Daily Journal

Time: 8:00-10:25
February 6th (first day):
- Today I got to my class and I met my new teacher. She is super nice and I
really like her.
- I talked to her before the morning announcements and I also got to talk to
the other teachers in the hallway. There was one other new teacher that I
didn’t know, and the rest of them in the 5th grade hallway were teachers
that I had back when I went to Twin Hickory.
- Then, the morning announcements came on and after that the kids had
their morning meeting. They all sat around in a big circle at the front of the
room and said good morning to the people on either side of them and went
all the way around the circle. Ms. Culver also introduced me to the class.
- After that, it was time for the kids to start their benchmark testing. They
had to finish the second half of their reading benchmark.
- During the testing, Ms. Culver had to take one of the new students aside so
she had me help the kids go through the process of submitting when they
were all finished.
- One girl during the test had an internet connection problem so we had to
call down Mrs. Davis to help her get that problem fixed.
- After that, Ms. Culver went on to teach the kids math. She talked about
input and output and they went through a couple of example problems
together. I walked around and helped the kids if they didn’t get the right
answers for what the rules of the problem were.
- Then, my teacher called together the math 5-6 students up to the front to
explain what they were going to do during their math time, while the math
5 kids worked on this project on open sentences and word problems.
- During this time, I walked around and helped the kids with anything that
they needed help with and I helped my teacher as well if she wanted me to
do anything.
- After that, Mrs. Davis came into the room and talked to Ms. Culver about
the girl who had the problems with the benchmark test. She then realized
that I was there and had a long talk with me about what my teacher at the
high school had talked to her about. My teacher at the high school didn’t
let her know that I was going to be there because I am a second year
teacher for tomorrow student so there was miscommunication. Apparently
I was not supposed to be there during benchmark testing, but my teacher
after she left reassured me that it was fine that I was there.
- After that, they did some more math work and at that point, it was time for
me to go back to the high school.

Time: 8:00-10:25
February 8th:
- Today I got to my internship and I talked to my teacher and did anything
that she wanted me to.
- Then the morning announcements came on, and after they were finished
with that, Ms. Culver had me walk a student down to Mrs. Wells’ room so
that they could start their benchmark testing. The kid was new to the
school, so he didn’t start the benchmark when the other kids in his class
did.
- Once I came back from that, Ms. Culver had started going over how they
were going to do a jeopardy board math game as a class.
- While the class was doing that, she had me take this kid, who had just
recently moved here from another county, out into the hallway to work on
his math quiz.
- The kid had finished his math quiz, but was going back through over all of
his answers to check them. Since he doesn’t speak English really well, Ms.
Culver had me read all of the questions and answer choices aloud to him so
that he would hopefully be able to understand it better.
- After I was finished with helping him out, we went back into the classroom
and I watched the kids go through the rest of their jeopardy board.
- Once they were finished with that, my teacher had me go down to the
copying machine to make 25 copies of a worksheet that they were going to
do later on in the day.
- Then it was time for them to go to the library. The kids all had to go down
to the fourth grade classes to go borrow some laptops, and then they went
over to the library.
- When we got to the library, Ms. Culver introduced me to the librarian who I
was going to be helping out during that time.
- The librarian asked me to just go around and make sure that the kids were
working on their essays for their research project. While doing that, I also
answered any questions that the kids needed answered.
- Once library was over, we all headed back to the fourth grade classrooms
to give back the computers and then went back to Ms. Culver’s room.
- Ms. Culver asked me if I could put together a little presentation about
myself for the kids to know a little more for next Tuesday. After that it was
time for me to go back to the high school to go to the rest of my classes for
the day.

