1 Usage
21 1/4”-2000PSI Annular BOP must be equipped with hydraulic control system in use. It is
usually used with ram BOP, but it can be used solely. It can complete following operations:
It can seal on almost any shape or size— kellys, drill pipe, tool joints, drill collars,
casing or wireline.
When there is no drilling tool in preventer, it can completely shut off the hole.
With an accumulator, forced tripping with 18°/35° welded tool joints is allowed.
It can be used as diverter system with diversion Spool.

Two-letter combination denotes the highest limit and the lowest limit. Descript it as following:
The lowest limit (No. 1 position) A The highest limit (No. 2 position)
15℉(–26℃) A 180℉(82℃)
B 0℉(–17.8℃) B 200℉(93℃)
C 10℉(–12.2℃) C 220℉(104℃)
D 20℉(–6.7℃) D 250℉(121℃)
For example, BB indicates temperature grade from –17.8 ℃ to 93 ℃ . The concrete
temperature grade signs code on the sealing parts. Normally, the working temperature grade of
RS Company’s seals is BB.
The structure of 21 1/4”-2000PSI Annular BOP is Model A. It can reliably seal on almost any
shape or size pipe and can also seal a hole without anything in it. Forced tripping is allowed when
the BOP is shut. Reliable sealing, high working pressure, easy to operate and maintain & swift to
close and open is its advantages.

3 Working Principle
When there is the need of sealing well upon kick, the high pressure oil from the hydraulic
control system enters the bottom of piston through the bottom oil inlet under the shell to close the
cavity and push the piston upward to force the element to move towards center, the segment close
together to press the in-between rubber core to the center of wellhead to realize the sealing of
drilling tools or full sealing of wellhead. When opening, the hydraulic control pressure oil enters the
top of piston through upper oil inlet of shell to, push the piston downward, the element returns to
5
original position under the action of its own elasticity and opens the wellhead.
21 1/4”-2000psi annular BOP is constituted by 6 main parts of shell, top cover, piston, outer
sleeve, claw block and packing element. The number of parts is small to enable the BOP to be
more reliable and easy for service, and the cover and the shell are jointed by claw chuck, so it is
convenient to be dismantled on site. (Refer to Figure 3)
Only two(2) joints for hydraulic connection “close” & “open”;light weight.
All of the power seals which is used to seal the hydraulic oil adopt labiate structure
that will decrease the wear furthest, seal reliable and avoid leakage.
The part inside the BOP which will touch the drilling fluid can trim H2S, meeting the NACE MR-01-75
requirements
4.5 Element
4.5.1The element is in tapered shape, produced with segments and vulcanized rubber, and
the segment is made of steel alloy and the service life is long.

(Figure 5)
4.5.2 Uneasy to lift: Under the state of well sealing, the well pressure will force the central
rubber of rubber core to turn upward, but the upper bars of segment stop such turn to keep the
rubber in the safe and compressed state, so as to near larger pressure without tearing.
4.5.3 Assistance of well pressure for sealing: Upon closing, the well pressure acting on the
annular area in upper part of inner cavity of piston will push the piston upward, which promotes the
tight sealing of rubber core, enhances the reliability of sealing, and therefore reduces the pressure
on closing and opening of hydraulic control.
In case there are drilling tools inside well, it can use the method of cutting the rubber core to
replace the rubber core.

5.1 Installation
Following systems are required at well site to use the annular BOP.
Stripping operations are undoubtedly the most severe application for any preventer because
of the wear of the sealing element or exposed to as the drill string is moved through the preventer
7
under pressure. To prolong sealing element life, it is important to use proper operating procedures
when stripping. The recommended procedures are:
(1) Close the preventer with 1500psi closing pressure.
(2) Just prior to commencing stripping operations reduce closing pressure to a value
sufficient to allow to a slight leak. The slight leak can provide lubrication and prevent
excessive temperature build up in the element. As the element wears, pressure will need
to be incrementally increased to prevent excessive leakage. Note: string with 18°tool
joints should be used, and the tripping rate could not exceed 0.2m/s.
(3) If conditions will not allow leakage during stripping operations, the closing pressure
should be adjusted to a value just sufficient to maintain a seal.
(4) As required closing pressures approach 1,500psi, excessive leakage still exists, it is said
that the rubber has been worn seriously. It must be treated to complete stripping
operations.
(1) After installation at well site, the BOP should be pressure tested according to rated
standards.
(2) After reaching the target zone, the BOP should be checked by closing and opening it
every two stripping. If there is any problem, it must be treated.
(3) When a blowout happens with drill string in the well, the annular BOP can be used to
control the well pressure, but it can’t be used for a long time. First it can reduce the
service life of the rubber, second this kind of BOP has no locking system. Normally, don’t
use the BOP to shut off a well without any thing in it. Be attention: at this situation, the
max well pressure should be half of the rated working pressure.
(4) When the BOP is in close position, it is allowed to move the drill tool up and down, but
not turn it.
(5) Do not release well pressure by opening annular BOP to avoid rubber damage.
(6) Every time the BOP is opened, it must be checked if the BOP is opened completely to
avoid rubber damage.
(7) Hydraulic oil must be used to open and close the BOP and keep clean.
(8) 1500psi of control pressure is recommended.
8
pipe on the joint.
(2) Take out bolt,press block(Item 6,7)
;
(3) Lift out the upper housing;
(4) Screw the eyebolts into the sealing element and lift it out. If there is drill tool in it, the new
element should be first cut open with rubber cutter. (see figure 6)The cut surface should
be smooth. The old sealing element should be cut open too, and lift it out and exchange it
with the new one.
6.1.2Disassembly of adapter ring and piston
(1) Remove the sealing element, then screw the eyebolts into the piston and lift it out.
(2) Remove the bolt (Item 15) between outer sleeve & body and lift the outer sleeve out.
1.Check whether the seal rings are ok, ; If there are any damages or maturing, they should
be changed.
2.To lubricate the inner surface of body, piston and outer sleeve by mechanical oil, brush
grease on claw block.
3.Install the outer sleeve and fix it;
4.Install the piston.
5.Install the packing element.
6.Install the upper housing.
7.Install the upper housing by bolts and press block(Item 6 & 7)
8.Tighten the bolt (Item 21), recommended torque is 400~540N.m,when tightening, relieve
the bolts(item 19)and tighten it;
9.Install the screw on the “Close ””open” joint。
9
5. Store rubber parts in a relaxed position. For example, do not bend a rubber part and force it
into a small box. This accelerates aging in the stressed (bent) area.
6. Keep the storage area as dry as possible and wipe off any oil, grease or liquids that
accidentally spill on the rubber.
(1) If the seal element can not be closed to position, it can be opened and closed several
times. But if it still can’t be closed to position, the rubber should be changed.
(2) If the rubber is over worn or damaged, it should be changed in time.
(3) If a BOP has opened for a long time, some foreign matter may be settled on the rubber. In
this situation, the rubber should be cleaned and moved.
This is because the BOP has closed for a long time, the rubber has deformed permanently, or
there would be some cement under the rubber. In this situation, the rubber must be cleaned or
changed.
(1) All the pipes should be blew with pressure air before connected. All connectors should be
cleaned.
(2) There is leakage in the oil pipes. The BOP has not operated for a long time, or it is plugged
by some foreign matter. So the BOP must be operated according to the operation procedure.
