Competency 001: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS HUMAN DEVELOPMENTAL


PROCESSES AND APPLIES THIS KNOWLEDGE TO PLAN INSTRUCTION AND
ONGOING ASSESSMENT THAT MOTIVATE STUDENTS AND ARE RESPONSIVE TO
THEIR DEVELOPMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS AND NEEDS.
This competency is saying that while making curriculum you will be mindful of the student and
where they are developmentally. So making sure Freshman do Freshman type work and not
things you would teach to children with 3 more years of experience in the courses. Also that you
do not treat the returning students as if they have never stepped foot into a classroom.

Competency 002: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS STUDENT DIVERSITY AND KNOWS


HOW TO PLAN LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND DESIGN ASSESSMENTS THAT ARE
RESPONSIVE TO DIFFERENCES AMONG STUDENTS AND THAT PROMOTE ALL
STUDENTS’ LEARNING
This competency is saying you should be mindful of other cultures while planning. Even if you
live in the bible belt you cannot base curriculum around the bible ,or require students to do
anything with the bible. Also knowing at least some background on cultures in the area for
example know about Native American culture in case you want to do a lesson over something
that may offend them and their beliefs.

Competency 003: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS PROCEDURES FOR DESIGNING


EFFECTIVE AND COHERENT INSTRUCTION AND ASSESSMENT BASED ON
APPROPRIATE LEARNING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES.
This one is for making sure your goals and objectives fit not only the classroom but again the age
groups you teach. Making sure you know the rules you should follow while making the
curriculum. Also making sure the assessments, tests or quizzes match the rules along with the
course.

Competency 004: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS LEARNING PROCESSES AND


FACTORS THAT IMPACT STUDENT LEARNING AND DEMONSTRATES THIS
KNOWLEDGE BY PLANNING EFFECTIVE, ENGAGING INSTRUCTION AND
APPROPRIATE ASSESSMENTS
This one is saying you understand the different way people learn best and try to include them all
in you teaching so everyone has a good chance of learning the material well. You also have to
notice things that may impact a students learning. Example some students do better with better
with background noise but other students may not be able to focus at all from something as small
as a clicking pen.

Competency 005: THE TEACHER KNOWS HOW TO ESTABLISH A CLASSROOM


CLIMATE THAT FOSTERS LEARNING, EQUITY AND EXCELLENCE AND USES THIS
KNOWLEDGE TO CREATE A PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL ENVIRONMENT THAT IS
SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE
Now from this one not only can it be talking about making your students feel comfortable
enough to ask questions if they are not understanding. I also see it as you may like your
classroom to be extra cold all year long but you have to keep in mind the students. Will they hate
coming to your class because it is always freezing?

Competency 006: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS STRATEGIES FOR CREATING AN


ORGANIZED AND PRODUCTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND FOR MANAGING
STUDENT BEHAVIOR
You must also stay organized, maybe not everything has a file folder and four million color
coded tabs, but enough that students are faithful that you won’t lose their assignments regularly.
Not just that but being organized may help you students learn to be organized as well.

Competency 007: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS AND APPLIES PRINCIPLES AND


STRATEGIES FOR COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY IN VARIED TEACHING AND
LEARNING CONTEXTS.
This competency is something we have practiced daily in any classroom we have ever been in
whether we noticed it or not. It is saying that with each thing you present in class you must have
elements that cater to the auditory learner, the visual learners, and the hands-on learners

Competency 008: THE TEACHER PROVIDES APPROPRIATE INSTRUCTION THAT


ACTIVELY ENGAGES STUDENTS IN THE LEARNING PROCESS.
This competency is stating that for each activity you must give detailed instructions, that pertain
to the activity. Preferably instructions that can pertain to each learning style. For Example you
could have them written somewhere and also read them aloud but they must always go with the
activity.

Competency 009: THE TEACHER INCORPORATES THE EFFECTIVE USE OF


TECHNOLOGY TO PLAN, ORGANIZE, DELIVER AND EVALUATE INSTRUCTION FOR
ALL STUDENTS
This one is for the teachers who still believe you don’t really learn it unless it is written in ink on
paper. You have to adapt with the times, use the online tools your school provides. On the flip
side of this though you do not have to do every waking assignment on the computer try to find a
good balance between old and new technologies.

Competency 010: THE TEACHER MONITORS STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND


ACHIEVEMENT; PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH TIMELY, HIGH-QUALITY FEEDBACK;
AND RESPONDS FLEXIBLY TO PROMOTE LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS.
This one is for the teachers who don’t enter grades until the last day. You should keep the grades
updated so students know where they stand in order to ask for help. Not just so they know a
grade but also so they can get feedback, your essay was amazing but your grammar needs help.
Competency 011: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY
INVOLVEMENT IN CHILDREN’S EDUCATION AND KNOWS HOW TO INTERACT
AND COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY WITH FAMILIES
In this competency it says the teacher must understand that aren’t Teacher involvement is very
important in the student’s education.

Competency 012: THE TEACHER ENHANCES PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND


SKILLS BY EFFECTIVELY INTERACTING WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE
EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY AND PARTICIPATING IN VARIOUS TYPES OF
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES.
In this competency it says that the teacher should understand how much they will learn from
colleges, and should participate in workshops to learn new techniques

Competency 013: THE TEACHER UNDERSTANDS AND ADHERES TO LEGAL AND


ETHICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR EDUCATORS AND IS KNOWLEDGEABLE OF THE
STRUCTURE OF EDUCATION IN TEXAS.
You MUST know your legal responsibilities. What you should and should not do, along with
how the education system in Texas works.
