EPC 2903 Primary Lesson Planning Template Year 2, Sem 2
Grade  Level:  1
Subject:  Literacy
Learning  Outcome  :    By  the  end  of  this  lesson  students  will  be  able  to..

-   Know what does a full stop, question mark, and exclamation mean.

-   Differentiation when to use the full stop, question mark, or exclamation marks while writing
sentences.

-   Write sentences by using a capital letter for the first word in the sentence, finger space, and ending the
sentence by a period, ending it by a question mark if it is a question, and exclamation mark if some
one is shouting.

Resources   Preparation  (what  do  you  need  to  do/make  before
  class?)
-   White board
-   Computer -   Check that the PPT is on.
-   Power Point slides
-   Worksheets -   Write the date and learning objectives on the
-   9 Small colored baskets board.
-   Small cards

Key  vocabulary/  Target  Language

-   Capital  letter  to  start  a  sentence.

-   Finger  space

-   Punctuation:  Question  mark  (?),  Full  stop  (.),
Exclamation  mark  (!)

Opening  (warmer  activity  +  teacher  introduction/demonstration  of  small  group  activities)

-   I will first start the lesson by going over the learning objectives with the student and explain
that we are going to revise sentences.

-   Next, ask the students questions and after each question I will let them think, pair, and share.
Time:      20  min
Whole

Qs such as: “Who can tell me a sentence starts with what, and ends with what?” “What do we
use to make spaces between each word in a sentence?” Also, “When do we use a question
mark and an exclamation mark?”

-   Some students might know what a question mark sentence starts with, so I will let them
answer, and then, write on the board the words that starts a question sentence (Did, Who,
What, Where). And then, list the words quickly that shows that the sentence is an exclamation
sentence.
-   Next, I will display the power point slides, the slides in the power point consists of showing
the students that a sentence starts with a capital letter, using finger spaces between words,
ending a sentence using a full stop, using a question mark when it is a question, and
exclamation mark when someone is shouting, surprised, or excited.

Guided  Experience  (group  working  with  the  teacher)

-   In this group, the teacher assistant will be seated to help the lower ability students to do the
activity.

-   The activity for the LA students is a worksheet that has a sentence and a box in the end, the
students will have to put either a full stop, a question or exclamation mark. Also, the first letter
in the sentence will be lower cased, so, the students have to cross it out and write it in an upper
case.

-   In the end of the worksheet, their will be one line for the students to write their own sentence
using a capital letter for the first letter and using finger spaces, the teacher assistant will tell
them to choose if they want the sentence to end with a full stop, exclamation mark or they
want to ask a question.

Time:  17min

Small

Independent  Experience  (small  group  activity  1)  (HA)

-   In this group, students will write their own sentences. Their will be 3 small baskets placed in
the middle of the table, 1 basket that has a full stop drawing on it, the second has a question
mark drawn on it, and the third will have an exclamation make drawn on it. Students will have
to write as many sentences as they want, and place each sentence they wrote in the correct
place in the basket. For example, if a student wrote a sentence that ends with a full stop,
he/she will place it in the full stop basket, whereas if It ends with a question mark, the card
will be placed in the question mark basket, so it goes the same for the exclamation mark.

Independent  Experience  (small  group  activity  2)  (HA)

-   Same activity as activity 1

Independent  Experience(small  group  activity  3)  (MA)

-   In this middle ability group, students will be doing the same activity using the baskets as
group 1 and 2, but, they will have to write 3 or 4 sentences for each punctuation.

Closing  (review  learning  -LO)

-   Ask questions like:

-   What does a sentence start with? And end with?

Time:            3  min
Whole

What punctuation do we use if it is a question? And what punctuation do we use if it was an

excitement, or surprised sentence?

Assessment  (to  be  done  during  activity  time,  who  and  what  will  be  assessed?)

-      Tell the students: thumbs up if u found the activity easy, and helped you learn more about writing a
sentence.

-   My observations on students, and how they respond to questions.

Reflection  WWW/EBI

Behavior  management:

-   WWW: The students listened to my instructions, and some followed the mat rules. / EBI: Even better
if I knew how to handle the misbehaved students more.

Groupings/differentiation:

-   There were 4 groups, 1 with lower ability students that was guided by the teacher assistant, 2 high
ability groups, 1 middle ability groups. The groups went well while doing the activity and writing
sentence.
Next  Steps  in  learning  and  teaching

Next steps in learning and teaching; I will try to make the classroom’s atmosphere more chilled, and I will
have better classroom management and more knowledge on how to manage the students while they are on the
mat.
