Course Title : Energy and Production Technology
Semester/ Year : Odd/ 2015-2016
Weight : 3 credits
Duration : 16 weeks effective, 2 lecture hours per week
Instructors : Dr. Yosef Manik (YMA) ; Rizal Sinaga, MT (RZS) ; Hadi Saragi, MT (HSS)
Consultation Time : By appointment

1 Course Description
This course provides the second year students of Engineering Management a systematic and comprehensive
understanding about the physical processes that govern energy conversion into forms used by society. The
course includes the analysis of all major energy sources, storage, flows, and conversion that have shaped the
evolution of the biosphere and civilization. Throughout the course, students are introduced with the big picture
of the complexities and the peculiarities of the real world of global energetic systems. Energy and Production
Technology is a broad discourse which provides references on all important matters of energy issues, from
natural energy flows to possible energy futures, and to economics and environmental issues. It is expected that
upon completion of this course, students will have more holistic view of energy systems, be cognizant of the
role of energy in nature and society, and be motivated to self-explore the emerging issues on the energy science,
technology, and policy.

2 Prerequisites
This course is targeted to the second year students of Engineering Management. Prerequisites are Fundamental
Physics and Basic Chemistry. Engineering Thermodynamics is put as co-requisite.

3 Course Objective
Upon taking the course the students are expected:
1. Students understand the principles of energy flow in the biosphere, the principles of photosynthetic and
global primary production, and the techniques in energy provision during the pre-industrial and industrial
era.
2. Students understand the basic concepts in chemistry and properties of hydrocarbon fuels, the techniques in
extraction of selected fossil fuels, the sciences in combustion of selected fossil fuels, and the principles of
selected utilization of fossil fuels in society.
3. Students are able to develop understanding and construct arguments on selected topics through writing up a
connection paper
4. Students understand the principles and emerging trends of renewable energies and the economics of energy
in terms of cost and environmental issues

4 Course Format
This course will be delivered through classroom lecture, writing-up a connection paper that address selected
topic, and field visit to observe how power plant works, group discussion to address selected case as assigned by
the instructor.

5 Grading Procedure
Student performance will be marked based on the following structure (Table 1):

pg. 1 of 2
Table 1: Grading structure

No Category Due date Weight

1 Quizzes and homework Impromptu 10%
2 Written exam during the mid-term exam period Week #8 30%
3 Connecting paper Week #8 15%
4 Field trip report Week #16 15%
5 Written exam during the final week Week #16 30%

6 General Policies

1. Classroom participation. Participation in scheduled classroom discussion sessions is an important part of

the learning experience. If you know in advance you will have to miss a class for a legitimate reason
(illness, IT Del delegation team participation, etc.), please contact the teaching assistant or me as soon as
possible (or promptly after the fact if an absence is unanticipated). In all cases, however, excused absences
will require appropriate written documentation to be provided. Failure to speak up and participate routinely
in classroom sessions may result in a lower grade.
2. Readings. Students are expected to have read all assigned reading materials before the class on which they
are due. Students are responsible for preparing the content of all readings (textbook and otherwise), as a
basis for classroom discussions, quizzes, tests, and exams.
3. Assignment due dates, late work, and incompletes. All assignments are due by the day and hour
indicated by the instructor (usually on the day when the assignment was given), and it is the student’s
responsibility to keep track of their assignments. Late or incomplete work will result in a lower grade.
4. Classroom conduct. As a courtesy to your classmates and instructor, all cellphones, smartphones, or
similar devices must be turned off or placed on silent during class time. Personal laptop or tablet computers,
and e-readers, are permitted in class only if placed on silent mode, and only for purposes of note-taking or
consulting readings during class sessions. If observed, inappropriate computer or other mobile device use
during class (gaming, texting, unrelated internet surfing) will result in an unexcused absence for that day.

7 Reference and Text Book

2. Vaclav Smil, Energy in Nature and Society: General Energetics of Complex Systems, The MIT Press:
Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2008

8 Course Delivery Schedule

The course will be presented as a series of topics, the sequencing of which is given in the SAP (Satuan Acara
Perkuliahan)/ Lesson Plan form.