Time: 8:00-10:25
February 13th:
- When I first got to the classroom, I talked to my teacher about my little
mini lesson that I was going to do today.
- After the morning announcements came on, the kids sat up at the front of
the classroom and I presented my little lesson that was all about me. I
went through a couple of slides on a PowerPoint I had created and just
talked a little about me so that the kids could get to know me better.
- After I was finished with that, the kids moved on to play a math bingo
game.
- During this time, Ms. Culver had me help this new kid to the class get his
math journal all set up.
- I took Ms. Culver’s math notebook and copied the pages so that I could cut
out and paste some of the worksheets into the new kid’s notebook.
- After I had copied the worksheets, I went back to the classroom and copied
what Ms. Culver had in her math book exactly into the other kid’s
notebook.
- While I was working on this, Ms. Culver also had me go make other copies
for her and another teacher.
- She also had me go down to a fourth grade classroom to get some books
from a teacher that she needed to teach some of her 5th graders.
- After completing all of that, it was time for me to go back over to the high
school so that I could go to the rest of my classes.

Time: 8:00-10:25
February 20th:
- When I first got to the classroom I talked to Ms. Culver about how I am not
going to be there on Thursday. I am going out of town for my brother’s
volleyball tournament in Pennsylvania.
- Then the morning announcements came on, and after that Ms. Culver had
the kids do their morning greeting.
- To get started with the day, Ms. Culver had the kids take out expo markers
and had them draw some examples of lines, rays, and segments on their
tables.
- After that, it was time for all of the school to go down to the gym for the
third grade performance.
- We all went into the gym and watched the third graders perform by singing
multiple different songs. Mr. Adair, one of my teachers I used to have
when I went to Twin Hickory, came over and sat next to me during the
performance.
- After the performance was over with, we all went back to Ms. Culver’s
classroom.
- When we went back, Ms. Culver went over what the kids were going to do
for math for the day. She was explaining to them how they were to do
some activities online for the whole week.
- While doing that, she had me help out this girl finish her homework from
the other day. I sat down with her and helped her through it. It was on
lines, rays, and line segments.
- After that, the kids all transitioned to reading and writing. During this time,
I helped out this one kid with a vocab worksheet.
- He had to fill out the definitions of the words, write synonyms for them,
draw a picture, and create a sentence for each. Ms. Culver had me practice
this with him because he is from another country and doesn’t know English
too well.
- After that, it was time for me to go back over to Deep Run to go to school
for the rest of the day.

Time: 8:00-10:25
February 27th:
- When I first got to the classroom, I talked to my teacher and figured out
what I was going to be doing for today.
- After that, the morning announcements came on and then the class did
their morning greeting.
- To start off the day they went over the different types of triangles. On the
board, Ms. Culver went over what an equilateral triangle, an isosceles
triangle and a scalene triangle all are.
- Then, she had them watch a brain pop on it. After that she had them work
on a worksheet that had to do with measuring the length of each side of
the triangles to determine what type of triangle they all were.
- Ms. Culver had me go over and help one of her students with that activity,
and then after that she had me help out with another student who was
struggling as well.
- Once I had finished helping with those students, I walked around and made
sure that everyone was working on what they were supposed to be doing.
If they also had any questions, then I would help them.
- After that, it was time for all of them to transition to doing some reading
time.
- At this time, Ms. Culver went over tone vs mood. She had them watch a
brain pop video and write down a definition for both.
- After that, Ms. Culver had me grade some papers while she had the kids
work on another assignment having to do with tone and mood.
- Then it was time for me to go back to Deep Run to finish the rest of my day.
Time: 8:00-9:55
March 1st:
- When I first got to the elementary school, I talked to Ms. Culver and she
told me what I was going to be helping her out with for today.
- Since it was a half day they didn’t do any math. Instead some of the kids
had to present their biography projects. This was the same project that I
had done when I was in fifth grade at Twin Hickory so it was pretty cool
being able to grade it now.
- Each of the kids got up and put on their poster while giving their
presentations, and Ms. Culver and I both graded the papers. This took up
the majority of the time that I was there helping her out for the day.
- After that, it was time for the kids to go to library. During that time, I
helped Ms. Culver out with some papers that she had to make copies of.
- I went to copy the pages and make copies for another class as well, but
then in the middle of doing that the printer froze and wouldn’t copy
anymore. At that time, I went back to Ms. Culver and explained everything
to her.
- It was then time for me to go back to Deep Run so I explained what I had
left to copy to my teacher so that she would be able to finish it on another
printer in the school.

