Conjugation

1. Verb = Action word


2. Pronouns = Replaces the noun or the subject of the sentence.
3. Pronouns
I= Je We = Nous
You (informal) = Tu You (formal) or all of you = Vous
He = Il They (all boys, or boys and girls) = Ils
She = Elle They (all girls only) = Elles
One = On
Who = Qui
Everyone = Tout le monde

4. Conjugation = CHANGE = Changing the verb to match the pronoun or the subject.
5. Why must we conjugate? = It’s the rule!!!
6. Verbs in French = There are 3 kinds
a. ER Parler = to talk
b. RE Rendre visit = to visit
c. IR Choisir = to choose
7. Infinitive form: The verb has NOT been conjugated. (see # 4) They end with –ER, -RE or –
IR.
8. Conjugation – Three steps
a. Cut – off the endings (er, re or ir)
b. Copy – the stem (piece of the verb left over)
c. Paste – on the endings (see # 9, 10, or 11 depending on the type of verb you have)
9. ER Endings
Je = -e Nous = -ons
Tu = -es Vous = -ez
Il = -e Ils = -e
Elle = -e Elles = -e
On = -e
Qui = -e
Tout le monde = -e
10. RE Endings
Je -s Nous -ons
Tu -s Vous -ez
Il Ils -ent
Elle Elles -ent
Qui

11. IR Endings
Je -is Nous -issons
Tu -is Vous -issez
Il -it Ils -issent
Elle -it Elles -issent

Irregular Verbs!
There are some verbs that we have studied so far that do not follow these rules!

Faire does not follow these rules.

Faire = to do
Je fais Nous faisons
Tu fais Vous faites
Il fait Ils font
Elle fait Elles font
Qui fait

Tout le monde fait

Aller – to go
Je vais Nous allons
Tu vas Vous allez
Il Ils
Elle va Elles vont
On / Qui

There will be several verbs this year that will not follow these rules!
