Week 9 - Geometry

Part 1 –
The main ideas that have come from week 9 lecture/tutorials and readings is talking about
what geometry is, the five basic geometry skills, how children learn geometry, 3D and 2D
shapes. Geometry was one of my favourite parts of maths as it speaks about shapes. Shapes
are fun and inviting. Shapes are apart of every day life and are everywhere we look, which
can always be a chance to learn everywhere.

Part 2 –
Geometry is a skill that looks at different types of shapes as well as 2D and 3D shapes.
Geometry is describing sorting and classifying of 3 dimensional shapes and how two or more
objects can be the same as well as different. The language used within geometry is children’s
language- tall, short, round, faces, points, same.
Mathematical language - Faces, vertices, edges, corners, 3 dimensional, 2- dimensional,
length, congruent.

Part 3 –
A common misconception that I have always seen when it comes to children and shapes is
not knowing the uncommon types of shapes. A 2D shape of a triangle changed into a 3D
shape can be a triangular based pyramid or a square based pyramid, the 3D shapes can
confuse the children and confusion is what makes them not interested in mathematics. This
may occur as there are many different shapes, many different names and many different faces
that can confuse them.

Part 4 –
Year 2 - Measurement and Geometry - Shape

Describe and draw two-dimensional shapes, with and without digital technologies (ACMMG042
- Scootle )

Describe the features of three-dimensional objects(ACMMG043 - Scootle )

http://education.abc.net.au/home#!/media/1225670/ This URL is a scootle application that

shows a 5 minute video of a person talking about how many corners, faces and edges. This
can help the students with identifying the differences between 2D and 3D shapes.

Part 5 -
A teaching resource that can be used is a geo-board and rubber bands. As a whole class
explaining the activity of them working as a pair or a small group to read out a shape and
having to create it by using the rubber bands and the geo-boards. Starting out simple and
finishing off with the uncommon shapes. This can help the children with their understanding
of the geometry concept.

Part 6 -
1. The concept that is being described is geometry, this is the properties and
relationships between a line, corner and face of a shape.
Week 9 - Geometry

2. - Describe and draw two-dimensional shapes, with and without digital

technologies (ACMMG042 - Scootle )

- Describe the features of three-dimensional objects(ACMMG043 - Scootle )

3. The teaching strategy that is involved with the teaching resource is giving the
students a piece of paper with different types of shapes on them, from here the
students are to write down the name of the same and re create it on the geo board
with rubber bands.
