This term project requires you to critically examine and gather insights about some of the things
you have learnt about Uni-directional continuous fiber composites.

Essential tasks to be done:

1. Plot the dependence of equivalent properties (E1, E2 and G12) on fiber volume fraction
using the rule of mixtures, modified rule of mixtures and Chamis’ rule.
2. Create basic models using any finite element software and critically examine the iso-
stress (both if fibers are arranged orderly and randomly) and iso-strain assumptions
3. Examine transverse isotropy. In class we discussed that if the fiber is randomly placed,
the material displays same behavior in two axis (transverse isotropy). Build FE models
with random fiber placement and load in two directions and verify if response is the
same. Does your model show transverse isotropy irrespective of number of fibers?

For the three tasks, use three fiber volume fractions: 0.20, 0.25 and 0.3

This is an open ended project; students are encouraged to do analysis over and above the
suggestions above. Some suggestions can be:

1. Derive the stiffness of the composite by individually applying 6 boundary conditions and
analyzing.
2. Instead of isotropic fiber, will any one of the above conclusions change if fiber is
Carbon?
3. Derive the stress concentration factor and compare with Skudra’s chart.

You have freedom to use any Finite element software of your choice. The above link works only
for ABAQUS though. Also, since the link is underdevelopment, there may be few bugs.

A report with the above calculations must be submitted by 1st of April 2018. Save all your OBD
files for inspection. Results without the output files will be viewed with suspicion.
