and pencils in the classroom. Students are

welcomed to help themselves to supplies as needed. If a student has their own

supplies, but has left it in their locker they will need to notify the teacher in order

to receive a hall pass. Students will not be permitted to continually return to their

lockers, so the teacher may not allow students to leave the classroom after the first

few insistences.
4

 Sharpening pencils, throwing away trash etc.

o Students are aloud to use the pencil sharper on the teacher’s desk during

appropriate times. Meaning, if we are having a class discussion or the teacher is

speaking, students should not use the pencil sharper. Instead, they should trade

their pencil in for a sharpened pencil located next to the pencil sharpener.

o Students may throw trash away at any time; however, if they are distracting

students, the teacher will speak with them privately.

Academic Expectations:

 Turning in homework

o At the beginning of each class, students will turn-in completed homework

assignments in their designated classroom bin. The teacher will remind students

during the warm-up period to place completed homework in the appropriate bin.

If students fail to turn in their assignments prior to leaving the classroom, their

homework assignments will receive a penalty that is pre-determined by the

teacher. Homework that is being graded for completion needs to be placed on the

students’ desk once they enter the classroom, so the teacher may check students’

work during the warm-up period.

 Late or missed work

o Students will have the opportunity to turn in late work (besides assignments

graded for completion) if they fail to meet the original due date. All late

assignments must be turned in on the date of the summative assessment, and will

receive a penalty that is pre-determined by the teacher. No work will be accepted

5

following the summative assessment unless the student can provide the teacher

with a compelling reason (and possibly documentation).

o When students are absent, they will have the number of days they were absent to

submit all missed assignments. If more time is needed, students must schedule a

meeting with the teacher to create a plan for when assignments will be turned in.

If a student fails to meet with the teacher and receive more time on missed

assignments, then they will face the same late work penalty described above.

 Participation in classroom discussions

o Participation in classroom discussions will not be graded unless students are

informed in advance. All students should be prepared for class discussions, and

note that the teacher may call on them without them raising their hands. The

atmosphere for the discussion will be discussed ahead of time. Typically, in order

to keep the flow of ideas, the teacher will allow for students to respectfully call

out their ideas.

 Extra help

o All students will be provided with the teacher’s email and be informed that they

may email her when if extra help is needed. Students should not expect an

immediate response, but the teacher will try to respond within 24 hours. Also, the

teacher will have specific days in which she stays after school for an allotted

amount of time. Students will be notified in the beginning of the school year what

days and for how long the teacher will remain after school. The teacher will try to

inform students of any changes to her schedule.

 Lack of student success (low or failing grades)

6

o Students who receive a low or failing grade on an assignment will receive a note

(most likely written on the assignment) to speak with the teacher either after class

or afterschool. The teacher will work with the student to attempt to understand the

reasons behind the low or failing grade, and to see if the student needs extra

assistance. The student will only be able to revise work, tests, etc. for a better

grade if the teacher allows for the entire class to have the same opportunity. Also,

the teacher will monitor student progress throughout the quarter, and schedule

conferences with student and/or parent(s) when deemed necessary.

Student Behavior:

 Minor disruptions (talking/calling out)

o In order to allow for the flow of ideas to lead class discussions, students will not

be penalized for calling out. However, students who fail to show their classmates

and the teacher respect will receive point deductions from their participation

grade. The student will be warned one time about disrespectful behavior prior to

point deductions.

o If a student’s talking proves to be a distraction to the teacher and others in the

classroom, the teacher will address that student privately. If the talking continues,

the student will lose participation points for that class period.

 Conflicts with classmates

o The teacher will attempt to mediate conflicts that arise with classmates. If the

teacher believes the students need to seek another resource, she will contact the

appropriate staff member.

 Expectations (rules) for student behavior—list no more than five

7

o Rule 1: Students will always speak to the teacher and their classmates in a

respectful manner.

o Rule 2: Students will assist their classmates to ensure they are all destined for

academic success within our classroom.

Teacher Behavior:

 What teacher behaviors will you pay attention to in planning and delivering your lessons

in order to limit student behavior issues?

o When planning and delivering my lessons, I will think about how much free time

each class needs before they begin to get off task. I will also make sure that I walk

around the room to ensure that all students are remaining on task. I will attempt to

incorporate activities that allow for students to get up out of their seats and move

around the room during the period. If students are motivated and engaged, I

believe there will be less room for disruptive behaviors.

 What actions will you take to build mutual respect and positive relationships?

o I will always speak to my students in a respectable manner. When I need to

correct their behavior, I will not seek to embarrass them in front of their peers.

 How will you avoid escalating student behaviors?

o Depending on the actions the student is exhibiting, I may choose to ignore them

until they are in a state in which I can speak to them about the behavior they were

exhibiting. I will always remind myself that I am the adult in the classroom, and

should act as such.
