Zwick Servo Valves Functionnal principle
Application
Servo valves are used in closed loop control systems for
highly accurate control of hydraulic energy. An electrical
input signal in the milliwatt range controls multi-kilowatt
hydraulic power.
Materials and component testing places extremely
severe demands on servo valves. Widely differing set
value signals must be followed precisely, at both ex
tremely low and very high test speeds, with short or
long travel. To select the appropriate servo valve, the
size of the single testing actuator (nominal force) and
the required operating point, defined by force, travel
and frequency, are taken into consideration. At Zwick a
suitable computer program is used to determine perfor-
mance data for a specific single testing actuator/servo
valve combination.
Description of operation
The electrical command signal generates a torque in the
torque motor, causing movement of the flapper-nozzle
system. The resulting differential pressure acts on the

front faces of the control piston and displaces it. The
system is in equilibrium when the moment of the return

spring equals that of the torque motor, so that piston
stroke and control signal are proportional to each other.
The 4-way control piston directs the oil flow from the
pressure port to one of the two cylinder chambers, at
the same time the other chamber is connected to the
return line.