Time: 8:00-10:25
March 6th:
- When I first got to the classroom, Ms. Culver explained to me how there
was another assembly in the gym today.
- After that, the morning announcements came on for everyone to listen to,
and then the class had their morning meeting.
- Then it was time for all of the school to head down to the gym to watch the
performance. There were two guys who had different instruments who put
on a presentation and they also played music too.
- After the presentation, Ms. Culver led her class back to her room, and they
got started on English activities.
- Ms. Culver explained what she wanted all of the kids to be doing, and then
she had me help out with one of the kids who had moved here this year
from another country.
- I helped him with a vocab worksheet that had geometry terms on it. He
had to fill out the definition of the words, draw a picture of the shape, and
write a sentence using the specified word in it too.
- We both worked through it together, while I guided him on what to do, and
he ended up finishing all of it.
- By that time, it was time for me to go back over to the high school to go to
my own classes.

Time: 8:00-10:25
March 8th:
- When I first got to the school, I went over what I was planning on doing for
my lesson plan for next Tuesday. She said that everything was great, and I
had her read through the rubric too so she would know all of the
requirements.
- After that, the morning announcements came on and the class also had
their morning meeting.
- Once their morning meeting was over with, Ms. Culver had all of the kids
write and draw out their geome-tree to help them study for their quiz the
next day.
- After that, she had the kids all work through different activities while she
met with her math groups to go over quadrilateral shapes.
- During that time, she had me grade these papers that the kids had all done
so that way she could see how much they really understood quadrilaterals
and what shapes are classified as.
- Once I was finished grading, I walked around and made sure that all of the
kids were on task and working on their math assignments. If they had any
questions I helped them out.
- Then it was time for them to go to library. They all stopped by other classes
and got computers and then headed down to the library.
- When we got there, I stayed and helped out one of the librarians with
taking due date cards out of all of the books in the huge stack she had.
- After I was done with that, I helped out with making sure the kids were
working on their essays and helped with any computer problems they had.
- Once they were done with library, they headed back to their class and then
I had to leave to go back over to the high school.

Time: 9:50-11:50
March 13th:
- When I first got to the classroom, I talked to my teacher about setting up
my lesson plan that I was supposed to present that day.
- She had me set up everything while the morning announcements went on.
- After the class had their morning meeting, Ms. Culver had me go present
my lesson.
- I started off with presenting my flipchart on circles. During it, I had the kids
answer lots of questions and I also had them come up and demonstrate
where parts of the circle were.
- Once I was done with that part of my presentation, I had them all watch a
Bain pop that was on circles.
- After the video was over with, I explained to the kids what they were going
to do for an activity.
- I had them take paper plates and label the different parts of the circle on it,
while also decorating it however they would like it. I also had them
complete a worksheet that I made that tested their knowledge on the
definitions of words, labeling the parts of the circle, and how to solve math
equations for circles.
- Once I had explained that, I walked around and helped out the kids with
whatever they needed help with.
- Then they all turned in their work and Ms. Culver had me grade them.
- She then put in the grades and gave me the evaluation sheet that she had
to fill out for my lesson plan.
- At that time, it was time for me to go back to the high school so I could
finish up the rest of my day.
Time: 8:00-10:25
March 20th:
- When I first got to my internship, I went over and talked to Ms. Culver until
the morning announcements came on.
- After that, the kids had their morning meeting, and Ms. Culver did some
housekeeping things such as getting their payments for picture day that
was today.
- Then, she had them go back to their seats so that they could go over the
customary system for math.
- She had them first start by working in their notebooks so that they could all
learn them together. Some of the kids in her class are from out of the area
or from other countries so she had to review to make sure everyone could
learn it.
- By the end of that, Ms. Culver had me pass out these worksheets for the
kids to complete during their independent math time.
- She then took all of the new kids to the area and worked with them at her
table while I walked around the room helping the kids with whatever they
needed help with.
- After that, Ms. Culver had them all transition to reading time. During this
time, she had me go down to make copies for her class and Ms. Staib’s
class.
- Once I had finished making the copies, I came back and she had me help
organize part of her room.
- I got half way done cleaning and organizing, and then it was time for me to
head back to Deep Run.

