Comments Report

4. Comments:

4.1)
Please identify what you perceive to be the real strengths and weaknesses of this instructor and
course.

Extremely helpful, available outside of class. I thought Spanish 3 was much harder than other Spanish
classes at UCLA and Professor Smith was incredibly helpful. Great at explaining difficult concepts and
focusing on the things that our class was having trouble with. Very accepting and made a safe class
environment. Thanks for a great quarter!
I would like to start by saying that Professor Smith was an excellent Spanish teacher, one of the most
attentive and organized teachers I have had at UCLA.

I do have a big problem, however, with the software that is used in the "inverted classroom" format of
Spanish classes at UCLA. This software is, in a word, terrible. It has a user experience similar to what
one would experience on a computer program designed in 1995. Not only is the program incredibly
slow, it constantly crashes and deletes progress. On top of that, the actual activities we are required to
do are banal and, quite frankly, a waste of time for anyone looking to actually learn Spanish. If it wasn't
for the ability of my professor, I do not think I would have learned anything at all in this course. The fact
that we are required to pay hundreds of dollars to use this software reflects quite badly on however
made the decision to use the software.
Instructor truly focused on and valued student learning! Because of that, it turned a class in which I had
low interest into a class that I enjoyed attending.
Profe Chelsey Smith is a great instructor! She really tries to make sure everyone understands the
material in class. She's approachable and it always feels like you can ask her any questions. Her
powerpoints are well thought out and the in-class activities we do are always helpful and interactive,
which makes the learning way more fun! You can tell that she puts a lot of thought into how to help us
succeed in Spanish. The homework she assigned like the cartas also felt really helpful for the exams. I
would highly recommend anyone take Spanish with Profe Smith.
Profe Smith is very personable and a wonderful Spanish instructor. She included engaging activities
during class meetings, and made Spanish really fun to learn. The only drawback was that she graded
participation grades pretty harshly, and it was almost impossible to receive a full grade in participation
without speaking for every activity.
Profe Smith was amazing for Spanish 3. I so appreciated how she focused on us getting our point
across and actually communicating with one another rather than drilling us on grammar and vocabulary
all the time. I feel like I gained a much better understanding of the language than I ever had when I took
language courses in high school. She fostered a very positive class environment and encouraged us to
do out best to communicate with one another consistently during class meetings. If I could make one
recommendation, it would be to do more "review" type games (like when we played Kahoot a few times)
because it gave us a clear benchmark of where we were in terms of our understanding. I was so
worried about this course coming into it having not taken Spanish since high school, but Profe Smith
really made me feel like I was capable and went out of her way to help us master the course material. I
would recommend her to anyone taking a language who wants to actually gain a better understanding
of the language!
Profe Smith was very interactive and a great lecturer. She was very good at communicating with
students and was very helpful in class.
Professor Smith had great clarity and presentation skills - the course had a good pace and was not too
easy or too difficult. Some of the MyLab assignments were tedious, but other than that no complaints!

C. SMITH, 18W: SPAN 3 LEC 5: ELEMENTARY SPANISH

Professor Smith makes sure that the students feel comfortable asking whatever questions they may
have; she is approachable and willing to offer help. Because a majority of the course work is paired
work, it is easy to get by without really learning the material.
Smith encouraged students to participate by creating a safe environment. She was very interactive,
incorporating activities into class to engage students. Definitely will recommend this course
The lectures are informative and the online coursework was extremely helpful in learning and studying
exam material
The strengths of this instructor are that she makes a true effort to help students and answer any
questions they have about the material because she really cares about student learning and is
passionate about the subject. She also tried to get the students to interact in the class as much as
possible. A weakness of this instructor is that she would run through some material pretty quickly and it
was a little hard to keep up at some points.
