Strengths of the lesson: Place Value

Khawla started her lesson with prior knowledge of learners allowing them to rote count. She
made good use of differentiation while the learners counted. She stopped at intervals to
allow them to count on from a given number as well as counting backwards and forwards
using actions.
Her use of the dice to get learners to understand place value was put to good use however,
she needed to show the tens and ones clearing when written onto the board. I liked the way
she used the concrete objects to show learners to make groups of ten. Introducing cards to
show the group of ten and the ones gave the visual learners an understanding and they
could make the connection between concrete and abstract.
She controlled learners very well. Discipline was excellent. Her transition from one activity to
the other was smooth and learners responded to her ringing the bell or singing to them.
Great effort with loads of learning taking place.

Areas for development:

The game on the board where learners had to throw the dice and write down the numbers
to show tens and ones, she needed to explain that the first number thrown would represent
eg: tens then write the number down, next let’s throw the dice again, this number would
represent ones.

Learners were not sure how to bring the two numbers together. Great effort was done!
