Preliminary Recommendation for

Neighborhood Selection

In May 2008 the Building Vibrant Neighborhoods Impact Council unanimously

approved a staff recommendation to focus the strategies supporting both its
community results on a select number of targeted neighborhoods. Both Results
Committees have supported this decision.

Research & Timeline for Selection

Also in May 2008 the Impact Council and Results Committees prioritized selection
criteria for neighborhoods. The selection process must be complete by
September, 2008 in order to begin the UWCO funding process in October, 2008.
If neighborhoods are not selected by the September deadline it will prevent
UWCO from focusing on target neighborhoods until the next cycle of investments
in 2012.

In order to select the most appropriate neighborhoods on which to focus,

volunteers requested information on a small number of neighborhoods to
consider. Information currently available includes a Kirwin Institute
comprehensive study of neighborhood revitalization efforts, additional information
compiled by Community Research Partners, and input from experts. The criteria
for neighborhood selection have been applied to the information currently
available.

Focusing Investments

UWCO’s available resources to support the community results in BVN will not be
known until December, two months following the beginning of the UWCO
investment process. At this time volunteers do not anticipate that there will be
adequate resources to fully implement all 8 strategies in four neighborhoods and
achieve the results in all of those neighborhoods volunteers and donors expect.
Therefore, further discussion needs to occur with regard to potentially prioritizing
strategies (full implementation v partial implementation) within the following
targeted neighborhoods.
