Human Rights from our own history

Introduction.

Luisa Hairabedian Foundation was established in 2005 to pursue the conduct of the Trial for the
Right to the Truth of the Armenian Genocide brought in 2001 by Gregorio and Luisa Hairabedian.
This trial ended in April 2011 after the entry of a final judgment in which it was held that: "the
Republic of Turkey committed the crime of genocide against the Armenian people during the
period of 1915 to 1923."
During these years, the Foundation has been growing up due to the incorporation of volunteers
and professionals of social sciences, and due to the beginning of new projects and activities
supported by the Armenian diaspora, and by different organizations and individuals who made the
Foundation's development possible to date.

Mission.

The Foundation is a Latin American organization of Human Rights which makes use of
experiences involving the Armenian Genocide and the process of Memory, Truth and Justice in
Argentina as basic elements to raise public awareness about serious violations against Human
Rights and the essential role that education plays to prevent further genocides.

The Foundation seeks to achieve a positive social change and to make civil society fairer through
the teaching of history, humanities and social sciences, and international law.

The LHF shares and fosters its actions through alliances with similar organizations running in Latin
America and other places of the world to help in the achievement of related social changes and to
raise awareness through education to encourage dialog between parties and to erase the idea of
"them" against “us" for the purpose of fostering more desirable human relations and a better world.

The Foundation organizes its activities and projects in working teams divided into five programs.

Program of Research and Academic Studies

The raising of knowledge must raise awareness. In this sense, the Program is intended to analyze
historical and current processes about traumatic events in order to create new lines of study.
Research projects as well as seminars and courses in different areas of higher education are
mainly developed together with local and foreign academics.
Through this Program, there was established the Genocide and Human Rights' Documentary
Center, which encompasses historical documents on Armenian Genocide and the Right to the
Truth.

Program of Development and Judicial Strategies.

From 2001 to 2011, this Program has collected and submitted official documents coming from
America, Europe and Asia, and also testimonies provided by Armenian Genocide survivors to
Argentine courts. This work ended with the entry of the judgment in favor of the claimant in April
2011, making Argentina the only country whose three powers of the government recognize the
existence of the Armenian Genocide.
The current objective is to investigate and deal with central themes related to negationism,
processes of amnesty and impunity laws, legal remedies and Right to the Truth, based on
Argentine experience of crimes committed during the last civic-military dictatorship as an example
to bring any future legal action.