Time: 9:50-11:50
March 22nd:
- When I first got to the classroom this morning, I talked to Ms. Culver and
told her what time I had to be back at Deep Run since it was a half day
today.
- Then, I continued to work on organizing part of her classroom until the
morning announcements came on.
- After the morning announcements was over with, the kids had to go get
computers from other 5th grade classrooms so that they could do their
library lesson.
- Mrs. B came into Ms. Culver’s class this time to help them work on their
essays, and during that time I helped out Ms. Culver.
- She had me go outside to the bulletin board that was next to her
classroom, and had me take out the staples of all of the projects.
- After I had finished taking down all of the kids projects I returned them to
the students and, she had me put up two signs on her board outside of her
class.
- Then Ms. Culver started a lesson on the metric system vs the customary
system.
- They watched two brain pops and took notes, and then I helped pass out a
worksheet that she was going to have them complete.
- She had pulled aside two students to work with them, and the rest of the
time I walked around helping the students if they had any questions on
how to solve the math problems.
- After that, they started to transition to reading/writing time, but that was
when I had to go back over to the high school so I wouldn’t be late getting
to my class.

Time: 8:00-12:00
March 27th:
- When I first got to class I explained to my teacher how I could be there for
three hours today if she wanted me to.
- I then made sure the kids were doing their morning work, and I helped out
Mrs. Linham with watching her class while she was gone doing something.
- Then the morning announcements came on and Ms. Culver’s class had their
morning meeting.
- After their meeting, Ms. Culver went over capacity for math notes. She
explained the different types of brain dumps and then had them do some
practice in their notebooks too.
- While she went over the notes, I had to go make copies for her for two
worksheets that the kids were going to do when I got back to the class.
- Then, I walked around and helped out the kids with whatever they needed
help with during math time.
- At one point during math, Ms. Culver had me help this one student out to
make sure that she was on track since she had missed school the other day.
- After that, Ms. Culver then had the kids transition to English. They went
over cause and effect, and then she had them do some worksheets.
- While they started to do those worksheets, I walked around and helped out
some.
- I also went to the teachers’ lounge to go get Ms. Culver her popcorn for
snack time.
- During that time, Ms. Culver also had me start to help her with SOL review.
She asked me to come up with different review games, and I made a
science SOL jeopardy game as well during the time I was there.
- Once I had finished making the jeopardy game, I helped her pass back some
papers to the kids.
- After passing back the papers, it was time for me to go back over to the
high school.

Time: 8:00-10:25
March 29th:
- When I first got to the classroom Ms. Culver had me help her make sure the
kids were on task and doing their morning work.
- After that the morning announcements came on and class also had their
morning meeting.
- Then it was time for them to move into math time. Today they were
making a practice test for someone else to complete in the class
- For the practice test they had to do questions including both metric and
customary conversions for different measurements
- Ms. Culver had me start out by walking around making sure they were all
doing okay with making their practice tests and then she had me help her
with something else.
- She had me take their history textbook and create an answer key to this
worksheet the kids completed.
- After I was all finished with making the answer key I had to grade all of their
paper.
- Once I was finished with that all of the kids were at the library so Ms. Culver
had me help her with making copies.
- I made 125 copies of papers for both her class and Ms. Staibs class.
- After I was finished making the copies it was time for me to go back to the
high school. I said bye to all of the kids and Ms. Culver and told them that I
hope they have a great spring break.

