PART – B (5 x 12 = 60)
Answer ALL the Questions

11. A simply supported of beam of 12 m span is subjected to two

loads W each at quarter span points. If the limiting deflection is
15 mm, find the value of W.
Assume I = 6 x 10 7 mm4, E = 1 x 105 N/mm2.
(or)
12. Find the maximum deflection in an cantilever beam of span 3 m
subjected to 125 kN load at midspan.

13. Determine the ratio of buckling strength of a solid steel column

to that hollow column of a same material and same cross section
area.
(or)
14. Calculate the buckling load for a column of T section the flange
width being 100 mm and over all depth 80 mm, the flange and
stem are 10 mm thick. The column is 3m long, hinged at both
ends. E = 2 x 105N/mm2.

15. A spherical shell of 800 mm diameter is subjected to an internal

pressure of 1.5 MPa. What should be the minimum thickness of
the shell, if the tensile stress is not to exceed 40 MPa?
(or)
16. A cast iron cylinder of 200 mm internal diameter and 12.5 mm
thick is closely wound with a wire of 4 mm, diameter under a
stress of 55 MPA. What are the stresses developed in the cylinder
and steel wire, when water under a pressure of 3 MPa is admitted
into the cylinder. Take Es = 200 GPa, Ec = 100 GPa and 1/m =
0.25.
17. A Steel tube has a mean diameter of 100 mm and a thickness of
3mm. Calculate the torque which can be transmitted by the tube
with a factor of safety of 2.25. If the criterion of failure is (a)
maximum shear stress (b) maximum strain energy (c) maximum
shear strain energy. The elastic limit of the steel in tension is 225
MN/ m2 and the poison’s ration is 0.3.
(or)
18. A horizontal shaft of 75 mm diameter projects from a bearing and
in addition to the torque transmitted the shaft carries a vertical
load of 8kN at 300 mm from the bearing. If the safe stress for the
material, as determined in a simple tensile test, is 135 MN/m 2,
find the safe torque to which the shaft may be subjected using as
the criterion (a) the maximum shearing stress; (b) the maximum
strain energy. Poisson’s ratio = 0.29.

19. A Cantilever of length 2 m is constructed from 150 x 100 x 12

mm angle and arranged with its 150 mm leg vertical. If a vertical
load of 5kN is applied at the free end, passing through the shear
centre of the section, determine the maximum tensile and
compressive stress set up across the section.
(or)
20. A 60mmx40mmx6mm unequal angle is placed with the longer
leg vertical ,and is used as a beam..It is subjected to a B.M. of
12 KN- cm acting in the vertical plane through the centroid of the
section. Determine the maximum bending stress induced in
section.
