Henrietta was a poor black women who developed cervical cancer at the age of 30 then
later on had her cells stolen from her and sold. Her family continued to live without
knowing of this and without profit. In the Holocaust meant Jews experienced the
horrifying effects of medical experiments in the concentration camps. It doesn’t seem like
these two have any similarities but they are more similar then not. One of the top doctors
in these medical experiments was Josef Mengele who performed horrifying experiments
on his patients. Josef is one of the most infamous doctors that came out of the Holocaust.
In the article it talks about Mengele being a brilliant good looking guy. When he was a
young man he went to a university to study physical anthropology and genetics. Mengele
also served sometime in the military and was injured and declared unfit for combat. Then
he made his way to Auschwitz where he performed some of the most gruesome
experiments of the Holocaust. Some of these experiments involved twins which Mengele

During the holocaust many doctors did studies on patients and recorded data they sought
necessary too. Most of the victims of these experiments did not survive. Although some
survived and discuss their experience. Heinz Reimer was one of the victims of some of
the most gruesome medicals experiments in history. He was one of the few inmates to
ever survive the hypothermia experiment. This was when the patient would get
submerged into freezing water and then at the point of passing out be thrown into a
scolding hot bath. Heinz said that this experiment was conducted on is a numerous
amount of times. He was also infected by different forms of diseases then given different
serums to see which ones worked for the disease. He was infected with the malaria
disease multiple times. The Natizs put Heinz in a big glass container with infected
mosquitos. When Heinz tried to resist he was lashed with a bull whip.
In the story of
Henrietta when she went to these doctors to get better they found out that there was
something special about Henrietta’s cells. Then without her consent the doctors took her
cells and proceeded to do research on them without Henrietta or any of her family
knowing. Now one might ask themselves how this has to do with the medical
experiments in the Holocaust. Yes the medical procedures that they performed in the
holocaust were very different from taking cells from just another poor black women.
These Jews were tortured and suffered severe pain from these experiments. Now a days
the data that was found in these experiments is still being used today. Just like
Henrietta’s cells are being used today. Some argue that it’s wrong that they are using this
medical data from the Holocaust because the way they distracted this information was
gruesome. Others argue that if these people went through all of this then this data should
be shared. But how this is similar to the Henrietta story is information and data was
taken from both Henrietta and the Jews in the holocaust. Also there is very little
recognition that was given to these poor people who have suffered and Henrietta whose
family has been living in poverty while millions of dollars are being made off of her
cells.
The Twins Eva and Miriam Mozes Survived Auschwitz. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2017.
Out of all of the experiments done on Jews in the holocaust the most intriguing would be
the ones with twins. In this article it states that there was mass amounts off different
experiments done on these twins such as trying to chance their eye color, transfusions of
blood, and even trying to chance the sex of the twin. There were 3000 twins to pass
through Auschwitz but only roughly 200 survived and shared their story such as Eva and
Miriam Mozes. They grew up in a small family living in a small village in Romania
when in March of 1944 they were told they are being relocated. They were then taken to
a ghetto and deported to Auschwitz. Eva tells the story of when she first arrived to the
camp. Her Miriam and their mother got out of the cattle car her mother gripping the girls
hands tightly when an SS soldier approached them asking if they were twins.
Immediately after they found out they were twins they were taken from their mother
without any warning or explanation. From there on gruesome experiments where done to
the girls as in giving them shots to give them disease to see how the other would react.
The girls also saw the horrifying effects of Mengele trying to sow twins together to create
Siamese twins. It was a miracle that the two girls survived. Later in life they
kidneys never fully formed and she died in 1993. Most likely a result of the experiments.
"Medical Experiments of the Holocaust and Nazi Medicine |." The Holocaust History - A
People's and Survivor History - Remember.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 May 2017.
In this article it talks about all the different medical experiments that they performed on
people in the Holocaust. Some of these include freezing, genetics, infectious diseases,
surgery and many more. What they would do for the freezing experiment is the Nazis
would put the person in freezing water then take them out and see how fast they could
warmup the body. These experiments where done to see what the most effective way to
warm soldiers up in the war. Most of these freezing experiments lead to hypothermia and
also death. During this time there were many different kinds of diseases that where
unknown to science. So during this time many Jews where infected with different
diseases and the Nazis tested different cures. This lead too many medical problems if
survived. The Nazis also did many surgeries on Jews including mutilation and cutting
open the victim to examine the human body. They would also take different body parts
and see if they could attach them in place of other limbs. Genetic testing was also a very
popular medical study that they did. The reason Hitler selected all of these people in
these concentration camps was because he wanted to create the perfect race of people. So
they did studies to test if they can chance the genes of people.