Time: 8:00-10:25
April 12th:
- When I first got to the class today Ms. Culver explained to me what they
were going to be doing today.
- After that, the morning announcements came on and the class had their
morning meeting.
- Then Ms. Culver explained how they were going to do the metric Olympics
today. There were 5 events: paper plate discus, paper straw javelin, cotton
ball shotput, right handed marble grab, and big foot measurement.
- At each station, the kids were to complete the activity. First they would
estimate, then do the activity, and then subtract to get the difference
between their prediction and their actual number they got. The group with
the lowest number wins, and they each get medals.
- My job during this was to watch the paper plate discus group. They had to
go out into the hallway to throw the paper plate and measure how far it
went. I had to make sure that they were staying on task and to help them if
they needed any help with it.
- During this time, Ms. Culver also asked me to go get some worksheets from
Ms. Staib and I had to make copies for Ms. Culvers class as well for the
metric Olympics.
- After they were all done with that, Ms. Culver asked for everyone to turn in
their IR project for their poetry slam assignment.
- Three of the kids did not complete them so they were not able to present
while the other kids did.
- They all went to the library where they had tables set up so that they could
watch their classmates present their poems. Each person was to read their
poem and to present it in an enthusiastic and dramatic way.
- Ms. Staib’s class came into the library to watch Ms. Culvers class present
their poems. After they got through all of Ms. Culvers class, the other class
left and the kids who had all presented were to go pick out a new book in
the library for their next IR project.
- By that time, it was time for me to go back to the high school, so I left the
library to go get my stuff in Ms. Culver’s classroom, locked the door, and
then headed over to the other school to continue the rest of my day.

Time: 8:00-10:25
April 17th:
- When I first got to the classroom, Ms. Culver had me go make lots of copies
for her. I had to make lots of copies of three different review packets so it
took a while for them to be finished.
- After that, I went back to her classroom and had to take out the staples out
of one of the packets because they were all stapled wrong when copying
them.
- Then once I had removed all of the staples, I had to stable them a different
way so that way the kids would be able to make them into a booklet. While
I was doing this the whole school was in the gym for a first grade concert
performance.
- After I had finished all of the stapling, I went down to the gym to meet up
with Ms. Culver. Like two minutes after I had gotten there, the first graders
finished up their last song and it was time for all of the classes to go back to
their classrooms.
- When Ms. Culver’s class got back to their room, she had them take out
their math ISN notebooks, their snack, and then head to the front of the
room for their morning greeting.
- Then once they were finished with that, they watched three brainpop
videos (one on the commutative property, then the associative property,
and the distributive property)
- Today their main focus was on the distributive property so after watching
the brainpop video they took some notes on how to do it.
- Then, Ms. Culver pulled up some SOL practice questions on the distributive
property for the kids to figure out. When they had gotten their answer
they were to stand in the designated corner of the room for where their
answer choice was.
- She would go through each problem, having the kids defend their answers,
and then would go over what is the correct answer and why.
- For the last problem, she had all of the kids write their answers on a
notecard and then turn it in to me.
- Once I had all of the notecards, I went up to the board and described what
the correct answer was, why, and what some tips/shortcuts were to be able
to understand and find the correct answer.
- By that time, it was time for me to go back over to the high school.

Time: 8:00-10:25
April 19th:
- When I first got to the classroom Ms. Culver explained to me what she was
going to have me do today.
- Next Monday the whole 5th grade is starting their “Are you smarter than a
5th grader” SOL review. She was going to have me go make lots of copies
for that.
- I got down to copy everything and had to copy 20 packets with 150 copies
of each since it was for the whole grade. It took me the whole time that I
was there to make all of those copies.
- When I got back to Ms. Culver’s room, I put each packet in manila folders
and then it was time for me to go back over to the high school.

