Dear Mr. Secretary’
It was a pleasure speaking with you the other night at the Marine barracks, | appreciate your interest in speeding up the cleanup
and remediation of the Navy-Grumman plume at the former Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant (NWIRP) and Grumman site
Tocated in Bethpage, New York, which is in my district.
‘As mentioned, the cleanup of this plume has been languishing for the past 40 years and last Friday 1 held a meeting in Bethpage
with all stakeholders including the US Navy, Northrop Grumman, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation,
Bethpage Water District, Town of Oyster Bay and many other interested parties, to discuss how we can continue working together to
‘move this process forward and finally clean up the site.
‘Today, the front page of our local newspaper Newsday (see attached) noted that the Bethpage Water District will be shutting
down three water supply wells located in the plume area and will instad be drilling new clean water supply wells outside of the plume
at a cost of $17 million to the district.
| know that like me, you are sometimes frustrated by the often slow and burdensome bureaucratic process that must occur
inside the federal government in order to get something done. One of the biggest hurdles to moving this project forward that was
discussed at our meeting last week was the Navy’s process and Department of Defense regulations conceming the purchase of property
within the plume in order to conduct extraction and treatment of the contaminated water.
With the Bethpage Water District's decision to cease operations at these three wells, I request that the Navy immediately
consider acquiring these wells from the water district in order to perform extraction and treatment on site. | believe this presents an
‘opportunity to streamline the process and get the remediation effort underway quickly while providing funding for the Bethpage Water
District, who to this point, has shouldered a great deal ofthe cost in order to provide safe and clean drinking water to their residents,
After 40 years, we cannot miss any chance to streamline the process and expedite remediation ofthe Navy/Grumman plume.
[ook forward to working with you on this request, comprehensive cleanup and overcoming bureaucratic barriers that reduce the
impact of limited resources.
Inthe meantime, please feel free to call me if you have any questions. My cell phone nunber Ԥ
With kindest regards, I am
Sincerely,
Thomas R. Suozzi
