1 Whereas, In February of ½, the University of Arkansas Fayetteville (UAF)
11 signed the American Colleges and Universities Presidents¶ Climate
1 Commitment Plan. As part of this plan, the University Sustainability
13 Council has actively searched for ways in which to reduce the Carbon
14 footprint of the campus. Many efforts have been made in pursuing this
15 goal, and targeting food waste has been one suggested area of
16 improvement; and

18 Whereas, Currently, all food waste generated by the UAF dining facilities is sent
19 to landfills. This contributes to two types of negative environmental
impacts. First, the transportation of wastes to a landfill creates carbon
1 dioxide emissions. Secondly, methane is generated when the food
decomposes in the landfill. One way to reduce the occurrence of these
3 externalities is to implement an onsite-composting program for dining
4 facilities¶ food waste; and
5
6 Whereas, A Fall 8 feasibility study concluded that the Earth Tubs provide one
½ low cost means to convert food waste to compost. Earth Tubs are large
8 self-contained, electrically powered composting tools. Each Earth tub
9 has the potential of diverting 15 pounds of organic material daily with
3 minimal odor; and
31
3 Whereas, Two Earth Tubs have been purchased for $5 each via Boston
33 Mountain Solid Waste by Facilities Management; and
34
35 Whereas, Facilities Management agreed to maintain the tubs, cover the cost of
36 utilities, and transport food waste from campus to the UA Farm if the
3½ students contributed to a significant portion of the installation costs;
38 and
39
4 Whereas, Student Affairs has allocated two thousand one hundred dollars
41 ($1 ); ASG Executive Fund has allocated one thousand five hundred
4 dollars ($1,5 ); the Applied Sustainability Center has allocated two
43 thousand dollars ($, ); Zoe Teague¶s SURF Grant has allocated one
44 thousand dollars ($1 ); RIC has committed two thousand five
45 hundred dollars ($,5 ); and
46
4½ Whereas, This contribution to increasing the sustainability of our campus is the
48 responsibility of all students; and
49
5
51
5
53 Be it therefore resolved that: That the amount of one thousand dollars ($1, ) be
54 appropriated from the allocations budget; and
55
56 Be it further resolved that: That any remaining balance from the appropriated
5½ funds be returned in full and divided proportionally
58 between the organizations involved in funding this
59 program.