Time: 8:00-10:25
April 24th:
- When I first got to the classroom I was talking to Ms. Culver and she
explained what the class was going to be doing today.
- After that, the morning announcements came on and the class did their
morning meeting.
- Ms. Culver explained how they were going to be doing 5 question math
review warm ups every morning to get prepared for the SOL’s and that they
would also count toward the are you smarter than a 5th grader game.
- Ms. Staib then came into the classroom and had me help copy some more
review papers for the whole 5th grade.
- I had to go copy 6 packets with 120 copies of them for each. I went to the
first printer and was able to get through the first packet, and then it said
that the toner needed to be replaced, which was not in the room.
- I then went to the second copy room to go make the rest of my copies, but
when I got to that one there was a problem with the printer asking to put
more paper in the tray, when I already had done that. Since that one
wasn’t working, I went to the last copy machine that was in the library.
- When I got there I started to make the rest of all of the copies I had to do,
but there were lots of other teachers that had to make copies there as well
since the rest of the printers in the school weren’t working.
- One of my teachers from when I was at Twin Hickory, Mrs. Baker, came in
with some of the other kindergarten teachers, so I talked to them for a little
while as they made their copies. Ms. Baker asked me to also make some
copies for her since her team had to have a meeting before all of the kids
were done with their resource they were at.
- After I was finished making the copies for Ms. Baker, I then finished up the
last of the copies that I had to make for the 5th grade teachers.
- I then went back to Ms. Culver’s classroom and put the packets in manila
folders so they could be used later on.
- The last thing I did was grade some math papers for my teacher. Once I
was finished with that, she was going through some old papers that Mrs.
Williams had given her to use as example papers for her class that had to
do with writing, and ironically my paper that I had written in 5th grade was
in that stack. Ms. Culver then said she had to go show Mrs. Williams
because it was really funny how my paper from a long time ago was used as
an example for her class when I happened to be there for my internship.
- After all of that, it was time for me to head back over to the high school so I
could finish up the rest of my school day.

Time: 8:00-10:25
April 26th:
- Today I got to the classroom, and I talked to Ms. Culver about when my last
day of my internship will be. I was planning on ending either May 8th or the
15th, but they are doing SOL testing that day, so I have to have my last day
next Thursday.
- After that, the morning announcements came on and the class had their
morning meeting.
- At the end of their meeting, Ms. Culver had me go pick up papers that she
had printed while she talked to the class for a while about their behavior
issues.
- Once that was all over with, she had them finish up their math morning
work if they hadn’t already, and then after everyone was finished they
checked the answers as a class.
- After they were all done checking the warm up, Ms. Culver had me pass out
these slips of paper that the kids were to figure out their scores on for their
practice math SOL they took.
- While they were all doing that, she had me grade some science papers and
had me record what the kids got on their SOL practice sheets as well so
they know how they are doing.
- Then, Ms. Culver had me take the slips of papers from the kids and sort
them into a pile of which kids got a passing score and which ones did not.
- By that time, Ms. B the librarian had come into the classroom and she had
the kids get ready for their presentations.
- They each had written an essay on a topic, and they were to create a mini
presentation to go with it so that they could tell us about what they did
their paper on. Lots of the kids did PowerPoint presentations, and one kid
rapped his information while music was playing in the background.
- After that was all over with, Ms. Culver had me brainstorm ideas for
teacher appreciation week so that she could get new things for her kids and
her classroom.
- Then it was time for me to go back over to the high school so that I could
finish my classes for the day.

Time: 8:00-10:25
May 1st:
- When I first got to my internship I talked to Ms. Culver and she told me
what they were going to be doing today.
- Then the morning announcements came on and the kids had their morning
meeting.
- After that, Ms. Culver went over their math morning work. They went
through their five math problems, and also their science review, and then
headed back to their seats.
- At that point Ms. Culver had them start working on their are you smarter
sheets so that they could complete more of their review for the SOL’s.
- During that time, Ms. Culver had me go make some copies at the printer,
had me grade lots of the worksheets that they had completed, and help out
the kids with whatever they needed help with.
- I also had to go fix an answer key for one of the reviews so I had to go over
to Mrs. Williams’ classroom to be able to go fix it.
- After all of that was over with, it was time for me to go back to the high
school.

Time: 8:00-10:25
May 3rd:
- Today was my last day of my internship in Ms. Culver’s classroom with her
5th graders.
- I got to class and I gave Ms. Culver a little present that I got for her and
thanked her for letting me be in her classroom over the past couple of
months.
- After that, the morning announcements came on and the kids had their
morning meeting. This morning I got to start off the morning meeting.
Once they had finished with that, Ms. Culver went over some important
