CHIDRENS DAY CELEBRATIONS
“Pipena Kekulu”

As Leos we are mainly focused on

children and their happiness. The
world children’s day is on 1st of
October each year. Children are the
most precious and valuable resource
in the world. As Leos of Polgasowita
Leo club we thought of sharing our
time, happiness and skills with small
children who have lost their parents
and now living in a children’s home.

On 1st of October 2017 we choose the Pepiliyana Children home “Noguchi” for us to
celebrate our children’s day with these small kids. Our Leos came up with their singing,
dancing, musical skills and compassionate skills to talk and understand the mentality
of these small kids. Identification and treating calmness and throwing spiritual blessing
towards them was mostly done by the Leos, decorating their faces with pleasing smile.
Leos supported them to play games and make dramas creatively with their talent. They
also enjoyed the refreshments provided by us.

Walking along my path as a Leo………………

It was October 2011; I was pursuing my carrier & higher studies after completing my
school life. My father was the Lions Club president of Lions Club of Ingiriya, a very
active one in fact, so he wanted to start a Leo Club. Naturally, being the Club president’s
daughter, I had no choice to make. The only way I consoled myself was by thinking that
I will attend this Leo Club only during the first year and drop out soon after. So, I joined
Leo Club of Ingiriya United as the first secretary at the charter Installation ceremony.
And that is how I joined this wonderful movement.

Drop out – I never did, up to this day. Do you know why? Because LEO not only changed
my life, it changed ME. It changed me in to the person I always dreamt of becoming.

Being schooled at ladies College, and that too as a hosteller, I was exposed to the cream
of the Colombo society. I didn’t get much opportunity to make friends around the area
which I live in. I really wanted to, but I didn’t have that privilege. Within a short time of
becoming a Leo, my best friends were from around the area I live, Horana & Ingiriya. We
became like a family. We did so many projects, grew as a team, made mistakes, learnt
from it together, we bathed in the rivers, ate meals together like we’ve never seen food,
we played, we danced, we laughed, we cried – all together. And I cannot express that
in words, how wonderful it was and how much we lived the true meaning of life. I felt
ashamed for living my life the way I used to, before becoming a Leo.

Before becoming a Leo, I had a terrible speech fright. I was the worst at public speaking,
worst ever. But when I joined this movement, I got the opportunities to step by step
develop my public speaking skills, today I am happy to say that I have the confidence
to speak in front of any audience, and in my carrier life I have been able to come a long
way, because of my speaking skills all thanks to Leoism.

I have one obsession in my life- Medals. I love medals. When I was in school I used
to participate in so many meets like a crazy girl in order to win medals. I would do
anything, to earn them. And that’s the other fulfillment I got after becoming a Leo. I
participated in camps and sports events and collected so many medals I never even
dreamt I could collect in one life lime (haha).

I always had a passion for social service; my Leo life made me do so many projects to
make others lives so much better. I used to spend my entire salary on projects. I truly
felt I was living, when I saw the blessings from the numerous people I have helped.

My love for adventure was lived, by participating for Leo youth camps- these
opportunities a normal human being does not get. Where do you get to perform a
dance on stage, if you are not a dancer? Leo platform to showcase your talents is
endless.

In a society where all are waiting to pick one’s faults, Society at Leo is different. They
appreciate you, for every little thing you do, and make you feel really special.

During the past 7 years, I have held many titles, and accomplished many awards, all of
which I passionately treasure. They are not pieces of wood; they are the proof that I
lived a life to make others lives better while accomplishing so much to myself. Out of
my awards, my favorites are, Most popular Leo of the District, Most popular Leo of Sri
Lanka and Best shooter awards.

These are just a few interesting unknown facts I have revealed about myself on Leo.
Today my best friends are Leos. I want to thank each and every Leo I have met along
my journey as a Leo, I want to thank them for every smile , for every word, because it
all made me the happy person I am today. I want to thank every District chairmen for
Leos, for being like parents, for protecting us, and encouraging us.

This movement is a wonderful place, I sincerely pray that all new Leos will take it
forward, preserve its quality and enhance their leadership skills to be fully skilled young
sons & daughters of Mother Sri Lanka.

SIYAK SIPsAL
02.11.2017 & 07.11.2017

The second phase of the continuous project ‘siyak sipsal’ by the leo club of Polgasowita
commenced at the Millawa maha vidyalaya on both 2nd and 7th of November. At daybreak
the classes were lined with students hoping to sit for their ordinary level examinations and
the leos started with their seminars for the students facing difficulties on Mathematics.

It is believed that education is the passport for the future and with these youngsters
holding our tomorrow in their palms it is our duty to help mold them into the adults they
will be in few years. The days were spent through the hours beginning at 9 am and ending
at 12 noon. The Leos discussed difficult areas of the subject whilst revising the subject.

As the famous mathematician Paul Thurstan once told “Mathematics is not about numbers,
equations, algorithms or computations; its about understanding” we made sure that
each child was given individual attention and discussed the initial parts of their syllabus.
Discussion of past papers was of major importance as the students got a much more of a
distinguished understanding of the subject.

The seminars were concluded with the students having a more comprehensive grasp of
the subject. The key to life is not accumulation, it is contribution; the leos contributed their
knowledge towards the community by helping the students facing a major aspect of their
life that one day will make a difference to our nation and the world.

