Chapter 3
Vocabulary
Transversal - a line that intersects 2 or more coplanar lines

Exterior angles - angles formed by a transversal outside of the other 2 lines

Alternate angles - angles on alternate sides of the transversal

Corresponding angles - angles in the same position relative to the transversal

but on different lines
Vocabulary
Same side angles - angles on the same side as the transversal

Interior angles - angles formed by a transversal that are between 2 lines

Polygon - a closed plane figure with at least three

sides that are segments.
Theorems
Postulates
● Theorem 3-1 - if a transversal
● Postulate 3-1 - if a transversal intersects 2 parallel lines then the
intersects 2 parallel lines then the alternate interior angles are
corresponding angles are congruent congruent
● Post. 3-2 - Converse of the ● Theorem 3-2 - Converse of the
corresponding angles postulate - If alternate interior angles theorem - If
two lines and a transversal form two lines and a transversal form
corresponding angles that are alternate interior angles that are
congruent, then the two lines are congruent, then the two lines are
parallel. parallel.
● Theorem 3-6 - Converse of the
same-side interior angles theorem - If
two lines and a transversal form
same-side interior angles that are
supplementary, then the two lines are
parallel.
Lines in the coordinate plane:

Slope-intercept form - y = mx + b
Standard Form - Ax + By = C
Point-slope form - y - y1 = m (x - x1)
Theorems
Theorem 3-7 - Converse of the alternate exterior angles theorem- If two lines and a transversal form
alternate exterior angles that are
congruent, then two lines are parallel.

Theorem 3-8 - Converse of the same-side Exterior angles theorem - If two lines and a transversal form
same-side exterior angles that are supplementary, then the two line are parallel.

Theorem 3-12 - the sum of the measures of the angles in a triangle is 180
Theorems
Theorem 3-14 - Polygon Angle-Sum theorem - The sum of the measures of the angles of an n-gon is
(n-2)180.

Slopes of Parallel Lines Theorem - if two nonvertical lines are parallel, their slopes are equal. If the slopes of
two distinct non vertical lines are equal, the lines are parallel. Any two vertical lines are parallel.

Slopes of Perpendicular Lines - If two nonvertical lines are perpendicular, the product of their slopes is -1. If
the slopes of two lines have a product of -1, the lines are perpendicular. Any horizontal line and vertical line
are perpendicular.
