INCREASING STUDENT’ SPEAKING SKILL BY AUTODIDACT


LEARNING USING ONLINE APPLICATION AND THE VIDEO OF
LANGUAGE TUTORIAL

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Study

English as an international language plays a big role in communication.


Morever, English is being considered the world most widely studied foreign language
(Jack and Theodore, 2002:9). More than half of the world population uses and
communicates in English. In addition, English has become one of the obligatory
subjects that are taught from junior high school up to university level in Indonesia.

In English, there are four skills that should be mastered. One of the skills is
speaking. Speaking also becomes the main purpose of why the students have to study
English. English encompasses many aspect; pronunciation, grammar, word order,
vocabulary and fluency. All of these have strong connection in each other and mutual
cooperation in producing the best sentence that is expressed through the oral
communication ( madsen, H. Douglas,1983).

One of the aims of most language programs is to develop spoken language skills
and most programs aim to integrate both spoken and written language. Learning a
language means using it in communication in oral or written form, and being able to
express feeling, thoughts, and experiences in various context. According to Lado (1964)
state that know a language is to use it. He further states that students do not know a
sentence until he can speak. Therefore, speaking is important skil that a learner should
acquire in order to produce a good communication.

In this research, the researcher concerned in the method used in increasing


speaking skill by the autodidact learner using online application and the video of
language tutorial. Both of media used in the research are supporting by internet supply.
Hence, there are many of students nowadays use the media to learn English by self-
teaching or autodidact. Here, the researcher want to know and describe about the
method that the autodidact learner use and to know about the obstacles that the student
face when learning English autodidactic using online application and the video of
language tutorial. Based on the explanation above, the researcher hopes that by learning
autodidactic the student will get an easy way to get knowledge especially in increasing
speaking skill without only receive the knowledge of English from teacher at school
but they can increase it by self-teaching using two of media. Therefore, the researcher
is interested in conducting the research entitled “ Increasing Student’ Speaking Skill by
Autodidact Learning using Online Application and the Video of Language Tutorial ( A
Study at Junior High School)”.

B. Research Question.

In this research, the researcher has three questions that would like to be answered,They
are as follow:

1. What kind of methods are implemented in autodidact learning using online


application and the video of language tutorial?
2. How the methods influence in autodidact learning?
3. What kind of obstacles faced in learning English autodidactic?

C. The Aims of Study


The objectives of this research are :
1. To describe the use of methods in autodidact learning using online application and
the video of language tutorial.
2. To describe about the methods that influence autodidact learning.
3. To know about the obstacle in learning English autodidactic.

D. The Significance of Study.

This research is expected to be able to give the information to people which they
are in learning English process. By doing this research, the researcher will give contribute
some benefits for the students, reader, and the researcher in the future, here are the benefits
for each of them:

1. Student
The researcher hopes that student can improve their speaking skill by using the
medias implemented in the research.
2. Reader
Whoever read the research, the researcher hopes this they can take the benefit of
this study, and implement to their life.
3. Future Researcher
Who are interested in doing further research related to this study.