Warnaloka’ 05.12.2017

The project ‘Warnaloka’ was done targeting the Sri Sangamiththaramaya - Gonapola, a
monastery and meditation center where sil-thero reside on 5th December 2017.

This was a project where the Leos acted in two stages where the initial stage needed
the monastery walls to be chemical soaked whereas in phase two the walls were cleaned
and painted. Further oil lamps were requested to be donated to the temple too. The Leo
movement is one that gives priority to religion as this gives us emotional and spiritual
uplifting to us. We also saw the societal need to aid the monastery in converting the
atmosphere to provide the expected calmness of mind which the ambiance did not provide
when we decided on the project.

Since the project was completed on a poya day the people who had come to pray also
praised the diligent effort and we believed that our side aim of inciting society to further
take part in such meritorious deeds had also had positive effect.

THAMBADOLA LAKE CLEANUP PROJECT
In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks

Know Your Human Rights
06.12.2017

Leos of Polgasowita joined hands with the Leo club of Godigamuwa and United Nations
Sri Lanka on 6th December 2017 for an awareness project named ‘Know Your Human
Rights’ on 6th December 2017 at Buwanekaba Vidyalaya, Maharagama.

This was a step in initiative to create awareness of the human rights which reflect the
minimum standards necessary for people to live with, amongst school children. We
identified the need for educating the general society of rights which are essential in day
to day activities, however, most people are unaware of and thereby resulting in people
being unfairly breached of their basic rights. We felt that the system of educating society
on their rights and such should start from school level and this was one such initiative
step. The success of this project could be seen by how happy the children were the
appreciation of the teachers which were voiced afterwards.

Christmas in the Heart
23.12.2017

Not forgetting the important factor of the month being the commemoration of the birth of
Christ. The final project of the month was ‘Christmas in the Heart’ done on 23rd December
2017 at St. Joseph Vaz Church, Moratuwa.

It was a project done with the sole aim of providing children with happiness while also
distributing stationary items which would be necessary for their upcoming school year.

The day filled with Christmas carols, games of various nature and filling snacks was
rewarded with the twinkling eyes and the laughter of the children. The further surprise
by the bringing in of a secret Santa caused cheers to erupt from the crowd which was
beaming in delight as the gifts were distributed.

We believe that the real meaning of Christmas was fully celebrated by the Leo Club of
Polgasowita during this festive season where this project gave a wonderful closure for the
month.

Dilindu Sahana 01.11.2017
Not everyone in today’s world is blessed with the
luxury of being able to live a very comfortable
life. Some are forced into living with a basic salary
with just a few rupees in hand. The leos of Leo
club of Polgasowita with our parental club Lions
club of Polgasowita took the initial step towards a
continuous monthly project where we provide a
small breakfast to the “pin padi” receivers of the
rural area of Polgasowita on the 1st of every month.
“pin padi” receivers are the low income recipients who are, in most days unable to afford
all three meals; they receive a small amount from the government which they collect from
the post office of the area on the beginning of each month. The main objective of this
project is to take away their hunger for atleast one meal of the day for most of them aren’t
able to afford it.

The leos gathered at the post office of Polgasowita at 8 am and provided them with a few
snacks and tea. Whilst they were enjoying their meal the leos sparked conversation with
a few of them, hearing about their struggles and the small odd jobs they do. The project
was concluded by 9.30 am and we left the premises while knowing we will be returning the
next month as well. After all, giving is not only about doing donations, it is about making a
huge difference and impact on somebody’s life.

Gebini Matha Ha Ladaru Upakara 16.12.2017

Further on the 16th December 2017, a project on
‘Gebini Matha Ha Ladaru Upakara’ was done by
us at the Wethra Hospital to promote Women
Empowerment.

Club of Polgasowita as the annual Health care
project through which sanitary items, which
would be helpful to keep up the good health of
the babies, were distributed among almost 110
pregnant mothers. These mothers who were
nearing their due dates were also provided with
refreshments and while at their daily checkups at
the hospital.
This was dne with the aim of uplifting the quality of life of the community of Polgasowita.

BLISS
Apeksha cancer hospital, Maharagama
19.11.2017

It is said that children with cancer are like candles in the wind who accept that they are
most likely to be extinguished by a blast of wind from nowhere, but yet they flicker and
dance to remain alive. It is of importance that we keep those children happy to help them
win the battles they fight. Leos of leo club of Polgasowita joined hands with the Leo club
of Truma -Argentina. To bring a more rhythmic tune and cheerfulness for the little flames
to flicker and dance in.

At the break of day on the 19th of November the leos met the children undergoing
treatment and presently accommodating the Apeksha cancer hospital. We began with an
art competition, as the room filled with colours and imagination some of the leos spoke
with the parents about their struggles as they were lunging through the windows trying to
sneak a peak of their smiling little one.

The competition concluded and we were given permission to take the children to get some
fresh air and to play a fun round of Lady, hunter and tiger; later the children volunteered
for storytelling. We returned indoors and declared that all of them have won the art
competition and distributed colouring books, biscuits and promergrante for each child.

The children waved us goodbye and left with beaming smiles as we received bunch of
appreciation from the parents but, we believe that real superheroes live in the hearts of
small children fighting big battles. We walked out of the hospital seeing the fight those
young warriors are fighting and happy that we could atleast be a bit of help for their
strenuous journey.
