STANDARD WORKING METHODS

(Gravity pipe outside building.)

1. General
The intent of this document is to provide an outline to the work scope and details of the overall method of works
to be carried out in laying of gravity sewer/waste pipe lines outside the building.

2. Tools & Equipment

Tools and equipment shall be arranged including
 Crow bar
 Hoe
 Rammer
 Hacksaw

3. Material
 uPVC pipe and fittings
 Warning tapes and wood strips to mark and barricade the excavated area.
 Marking tape to indicate the presence of the buried pipe.
 Refill media.(sand or suitable excavated soil)

4. The Sequence of Operation

4.1 Pre installation check
 Shop drawing shall be approved or working instruction shall be given by the client/client representative
before proceeding any installation work in the site.
 Engineer approval for the material to be taken before procure any material. Only approved material used
in installation works.

4.2 Material Handling & storage

 During transportation & unloading, material shall handle with care to avoid any damages.

DOC NO: APS/OPM/8/L/WI/1.1 Originally Issued Date: 01/10/2017 Revised Date: 00/00/0000 Rev: 00
 uPVC pipe shall be stored in level ground with timber support spaced 1.5- 3m apart from each other.
 Pipe fittings shall be stored in boxes in sheltered condition.

4.3 Excavation of trenches & preparation

 Construction area shall be barricaded using warning tapes before commence any site works.
 Mark the locations that need to be excavated as per the approved shop drawings.
 When the sides of the trenches found to be collapse, timber shoring or suitable shoring will be arranged.
 A string shall be connected to two pegs starting and ending above one foot of pipe invert elevations.
 Bed of the trench will be prepared maintaining one foot from string to the bed surface starting to end of
pipe trace removing bedding material or filling bedding material wherever necessary.
 After achieving the pipe gradient along the trench, using the level instrument randomly selected three or
more points will be checked for conformity of the pipe bed slope.
 The bedding shall be leveled and sloped to achieve a required pipe gradient along the pipes, with socket
holes at each joint to perform a proper jointing. The socket holes shall be deep enough to slope the socket
of the pipe bearing any weight. The pipe bedding will be evenly placed along the trench at specified
thicknesses and compacted with a plate compactor or a manual tamper as appropriate. Sand or Granular
shall be placed around pipe after jointing, without mechanical compaction up to the specified height from
the crown of the pipe as per specifications. Manual rolling or ramming could achieve proper surround,
reasonably compacted backfill at this stage.
 Actual pipe invert levels for starting and ending will be found out taking levels from a leveling instrument.
During this period some soil will be removed or filled to achieve the correct starting and ending pipe invert
elevations.

4.4 Laying of pipes & fittings.

 Water shall flush through the pipe to remove dust and other unwanted material before installation.
 Joining method might be bell form type or solvent cement type depend on size of the pipe and the
requirement.
 When bell form type pipe used, ends and sealing rings shall thoroughly clean using clean rag. After
marking the insertion depth of the spigot, rubber ring shall be inserted to the grove of the pipe ensuring
that it is fully seated along the circumference. A thin film of lubricant t shall applied to the rubber ring
and to the chamfer of the spigot of both ends of the jointing pipes. The two pipe lengths shall aligned and
pushed steadily until plain end of the pipe is fully inserted to the bell type end.
 Pipe indication tape shall be installed 300mm above new pipe line.

4.5 Connection to the manholes/Pump pit
 Manholes to be constructed by keeping box outs for pipe laying or in situ construction.
 After placing the manhole at the designated location, final pipe piece shall be installed and shall be
restrained using supports to maintain the pipe invert level.
 When the openings to be filled with concrete, the Inner surface of concrete surface shall be chipped and
clean thoroughly to remove foreign materials. Recommended Sulphur resistant grout shall be applied on
the inner surface of the box outs. Formwork shall be provided to avoid any leakage of concrete and
opening shall provide to pour concrete.

4.6 Backfilling trenches

 Pipe line will be backfilled with approved back fill material except any joints to be inspected for leakage.
First 300 mm of from the pipe crown will be filled by soil or sand free from stones.
 Back filling of joints will be commence after pressure testing of pipe line and approved by the engineer.
 Before back filling laid pipeline shall be checked for its gradient. Pipeline gradient shall be checked
randomly for selected three or more points keeping the level shaft on top of the pipeline and getting
readings from the level instrument and comparing with the calculated levels from pipeline gradient.

7. Quality Control
Quality Control Procedures shall be referred to Quality Control Plan and conducted specifically as;
1) Preliminary
a. Site observations to find the services that will be interfere with actual work.
b. Confirmation and approvals of location to be excavated.
c. Obtain engineer approval for work method & shop drawing.
d. Material approval.
2) Site work
a. Mark the site to be excavated.
b. Proceed the site as per approved method statement & drawings.
c. Use only approved material for the particular work.
d. Pressure testing of new pipeline.
8. Safety Measures to be enforced
1) Particular awareness of safety measures will be taken in sewer pipe line installation works.
