ASSIGNMENT 1
(Chapter 1 – Chapter 3)

QUESTION 1 :
The National Bank Berhad selected a sample of 40 students’ checking
accounts. Below is their end – of – the – month balances (in RM).
404 74 234 149 279 215 123 355 287 234
68 489 57 185 141 758 703 125 350 440
337 252 27 521 968 712 503 489 327 608
358 425 43 321 72 863 302 127 303 203
a) Tally the data into a frequency distribution table of 5 classes using
RM 0 to less than RM 200 as the first class interval.
b) Draw an ogive for the data using a graph paper. Hence, find the
median from the graph.
c) Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the data.
d) Find the mode value for the data. Explain its meaning.
e) Describe and sketch the shape of the distribution using appropriate
technique.

QUESTION 2 :
Ten batteries from each of three brands (A, B, and C) were put on test to
determine their lifetimes (in hours).
A : 41 289 214 102 38 94 179 87
116 155
B : 39 65 22 64 22 191 99 32
142 317
C : 24 95 139 122 41 360 318 34
43 18
a) Calculate the sample mean and variance for each set of the data.
b) Calculate the mean deviation for each brand of batteries.
c) Compared the three brands, which brand of batteries obtained more
consistent lifetimes?
d) Calculate the third quartile for brand C and interpret the value.

QUESTION 3 :

The following table shows the test scores for Basic Statistics subject obtained
by the Class A and Class B Quantitative Science students.

Number of students
Score
Class A Class B
30 – 39 1 1
40 – 49 2 1
50 – 59 6 6
60 – 69 8 4
70 – 79 4 8
80 – 89 3 10
90 – 99 1 1
Total 25 31

a) Find the mean score for Class A and Class B.

b) Estimate the variance for Class’s A score and Class’s B score.
c) Using the appropriate measure determines which class’s score has a
higher variability.
d) Draw a histogram and frequency polygon for Class A on the same
graph paper.
e) Draw a histogram and frequency polygon for Class A on the same
graph paper.
f) From the graph obtained in (d) and (e), compare the shape of the
distribution for both classes.

QUESTION 4 :

0.86564 0.94315 0.09739 0.04262 0.11894

a) Draw a histogram and frequency polygon on the same graph paper.

b) Draw and ogive for the above data. Hence, locate the position for first,
second and third quartile.
c) Estimate the mean and mode for the above data.
b) From the value obtained in (c), what is the shape of the distribution for
this data? Hence, sketch the shape to prove your answer.
c) Estimate the standard deviation for the data and using the appropriate
measure, what is the shape of the distribution?
